Black Dev Calls Current Shooters "F*cking Boring"

When playing ME2 I thought the cover system was alright, but that it was a bit too easy overall. The most entertaining bits was when I broke cover, stormed over to some guy in cover and pistol whipped him. I was playing on normal so I cranked it up a notch to see if that would make it more fun, but it just made it more tedious. Now I had to specifically time when to lean out to shot, and I could never storm an entrenched foe anymore.

Considering how the script plays you off as being a space superhero it'd be nice to be able to do superhero stuff rather than cowering behind a box and slowly plinking away at enemies.

It does work good with the AI though. Rarely did I get annoyed with my AI buddies getting needlessly killed, and I guess there's a point to slowing the gameplay down for consoles. But other than that, yes, shooters HAVE become more boring, and I'd love to see some unrealism be brought back to my unrealistic worlds.

lol, the fucking irony of a developer of black (of all things) calling shooters boring
You... couldn't even be bothered to read the title of the post? :(

Just because it was a cover based game, doesn't mean when you choose to play whack-a-mole all the time and get to call it boring, espcially when you are the creator of Bland oww sorry Black.

Dang. Got beaten to it.

I played Black. Pretty game, and the gun mechanics of "blow shit up to the nth degree" were fun, but other than that, it was a pretty standard shooter to me.

I don't play video games for realism! I applaud Stuart Black for saying what needed to be said. MW2 was fucking ludicrous storywise and uninteresting multiplayer wise. That may seem like a contradiction but MW2's story sucked and was completely boring in multiplayer. Don't like it then go screw. I'm bored.

Sometimes I forget to even use cover, but that usually doesn't end well. But I don't really mind, a shooter can be fun with or without cover, it doesn't just boil down to that.

hmm, I can see his point....to a point.

But if the cover shooting is done well it has it's own style that's fun.
I mean...it's the whole typical 24 Jack Bauer movie like scenarios. That's fun.

Black is an awesome game and I can't wait for the sequel which I hope will be on PC as well.

Cover system is fun in some games like Gears of War. But I don't like that devs are focusing too much on cover system these days, you don't even have the option to run and gun anymore. I'd like a game where you have the option to take cover. Covers should be a necessary evil only in tight situations when you are waaay outnumbered. Shooting from cover all the time is fuckin' boring. Except in Gears of War. It's the core of Gears gameplay and that's what it's all about and I love it just the way it is. But breaking from cover for an intense shootout is a must. I hope Rockstar will do this for Max Payne 3 since cover is already confirmed.

Totally agree with him- I remember the first time I played Gears of War, from the makers of 'launch yourself off a ledge and blast someone's head off in midair with a pulse rifle' Unreal Tournament, and found this game about a bunch of overweight man-hulks slow shuffling their way around, and only EVER being able to kill something by hugging a wall and aiming from behind it- never mind the fact that they wouldn't be able to see ANYTHING from down there.

I don't mind a game having cover, as long as the game takes a gamer's word for it that they can find it and use it when and how THEY see fit, rather than forcing us to use it all the time, and even having to press a button to get there. That's the ultimate insult to the player.

But whatever. Stuart Black, consider your marketing ploy a success. You haven't even announced your next FPS project and I'm already intensely interested in what you'll bring out next, mainly because you seem to understand what makes a visceral FPS fun more than most devs these days.

You know, taking cover makes for a better game. Why? Because taking cover is realistic, making it more imersive than other shooters that don't have cover ... Which gives it that something extra.
I wouldn't say so. Yes, using the environment to CONCEAL yourself is realistic but since the 1920's weapons have been so powerful that they will shoot right through any cover you try to use as a barrier. Not to mention sitting around in one spot will get you flanked or rained on with grenades, mortars and even rockets.

Also, I hate the "lock" into cover as it just makes it too hard to get out of there if your position is screwed. Another thing with locked in cover is it makes it way too hard to just peek around cover. It also acts as if most of the cover in the game is the corner of a corridor or dozens of "awfully convenient" waist height walls.

Cover is things like in the top floor of a building moving all around inside the building to get the best angle to shoot down on targets below yet not expose yourself to anyone you are not aiming at. One game that did this very well was Medal of Honor Airborne, it allowed you to move your head+origin of aim around freely in space to get the perfect angle to shoot from cover.

The key is to not "lock" our back to a wall like a bloody magnet, it looks cool for about 5 seconds and then it just gets annoying. What happened to just a crouch button? Blind fire is utterly pointless.

When I play Gears of War I try to avoid using cover at all and prefer "blitzkrieg" tactics of constantly moving around to get the best angle to shoot them. The problem is the controls are build assuming you will just sit in cover and take your time, picking off the enemies slowly so it is hard as hell to do this.
