I still say the game the defined FPS and multiplayer was Doom....the Counterstroke came along and made it a bit better....Halo was cool.......just a little over the top in some areas....Unreal Tournament was awesomeMcNinja said:Black was awesome. On topic- If there's one thing Halo did, it was help pave the way to modern online multiplayer.
Xbox Live existed before Halo 2. But not many people played on it. Then Halo 2 came about, and people started playing on it. Millions of people. So XBL was there, Halo 2 made people aware.Mr. Mike said:Okay yes, major typos in my paragraph. My bad. What I meant to say was that online gaming in general has been done far more successfully on PC before Halo even existed. While Halo 2 might have been one of the first major successes as far as console online gaming goes, to me it's like one of those fools on IGN that always posts "First!". Congratulations, you were first, now can you add something decent with that?
Furthermore, I wouldn't say Halo 2 was the innovator here. Microsoft's Xbox Live was the innovator. Halo 2 just happened to be a popular game that many adopted. Halo 2 was the catalyst, not the overall industry-changing thing.
And for the record, I'm not a PC fanboy at all. If anything, I'm a PS3 fanboy. Yet I have not mentioned that once. I do not hate Microsoft, nor the Xbox. I'd take a Windows computer over a Mac any day. The 360 is a very capable machine and owns the PS3 over local multiplayer gaming by a long shot.
Nonetheless, Halo 2 isn't the industry changer you say it is. Xbox Live was, and Halo 2 was just a popular game for it.

Well if you really wanna get technical Doom was on PS1 which predated halo so.........you POINT?
How was Halo 2 influential exactly? Maybe I'm just a cynic but Halo 1 was far superior to Halo 2 given the handicap with the crappy dual weapons system.John Funk said:...Doom on PS1 was nowhere near as influential as Halo 2 was.Azalin137 said:John Funk said:You do get that we're all talking about CONSOLE FPS, yes?Azalin137 said:I still say the game the defined FPS and multiplayer was Doom....the Counterstroke came along and made it a bit better....Halo was cool.......just a little over the top in some areas....Unreal Tournament was awesomeMcNinja said:Black was awesome. Halo 2 made online multiplayer on consoles a central part of the whole experience.

meh.........I play all my FPS's on PC due to the superiority of a Keyboard/Mouse interface.... so I really enjoyed Halo on PC and I own Halo 3 on XBOX 360 since it was a gift (havent opened it yet) Personally I could care less.....Im just saying Halo 2 is cool but not THAT great.....John Funk said:Read the second part of my post, please.Azalin137 said:How was Halo 2 influential exactly? Halo 2 made online multiplayer on consoles a central, expected part of the experience. Before, online console play was a novelty at best - you had Crimson Skies, MechAssault, yes, but maybe a few thousand players, tops. Halo 2 exploded the popularity of Xbox Live, cemented online on consoles as the way of the future going forward, in a way like no other game did.
Modern Warfare 2's millions of people playing on XBL concurrently? That was all thanks to Halo 2 breaking new ground.
