This doesn't surprise me in any way at all. Dragon Age 2 may have been received poorly(I didn't mind it too much), it sold pretty well.
Hopefully they take all the criticism that hardcore fans have given them and find a good middle ground for everybody to enjoy the next game.
Definitely needs more variation in locations though.
I don't really see why they need a middle ground. Origins went way over their expected sales, and was received a lot more positively. I think that even whilst DA2 sold more in the first week or so, its sales dropped pretty quickly, whereas Origins was much more steady.
Exactly, it took a bit for Origins to grow on me, but once it did I loved the game.
DA 2 though? Not. At. All. I'm bored with the game and I haven't even finished the first act. I don't feel compelled to play because there is nothing to push you forwards. Origins always had the backdrop of some great evil just waiting to attack. Two though, there is no villain, you just meander through the same 3-4 basic layouts again and again, over and over and over, for nothing.
And Auxilary, voice work doesn't take up that much space, be honest here. Hell Origins had more than a good chunk of voicework done, and yet it still had a varied environment. It was just lazy hacked together design. Hell, the Elder Scroll games have voicework too, and they somehow manage to be rather massive.
