This is no Star Wars, there is no room for an old republic (a universe without humans is not going to fly) and there is no room for an expanded universe ... so what's left is highly boxed in.

I have to agree with this. Maybe some kind of threat to the Citadel that a Spectre is sent to investigate. And only the Citadel. Smaller scale, but still serious enough to warrant a game around.
I recommend a detective-like story with more emphasis on mystery surrounding a less catastrophic event with a sweet twist. It's hard to continually feel for the fate of all mankind... over, and over, and over again. Armageddon is getting tired.

I dunno if I want more. With the ending being explained better in the extended cut I feel pretty much satisfied with the conclusion. I think if they continue it any further it'd just feel weird. I mean, where do you go from there? The story's over. And with some of the best people in the company leaving and EA in charge, let's be honest, any continuation will not be great.

You're not? Well, I am. Have fun with Mass Effect: Black Ops! (Or is it "Mass Effect: ODST?")

what do you mean by no room for an expanded universe?

I don't think anyone is surprised, the horse isn't dead yet and you can bet anything EA will still be flogging it long after it is. I don't think ME3 will be hard to beat either, not saying it wasn't good, I just think better isn't a far leap.

We all knew they weren't finished with the series, hell they've been saying that pretty much since the first game was released.

I still have faith that Bioware can deliver a good product, but I'm cautious in my optimism.

I just hope they don't go the MMO route; it seems the most likely thing for them to do, but maybe there's a small chance that they won't.

Personally I'd like to see another RPG, but one that's kinda like the Elder Scrolls in space. I'm not holding my breath on that, of course.

Who is really going to buy anything ME3 related?

After the last poor showing we all know what its going to be.
A generic shooter, with a generic white male lead, with chest high walls, and bad DLC and DRM.
Not really a generic shooter though, is it. Nor does the lead need to be male or white. Shit DLC I'll give you. And as much as it pains me to say it, using Origin has never actually hindered me. It's inoffensive.

Unless what we've played so far constitutes the old republic equivalent. And I think there's plenty of room for an expanded universe. It's a galaxy full of characters.

I do wish they'd not do any more, though. It's painfully apparent this is horse that's going to have its corpse fucked.

So we all knew that the Omega DLC was in the works the moment Aria showed up and we didn't end up retaking the place in the game. No surprise there, but it's about time. I'm surprised they didn't do this one first honestly. I wonder if they did the Leviathan DLC first in order to try to make the ending work better.
Also, we already knew they weren't done with the universe. They said that there would be games after Mass Effect 3. It's just that ME3 would finish Shepard's story. I agree that it's kind of hard to follow the whole, "Entire galactic life as we know it is doomed!" story, but it can be done. So, on to ideas!

Set the game before the Reaper invasion. Maybe during one of the many wars we always hear about. Krogan Rebellions, Rachni Wars, First Contact War. There are plenty to choose from. There just better not be a single HINT of Reapers anyway. No character going, "Hm...what is this strange machine?" because Shepard was the first person to figure them out and start really talking about them. I don't want there to be another person before her going, "Hey, look. There's this evil race of machines out there!"
Second idea is set it during the rebuilding of the galaxy. Yes, the galaxy is saved, but it's still going to be a mess. There are going to be plenty of criminals trying to exploit people, gangs roaming areas, places that need rebuilding but are too dangerous. And the Leviathans didn't exactly sound friendly.
You could also bring Shepard back. It wouldn't be hard. In destroy ending, she's still alive and the crew goes to find her. In control, all that needs to be done is build her a body like EDI's and bam! Finally, since synthesis is already magic, I'm sure they can recover her essence and bring her back that way. Fun times, although I'm sure millions of fans would be really mad if they did any of those.

Well, the original premise of "Player choices matter" got butchered at the end of ME3.
There really isn't anything left to lose; might as well see some decent character stories that don't follow Shepard.

Go for it, Bioware. We'll see the limits of your patience...or the patience of your audience.

LEAVE MASS EFFECT ALONE! (sob)

But like people said, when I read this I saw visions of a dead horse being dragged behind a car. Unless they repudiate the creative direction they took in ME3, I don't see this ending well.

Bioware has lost so much credibility in my eyes, I'll believe their words when I see the results for myself. Anything they make will have to be released, reviewed, scutinized and dissected before I ever spend money on it again.

unfortunately, due to the massive amounts of backlash over DA2 this probably won't be the case

Yeah, I don't care if you wanna keep flogging the dead horse- I'm done paying for tickets.

Enjoy your accessorized dead albatross, your "artistic integrity" and your micro transactions. I hope your private circle jerk with EA ends with you all ripping off your own dangly bits.

I enjoyed the heck outta Mass Effect 2, but have yet to muster up the time and energy to play 3 just yet. So yes I've heard the huge amount of fallout over its ending, but I'll be the judge of that later on for myself lol

clearly I'm not quick on the go to jump into the series immediately, but hey if it plays well then by all means make more (just might wanna turn off the Internet for a while for the sake of the dev's sanity)

It's a big, fascinating universe that they've built, but I'm worried that the article hit the nail on the head: ME3 had a storyline with the whole galaxy on the line. This next game will either seem small by comparison or have some absurd, contrived galactic emergency.

If the Star Wars expanded universe proves anything, its that threatening the galaxy with extinction over and over again takes the teeth out of a threat. Eventually it becomes "Yawn, another threat to the galaxy. What a shocker."

Curious to see what BioWare does, though. Cautiously optimistic for now.
