That's ridiculous. The decisions in Mass Effect didn't have any effect on Mass effect 2. Mass Effect 3 won't be different, we already know that it dosn't matter what you did with the collector base. We will fight against Cerberus.
I'm sure that the other decisions only matter in some dialogues.

They said that they want to do more with the franchise.

It will probably be something like DA:Os imported saves into DA2. The events happened off to the side so they don't influence you directly, but you can seen the fallout of your choices in the long run.
This is my guess.

There was some discussion previously in this forum concerning the idea of a post ME3 game that we called "Mass Effect: Origins" where you could play as any of the races and (likely) got recruited as a Spectre and sent out to deal with various situations.

If that is the case, then the decisions that the player made in ME3 would be necessary to frame the universe. Who's in charge of what? Which planets got blown up, which ones were saved? Are the Krogan cured or not? Who is currently living on the Quarian homeworld? Stuff like that.

What I've sometimes been thinking is that we don't defeat the reapers at the end of ME3 (This ISN'T a spoiler, just speculation). I mean, the odds are on there side and since multiplayer has an impact on singleplayer, if you defeat the reapers, there would be no reason for the multiplayer story. It could be that the next game is pockets of resistance against the reapers...
Who knows?
Sorry if someone already said this.

I'm really not sure if I would buy another Mass Effect game without Shepard. Mass Effect 1 was the first game I got for my first dedicated console, and I'd say that ME won't be the same without Shepard and some of the cast.
To be honest, I'm operating under the assumption that Shepard isn't going to survive the end of Mass Effect 3, one way or another.

I mean, if you track the story of Mass Effect, what do you have? Initially, the galaxy disbelieves Shepard entirely. Then, when Shepard has some measure of proof, the threat is downplayed and Shepard is sent off on largely meaningless errands... which wind up killing him.

Then, after having returned as a sort of cybernetic Jesus-figure, Shepard is ultimately proven utterly right, presumably at the beginning of Mass Effect 3 when the Reapers show up and start killing everything in sight.

Having Shepard martyr himself (in some fashion) in order to destroy the Reaper threat (in some fashion), seems almost inevitable.

Garrus and Liara spin-off into their own series where they solve crimes on Illium. Garrus plays the role of the by-the-books cop while Liara is the wild card rookie. But look for an old friend (Cmdr. Shepard) to drop by and help them out from time-to-time. It's called Lethal Effect or Mass Weapon. Your save game isn't that important except to determine whether or not the Shepard cameo is MaleShep or FemShep.
How well would that work if Garrus was dead though?

The saves will clearly influence the state of the universe during the upcoming Mass Effect - Futurama crossover. Romance options will include Leela and Amy for ManShep, Fry and Hermes for FemShep, and Zoidberg for everyone.

Sometime after ME3 finishes off, they may or may not release a trailer that shows Shepard emerging from some sort of stasis pod at the behest of EDI to find themselves on a rapidly disintegrating ship. After transferring EDI onto a portable storage device, Shepard uses some heavy weapons to shot his/her way out of the wreck to find what's left of the ship, and finds it drifting towards what may either be a huge spacestation or a super mass relay that will send them off to a distant galaxy.
I see what you did there.

There is soooooo much that could be done with the mass effect universe probably more than any other game universe I can really think of. I would love to see something like the genophage being cured in ME3 and then you play out another krogan rebellion and you get to choose whether you fight for or against the krogan

I hope they make a game I care about. The last couple Bioware titles have been so "meh."

If it involves the ending of ME3, it likely will be Shepard as an instructor or captain training prospective Spectre candidates or possibly as the lead of a deniable asset team by which the character is recruited for.

Seems fairly obvious that they'd be wanting to use your version of Commander Shepard's story as part of the history in the next game. See how your actions changed the universe. Or maybe you play as someone else in the same time as Shepard, and it retells Shepard's story from another perspective.

Yeh, it was a bit lame really, but still, glad someone noticed it...:p

Anyway, seeing that they're asking us to keep a hold of our ME3 saves, I guess that puts any prequel thoughts to rest for now. After all, your actions in ME3 aren't going to have any effect on the outcome of the first contact war, or the discovery of the Prothean ruins. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing that sort of thing covered at some point. Going back to the Halo analogy again, perhaps a sort of Halo: Reach style event before finally heading off into the future.

Sounds fair to me, you don't create a universe this massive just to have a fairly pretty background.

There is be a lot of potential in the Mass Effect universe as there is lot of interesting races with conflicts and struggles. But I do hope they don't to a lazy prequel as many franchises do.

Um, yes they did.

Some of them were small and subtle (Rachni, Condrad, Garrus joining, fists survival, crimelord lady, green asari, noveria undercover officer) true but some are pretty obvious (Council status, humanity rep, Wrex' leadership)

Yes, but the effect on the game can be ignored. I have played Mass Effect 2 several times, with several save games from Mass Effect 1, but I never got the feeling that it is a different story. The effect of those decisions were only a few lines of dialogue.

Is this really news? Bioware has all but confirmed that the story of Mass Effect would continue after ME3, without Shepard? I'm voting for a spin-off where Joker is given robotic legs and becomes the 6 million credit man!
