I blame Hollywood for the sorry state of games this generation!
Everything worth saying was said in the article. He obviously has a low opinion on games, so he's judging them, and their effects, on a small sample, and an inaccurate one. Have fun with that.
And I think the problem is, the market is expanding, the number of movies being made is growing. Statistics say there will be more crap, but also more good.
Games cover the same material as movies a lot of the time, and we know they can have the very same messages, whether it be good vs evil, or of an antihero absolving himself by taking out the big bad, or whatever, I can't be bothered listing plots.

Video games as an industry is in much worse shape than gamers think, imo as a 4-hour-a-day (on average) gamer since the early 1980s.

Two statistics for you: 80% of mass-reviewed games (games which have at least 5 reviews on gamerankings.com) feature killing as the primary mode of gameplay (whole genres have this - FPS, RTS, RPGs).

Even games made by amateurs usually with little to no financial incentive or beholden to those interests, on newgrounds.com, have a 50% chance of featuring killing as the primary mode of gameplay.

Let's think outside the box for a moment. Let's say you're a developer who wants to make games. Why with such tremendous frequency do you make games featuring killing?

Why are most games about killing? Because games about doing our laundry and going grocery shopping would be boring. Simple as that.

I could make the same argument about how movies ruined books, but I'd look like a conceited douche who's mad because his movies aren't doing well. If Mr. Thorton had been in actually good movies, or was even a remotely decent actor maybe his argument would hold weight; but he hasn't been, and he's not. I'm pretty sure actors get to read the scripts for movies before they sign up, don't they?

The last movie that catered towards video game players was "Gamer" and it wasn't horrifically terrible, it was just normal terrible. Wasn't the fact that once well written violent movies gave the ability of well written/played violent games to shine? One did exist before the other right?

You know what good movies really catered towards video game players? Street Fighter: The animated movie....and that is all I can think of right now. Resident Evil and Silent Hill don't count, they were more catered towards movie goers (people who didn't know the history of the games) than game players.

First of all, I've been to the movies three times this year (Toy Story, Inception, Scott Pilgrim), and have been blown away all 3 times. Not to mention The Social Network and HP, which is supposed to be good.

Second, he just contradicted himself! He says movies coming out today are crap because they do all these things, then he said how this movie DOESN'T do those things.....and the movie he's talking about is crap!

I agree wit this one, 2010 saw some awesome movies. Both movies that were deep and interesting: Inception, Shutter Island, Toy Story 3, and movies that was all about the fun; Iron Man 2, Kick Ass, Scott Pilgrim.

the 7 current CODs have more consistent quality then the entire movie industry. its not in the innovation with cod, its in the consistency
