I can think of a lot of ways to dispose of the ME2 crew (spoilers?):

Miranda goes to live with her sister, Sary Mue.

Thane dies of space AIDS.

Grunt goes to join a tribe of Steve Blums.

Legion takes up a job as an intermediary between geth and organic races.

Mordin dies from being old as fuck.

Jacob blinks out of existence without anybody noticing.

Jack dies/is rendered incapable of combat due to neural degeneration from her biotics.

Samara fulfilled her promise and goes on to do awesome shit throughout the galaxy.

Zaeed is untrustworthy anyway. He either goes off to get vengeance if you paragoned on his sidequest, or he goes off to climb a giant tower and fight Jehovah just because.

Morinth is a fucking psychic serial killer, if you brought her along I hope you didn't expect her to stay loyal.

Kasumi goes off to not fit in with the setting somewhere else. BioWare, if you're reading this: I was very disappointed when I heard that the DLC character wasn't going to be the lesbian option you nixed from the game for some retarded reason. Either change her to be that (and make her interesting), or just don't bother.
Just hope they don't keep the boring characters.

Good, there were too many in ME2. Six wasn't enough though, so a happy medium would be perfect.

Got to say I like this, I'd rather have say 6 potential squadmates with longer, better thought out interactions than the 14 I have in ME2 with the DLC.

Definitely want to keep from ME2: Tali, Jack, Garrus, Mordin.
Definitely bring back in from ME1: Liara, WREX!

If they have 7 or 8 slots they can fill them out with either Legion (if we're going to see the Quarian/Geth storyline brought to a conclusion), Samara (interesting character that needs more depth to her story and personality) or Ashley (sorry Kaiden, for some reason you always end up as fallout on Virmire).

Definitely get rid of: Jacob (a bit useless and apparently has a huge stick up his arse), Miranda (arrogant *****), Thane (interesting, but may be too ill to continue and is a bit too similar to Garrus), Grunt (superseded by bringing Wrex back).

Ofc they could always be really creative and give us an Elcor squadmate with a back-mounted turret or throw in some of the other ME2 NPCs as squadmates.

Then bring Wrex back and sort out the backstory with Aria/Aleena; find out if Matriarch Aethyta is Liara's 'father'; sort out the Quarian/Geth War; see off the Reapers and live happily ever after with . Simples!

sounds good to me
maybe this time around it won't be possible to have everyone who can be on your at the same time, so that while there may be 10 potential companions you may only have 6 on the normandy during one playthrough (because you have to send people to die after every big story mission)

so what i'm seeing here is players don't want to have such a big team in ME3, but no one wants to give up there Favorite characters aswell.

then i'm hoping that we can pick our team this time! that way the team stays small. and we get our favorite characters. also this will make people want to re-play over and over with deferent teams. lets see if bioware can live up to reputation

Casey's announcement certainly adresses one of my major issues with ME2. Hopefully, the drop in squad mate numbers will result in "deeper" relationships and not just fewer, but still swallow acquaintances. The article states the interaction will be "deeper", but it seems like an awfully easy place to cut some cornes if either budget or time becomes an issue...

Or if you talk to Jack, most of the time you'll end up with her telling you to fuck off every time.
If she's less annoying than in ME3 then I'll be happy. Punk rock... not so much. More like Emo.

This is actually come of the better news I've heard coming out of BioWare in a while.

I always preferred the smaller squad of ME1 because it really felt like they would realistically be the sort of tight knit team who treated each other as family, whereas ME2 felt like what it was, a group of specialists recruited for a mission who by the end at the very least trusted each other.

I suppose the difference is how I imagined the whole team would act together. I could totally see all of the ME 1 team taking a bullet for each other by the end, whereas there would still (I think) have been tensions among the ME2 crew. I just don't think Jacob would ever be comfortable with Thane, or anyone with Zaeed. Even the layout of the two games, ME1 having almost all of the squad in the same room vs ME2 having everyone in their own separate room, emphasises how this is an assembled, not a group of friends who've fallen together through chance. Almost like the Star Wars or Firefly approach versus the Stargate or Star Trek approach. Assembled vs fell in together.

Of course, I tend to get deeply into the roleplay of it. So my biggest hope for ME3 is that it doesn't become a samey cover based third person shooter that just happens to have an overly elaborate conversation option. Because ME2 was already dangerously close to that.

I will be ok with this if they go the Shadow Broker way: let me have some characters available to some missions, even if they are not permanently on my team.

Considering the answers so far and the fact I would rather have Samara, Tali, Legion, Thane and Miranda on my team (I don't care much about the rest), I guess it will be difficult to have a roster that leaves everyone happy.

Not getting the point, are we?
They don't have the time, money, or manpower to make everyone recruitable. At all. While your idea would be awesome, the problem isn't from our end, but theirs. They don't have the resources for that.

You see, I would maybe think this way if one of my guys died. But seriously, I worked so hard to make sure that every squad mate made it out alive. My whole crew survived and so did all my squad mates.

Do they expect me to believe that when facing the reapers, Shepard is really gunna go...hey umm guys I know your really power full and that we did a great job killing that last reaper larva...but I'm probably only gunna need about half of you so...GET OUT!

I actually don't like this decision as most of these characters have had an entire game to be fleshed out. I'd like to see Mass Effect 3 have a larger potential roster than any prior game...where everyone is available to join you but only will based on decisions that have been made.

I do agree with their logic though...games in general don't need a huge squad number as they need to develop characters...but in the case of ME, this point is moot simply because its the third installment.

It would be great if your squad mates are the ones that survived during Mass effect 1 and 2. If almost all member did survive, they'd let you pick who you want.

I'd say that 8 characters would be enough.
