Amazing. You have a high fantasy RPG that has a cult following among your core fans. They read the books, they have the game music on their mp3 players, they start threads about the morality of saving a minor NPC. It sells 4 million copies.
You then take that game, gut out a ton of RPG elements, make it all emo for a teen audience, go all action cartoon, knowing full well that you'll lose 50% of your fans. However you are sure the new formula will bring in "10 million" new fans.
Reality kicks in. You do indeed lose 50% of your new fans, but, quel horreur ... you don't get the 10 million new ones. In fact, sales are <50% of the first game. What do you do? Why, go for Dragon Age 3, of course! and rule out any "180 degree design changes" over DA2 (Lead designer Gameinformer interview), just fix the copy pasta levels with tweet for a new 3D designer and we're good!
