I was expecting something like Asura's Wrath with less emphasis on QTEs and more fleshed out combat system. So yeah this sounds about right. Complex combat is right up my alley! :D

8/10 from IGN.
It seems to be sitting at mid 8s right now, which is actually where Stellar Blade ended up too I believe. Low-mid 8 is the new 10 I guess XD.

Reviews are in.

Edit: There's a lot of bugs in the pc version, past chapter 2. Nobody can show them because of the embargo. I hate that and it's a really dumb rule. Some reviewers found a work around making two separate review videos. One before release date and the other on release day or afterward to show what bugs happen in later chapters

ACG likes the game overall, but it does have issues that has been pointed out already

Seems about right. It's exactly in the "Stellar Blade" section of my brain, along with Lies of P, Rise of the Ronin, etc- I'll check it out if/when it's part of some big sale or subscription service and I'm not playing something better.

This video pretty much sums up my first impressions with the game after about 90minutes or so.

The combat system doesn't really feel intuitive and it isn't explained well in the game at all. But I feel like it's one of those systems that will eventually "click" with you and then the game really feels good to play. Right now I'm not there yet and the game doesn't feel great, it feels like enemies are too fast and your character is too slow, dodge timings feel really awkward due to the speed of the enemies as well.

I think the biggest issue for me right now is that a lot of the enemies do the Elden Ring thing where they raise their fists to attack and then just hold onto that attack for too long before finally swinging the fist at you at lightning speed. So you dodge when you think it's coming but it's actually too soon and you can't react to the attack once it starts moving. Which makes the dodging feel like a guessing game of "did I wait long enough while you held onto this attack you're about to do" and most of the time you didn't.

There are a lot of upgrades in the talent tree that improve the dodge so it might just be one of those things where the dodge is specifically bad until you level up enough which is always kind of shitty feeling.

The good news is that you lose nothing on death, not even exp, and since enemies respawn you can grind out levels if you want to try and give yourself a better edge against whatever roadblock you're up against. I've beaten two bosses so far and I'm on the 3rd which feels like it's the first "real" boss. There was also a mini boss in the level that I had to skip because it would one-shot me and I feel like it's a "come back later" kind of thing.

Ah, so every action game since Sekiro.

Wol Long F***ing Dynasty et al...

My "Elden Ring ruined action games" position still stands then.

Appreciate you sharing your experiences on this one.

I will say to be fair, the enemies don't do a lot of damage like in Elden Ring. You aren't fucked from a single hit and even the bosses take 4-5 hits on you before you die assuming you don't heal. So it's a lot more forgiving than ER.

Thank you for the info and gameplay sharing @CriticalGaming. I will pick up this game later after a 1/2 price drop. When I get back from Florida, I'll be playing Shadow of the Ninja Reborn. That's my most anticipated game right now, followed by Sonic X Shadow Generations, and then Shadows of the Damned Remastered.

How's the story, though? From what I understand it's not exactly 1:1 retelling of the journey to the west, and kinda like God Of War it takes creative liberty from the source material

It’s interesting watching game after game in this genre try to differentiate itself from everything else just enough. The market is crowded as hell now and the “been there/done that” fatigue effect has accumulated over several generations. I wonder if and when someone will do something that makes people rethink of how these games can be played.

Last generation was about physically based object rendering for visuals, and I always thought it would be neat if the same could be applied to physics for gameplay interactions. Visuals can’t really get a whole lot better, so why not use some of that processing power to do stuff more dynamically via destructible environments/character models/etc. Little things here and there point to that direction like different damage types exploiting enemy weaknesses in various action adventure games, or the glass in TLoU2 to get in a room when a door’s locked. RDR2 has detailed physics being able to target and injure different body parts, and some surprisingly good collision effects. There’s reddit videos of an NPC coin toss being deflected by a throwing knife, a bullet ricocheting off of a tomahawk the player was about to throw, etc.

IIRC that one Ubisoft game For Honor might’ve had more physically based melee interactions, but I suppose there’s also limits as to what constitutes “fun” since it didn’t seem like that game held much of an audience.

So I played for maybe 3 hours cause Granblue Versus got a new char yesterday too. Loving the game so far. It's definitely got bloodborne DNA more than any other game, you gotta be aggressive and dodge everything while attacking. I don't have too many moves yet but the main elements all feel responsive and satisfying, and the spell/transformation stuff is hype too.

There's this focus meter which builds as you attack and dodge stuff which lets you do cool heavy moves, and those also can function as dodges by seeing through enemy attacks (basically if you time em right they gain invuln frames) so you're NOT supposed to just dodge stuff all day, ideally you're supposed to attack THROUGH it, which makes sense as a fighting game player but maybe for non-fighting game players it's weird. Either way, I feel I only scratched the surface here, tons more depth awaits.

How's the story, though? From what I understand it's not exactly 1:1 retelling of the journey to the west, and kinda like God Of War it takes creative liberty from the source material
Nah this is like a sequel, the entire game takes place after the OG journey to the west has ended, Wukong gets screwed by the other bhuddas (there's a standoff with the 10000 soldiers and everything!) and gets semi killed and you play as the destined one centuries later who is maybe or maybe not his reincarnation (mainly he just looks like him a lot and can also turn his hair into a staff) and is trying to recover his dispersed power.

I gotta say, I really love OG's personality, he's very brash and wise and epic, I was getting goosebumps. If you love the story this is for you. Oh and I was playing with Chinese voices. English voice acting has this weird thing American dubbing does where characters have accents for no damn reason.

Black Myth: Wukong is off to an excellent start but PS5 needs performance improvement patches

The good news is that Black Myth: Wukong isn’t a repeat of Cyberpunk 2077. The game is playable and seems to hold up well… provided you stick to the Balanced Mode.

Those who have been attempting to play on the Performance Mode for some 60 fps goodness have complained of constant stuttering, poor image quality, and texture issues. The Quality Mode offers 30-35 fps whereas the Balanced mode can go up 45 fps. The general consensus is that Performance Mode isn’t the best way to play right now.

Interestingly, Black Myth: Wukong’s console performance has bizarrely polarized players. On one extreme, we’ve seen folks swear that there are absolutely no performance issues whatsoever (spoiler: this isn’t true), and on the other hand, some folks swear that the game is unplayable (spoiler: this also isn’t true).

If you’re not fussy about a lower frame rate and can make compromises in the graphics department, Black Myth: Wukong’s current PS5 performance shouldn’t be an issue for you. However, if you’re in the opposite camp, we suggest waiting for a patch or two.

I'm playing it on ps5, quality setting on a 4k tv and it has been fine so far. I think people make a big deal out of performance issues. Game looks super gorgeous.
