I actually agree with you up until the very end. I just don't think that her appearance is very relevant. She is still badass, her looks notwithstanding. I don't think altering her face really changes how I personally perceive her character.

Heh, I knew that was going to come back to bite me.
I'll just take up space one last time, to mention that that fierce and intense expression you mention, is actually part of the problem for me. It just doesn't look genuine to me, but "engineered", if you catch my drift: I have seen that exact expression gaze out at me from too many ads, trying to sell all sort of things, to be able to "buy" it. One could say it's the exact same "trained" expression as VanderShep's and that's not untrue, although, to me, his looks a little bit more weary and maybe a little bit more sincere, perhaps simply through that very weariness (...and lack of mascara
).
Each of us will have their own impressions and I will indeed import my own Shepards, from the previous games, regardless of what the marketing figureheads look like.
It's just that it feels like an opportunity to discretely set an ever so small positive precedent, or rather; letting it continue setting itself, squandered, badly.
Hopefully, though, the condensed overall impression people remember from this whole hubbub, if any, will be like your's.
