Violence is one of the reasons I play games. It very cathartic to be able to kill 500 citizens of new york and then throw a destroyed tank at a chopper.

We are talking about real games people! Not casual!
You do know that a lot of the classic games, the ones that got people into gaming, would be considered "casual" games by today's ridiculous standards? And why are "casual" games not "real" games? Because you don't like them?
What classic games :/
I mean casual games like the sims, or almost all the stuff on wii.
I could burn so much...

I agree that games without violence are possible... because they have been done before. but I also agree that violence makes more money :D
Classic games like Super Mario Bros and Tetris. You know, the games the current up and coming game devs grew up playing and that probably got them into gaming.

The games you deride as "casual" are the games that are going to get the next crop of kids into gaming, and bring gaming back as more than the past time of man-boys living in their parents' basements. You don't like the Sims or things on the Wii, well, guess what? They were not designed for you. I know it's hard for the "hardcore" gamers to grok, but...hardcore gamers are not, in fact, the center of the gaming universe, and Nintendo, with the Wii, was not even aiming for the hardcore gamer demographic. Nintendo has said as much themselves: they've said more than once their competition was never Sony or Microsoft, but the indifference of non-gamers. They were shooting for pretty much everyone else--lapsed gamers, people who had never been into gaming, kids gaming for the first time. And they did a very, very good job with their goals. Like it or not, "casual" games are popular, and are how a lot of future gamers are going to be getting their start.

Though I've been repeatedly ninja'd, this is pretty obvious. After all, games without violence is how the industry started in the first place. Tetris, Pong, most sports games even. You hardly go up to your opponent in Virtua Tennis and smack him round the face with your racquet, do you? Games without violence have always had a decent audience. Seems Bioware have been living under a rock for a good few years...

I think games with no violence in them would be fine. I love playing adventure games and while I know some do have mild violence, they seem to have less. I would love to just follow a story, find clues, solve something, interact with characters or, go on a journey.

Actually I feel this falls under the "duh" catagory since there are plenty of non-violent games. Look at the $9.99 casual gamer budget bin some time. Tons of puzzle games and such that don't seem to involve violence in any way, shape, or form. I'd also take a wild guess that most of the "Barbie" titles don't involve battle mechanics.

Now, will men ever really embrace non-violent/action based games? Probably not unless forced, despite all of the attempts to turn us into politically correct metrosexuals. Still there are plenty of girls, young children, and girly-men that doubtlessly play this stuff.

I mean heck, look at "The Sims" one of the best selling games ever, and it doesn't involve violence. Please note that guys who play this one probably keep really tight sequined pants somewhere in their wardrobe so I'm not sure if they count as "men" anymore. >:)

Also arguably racing games don't involve violence, but can be played by men simply because of the massive cars and really sweet crashes and such. :)

Heck, you don't even have to go to the bargain bin. Just google any game sales data for the last 10 years and you'll see plenty of non-violent games in the top ten.

Woah, I really hope this was meant to be sarcastic. If not, you might want to lay off all the "manly talk" because when you lay it on too thick people start to think you are trying to hide something...

...I wasn't aware I was forced to play Harvest Moon. Not that I don't enjoy games like Gears of War and/or Mass Effect, of course, but there's nothing wrong with a game like Harvest Moon either.

Of course there's plenty of games that aren't violent, but the doctors are centering their statements on the fact that these games, by and large, don't hold the same dramatic intensity or gameplay standard to hold the interest of those who generally go for action in their games. That audience is looking for action and a motivation for playing that game. Most conflicts are borne of violence, and hopefully, such a game without violence will achieve the same level of engrossing storytelling as the great games that do have violence.

Doesn't Harvest Moon involve combat mechanics?

I'm pretty sure it forms a pretty big part of Rune Factory at least.

Since when does OBJECTION!!! count as a violent verbality? I mean, as violence. I think that...

Oh, wait, Ace Attorney has violence! In the first game, Maya is shot with a tazer. That's damn violent, if you ask me.
It's a forceful and demanding statement that causes the recipient mental stress.

Ahaha, that's hilarious.
What was she doing at the time? Beating someone with her handbag?

We already have a widely successful series without fighting. Its called Rock Band.
What about the torture scene?

If I recall correctly, it's called "Green Grass and High Tides."

LOL! *snort* Hahahahahahahah!!! Well, I'm not sure I can dispute it, but it is more of a challenge to overcome like Free Bird in Guitar Hero. No pain no gain. ;)

Gee, I wonder if there is some stigma attached to just enjoying a fun game that happens to be non-violent:

Actually, Phoenix was the one to get tazed. But she jumped into the line of fire and got shot herself. Don't worry, she was fine, she just passed out and for the next day, shocked everyone she touched.

I don't remember there being any violence in Maniac Mansion, unless you count draining the pool and letting the house's nuclear reactor explode.
MICROWAVE HAMSTER.
I"m pretending that I've never done that and that I am disgusted at the pure mentioning of doing so. I completely forgot that you could do that, and that if you show it to Weird Ed, he will kill you. Plus, that was only in the first so many Nintendo cartridges, and on all IBM PC versions. So I guess the game was violent.

it was in every cartridge released in the U.S. and removed from the PAL release.
