Cover systems are fun, because everyone plays the same. This means you don't have to.

Outflanking morons tucked behind chest high walls with a shotgun. That is my definition of fun.

Or throwing a grenade on Gears of War usually does the trick, mainly because you can throw it blatantly in their face and their first reaction is "OH SHIT HOW DO I BREAK FROM COVER?"

You know what's boring?

Having a super-macho bullet-absorbing meatsuit bursting in and shooting everything with a minigun without a single challenge or thought.

What honestly is the fun in having a scenario like that? While I will admit that cover-based shooting games can be boring, it's not usually because it's a cover-based shooter game. It's usually because it sucks.

I found cover-based shooting mostly boring, until I started playing the beta for Bad Company 2 about a week ago. It's much more fun when your cover can be instantly blown away, leaving you sitting in open terrain like an idiot. But I guess both cover-based shooting and Serious Sam/Doom style has their pros and cons.
Exactly. The cover system is much more fun when the cover can be blown up around you. Those moments in the demo where someone blew up the wall in front of the first objective were pretty intense.

Basically, this was the most badass FPS of all time.

"In Black, pull the trigger and earth cracks, mountains crumble and rivers boil... and that's just the fucking pistol."

I bought the game because a friend recommended it to me, and had never read anything about it. Imagine my surprise as I sat in the attic of a building, getting ready for some serious sniping/trolling and half the side of the bloody house was blown away. Instant awesome game moment.

Okay here is a little suggestion to all those "who needs a cover system is a loser"-bullshit sayers.

Enemy Ai can get into cover since a LONG time. They even can pop out and shoot you while YOU the player, just needed to show a glimpse of himself to get a good hit from an enemy.
That is especially annoying in nice games like Modern Warfare.

Those cover systems are finally giving you the same chance.

As long as devs don't have a system where aren't showing anything over a edge of any cover cause the playermodel is a few inches higher then the cover you are kneeing behind, they should shut the fuck up.

There are two things that i really hate, running backwards the last kilometer you just had to cross, shooting incoming creatures (seriously can there be an cheaper enemy design) and getting fucked cause your playermodel shows a nippel out of the cover while your enemys all take cover, hidden perfectly, behind whatever they are hiding.

For those people who foolishly skipped Black back in the day... let me tell you this guy knows what he is talking about. I "like" cover based shooters but I LOVE really intense and frenetic first persons shooters like Black.

Black will remain one of those all time great yet under-appreciated classics and it just had a level and intensity of action that would go unmatched till COD4 and to an extent COD4 failed to match Black and IMHO killzone 2 WISHES it could be Black.

Interesting that the developers has moved from one studio famous for racing games (Criterion) to another famous for racing (Codemasters) only to make a First person shooter. I hear EA still hold the rights to the "Black" franchise so here's hoping they are grown up and sell those rights to the original developers for a reasonable price. Don't want any of this "Project Origin" bullshit all over again.

I agree. When you play an old school shooter like Doom again ,after having been accustomed to most modern titles, then you realise what awesome, quick fun it is.

Screw cover mechanics.

Never played Black, I heard it was good, but I never played it. Anyways, I think it's just a matter of opinion. I personally don't mind taking cover, after all; dying isn't fun.

I dunno, rainbow six vegas was easily one of my favorite shooters of this generation, simply because it incorporated that cover system VERY well, and was still an incredibly challenge. Boring? I find quite a bit of joy in trying to find the most sensible location to start a firefight, maybe having to move around a bit and take cover elsewhere, while trying to time that perfect headshot without getting sprayed to death in the midst.

From the creator of a game as mediocre and bland as Black, this statement means very little to me. If it's so damn dull, they really should do something to change it up, wouldn't you think?
Well, it works in Rainbow Six because the player's health is so low, they can take barely any gunfire to take down. I was finding things like Gears of War a total cake walk. The first time I played it, the game was set to its hardest difficulty and I was still not dying. What is really the point in cover if your character can be riddled with bullets and survive anyway?
you've just nailed my biggest problems with almost every FPS in general. i prefer the take a few bullets and yer toast approach, the spray an entire clip and hope yer bullets are faster mentality does nothing but drive me insane. gears of war was a perfect example. accuracy was hardly rewarded, and going commando was the way to win.
