Fuck protecting the children, I refuse to allow my country or any other turn into a fucking nanny state just before parents are too damn lazy to take care of their little drooling pest's, not us or the government. I'll be glad when the "Think of the Children!" crowd is old and dead....

OT: This won't end well, just you watch. I'm pretty sure we tried something like this here in the US with booze and the mob ended up have an iron clad grip of the place for a while....
oh, fantastic, thats what we need, porn based mafia, trolls roving the *actual* streets in packs, millions of homicidal sexually frustrated nerds wandering around.

What the fuck is wrong with people that actually support this kind of stupidity. I feel sorry for the children of this world growing up in "human safe" padded rooms. Fucking pansies...

"This is the wrong way to go. If the government controlled a web blacklist, you can bet that Wikileaks would be on it," said Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group [http://www.openrightsgroup.org/]. "This is not about pornography, it is about generalized censorship through the back door."
I have been silent on this issue for far too long.

"...censorship through the back door." Teehee
Haha, i got a giggle aswell.

OT: It won't happen. To many over reactions in this thread. And if it does? I'll just call up my ISP and ask to reactivate it. No big deal.

ISP Operator: How may i help you, Sir?
Me: Give me my fucking porn!!!
ISP Operator: Okay, Sir. Right away.

I'm not sure an ISP could ban porn. There's so many hundreds of thousands of porn websites out there that finding all of them on a list, keeping that list updated, and the logistics of utilizing that list, would be perhaps beyond available technology and available manpower to do.
You know how almost every website in existance is mirroring WikiLeaks right now to support Mr. Julian Assange? Well with porn sites, it'll be that time a million or so. It would be quite literally impossible to keep up.

Why is this a problem?

They're not banning it (way to fear-monger, Escapist!), they're simply ensuring you don't get it unless you specifically request access to it. You can still access it, you just have to say "Give it to me, please."
Whats to stop your ISP from letting EVERYONE YOU'VE EVER KNOWN know that you requested the right to access porn? What happens when you're employer fires you because they consider you "deviant" for watching porn? Never-mind whether you actually watch it or not. Yeah, you're right. I don't see how that could possibly lead to anything bad.

EDIT: Wow triple post, oops.

This is late. The ISPs already told them it was a stupid idea and an impossible task.
Where did you hear that?
BBC News.

The ISPs essentially say it's too much hassle, and a pipe dream for "PROTECT THE CHILDREN" idiots.
Still, the fact that people want and are actively campaigning for this unprecedented level of censorship is certainly frightening...
It's not everyone just some religous or political wacko's who want attention, like trolls pay them no attention and they'll go away. I mean if this went through the press would have a field day with this not to mention that quite a few mp's wouldn't be happy and harriet harman's husband.

I can hack through the school programs that block the inappropriate sites, (supposedly the gov. made the program) its not that hard, if this passes, all the kids will know this method too, it'll be an exposed private handshake.

It's still miles better than the Australian version. They don't GIVE us the option to opt in.

That said, I find it incredibly strange how countries that I once looked up to as being liberal and free beacons have suddenly fallen into the hands of ultra-conservatives: Australia, UK, US and even Japan. How did this happen?

Why? Why not have the people who do not want pornography content request such filters? Why not have these same people be the ones to request television censorship as well? I'm sure the rest of the population that is not living inside of a bubble is perfectly capable of deciding what they want to expose themselves to, not the Government.

Parents already have a large array of resources at their disposal; it is simply a matter of being competent enough to use them. Why should those who are not get a break at the expense of all else, though? They provide the essential means of access to various content (Games, music, movies, internet, ect.) and have only themselves to blame when innocent little Timmy starts killing hookers in Grand Theft Auto, listening to NWA, watches saw, and googles "naked."

There are two general types of parental controls:

1) Those that allow parents to filter what their child is exposed to and

2) Contraceptives that prevent the dolts of the world from becoming parents in the first place.

So half the country riots over increased tuition fees. The rest of the country can riot over lack of porn.

While the ones not included can sit and wonder what the fuck Royal Mail are doing with our post.

I'd make some semi-witty quip about having parents supervise their children and these measures being unnecessary, but eh. It's all about censorship these days - the UK is merely trying to catch up to America's level of abuse of power (in the name of protecting the citizenry, of course.) Which is almost cute. <3

I echo all the "censorship" comments, as well as the general concensus in the article. There's gonna be some very unhappy w-nkers out there if this goes ahead...
