So we'll probably see a more watered down Battlefield 2142?

Whatever, I have Halo for my future space shooter needs, and plenty other games based in the future for my future game needs.

Trademarks filed by Activision could hint at the future of Call of Duty.

This week, Activision filed multiple trademarks discovered by Call of Duty: Black Ops [http://supererogatory.tumblr.com/post/596092270/created-on-2010-05-11]. The company covered multiple bases with the filings, indicating that CoD could go to the future, into space, or beyond.

Here is the full list of what was trademarked:

callofdutyfuturewarfare2.com
callofdutyfuturewarfare3.com
advancedwarfare2.com
advancedwarfare3.com
codfuturewarfare.com

secretwarfare2.com

spacewarfare2.com

The most likely candidate for another Call of Duty game would be Future Warfare in my mind, or possibly Secret Warfare though it sounds a bit similar to Black Ops. Space Warfare also infers that whatever is in-development, in a concept phase, or simply an idea, involves much more than futuristic guns and mechs.

Activision could just be looking into the future for places it may want to take the series even if it doesn't plan to currently. The variations here appear to mean that nothing is concrete, but something may be in the works. After World War II got stale, Call of Duty was brought into modern times with Modern Warfare, so it makes perfect sense to take the popular FPS forward in time again to avoid making the current-day stale too. This is all speculation, but let's face it, it's probably going to happen in some form.

Wow, I'm glad there haven't been any near future FPS with hovercrafts and mech tanks before.

Oh... wait....

I swear it looks just like a prettied up Battlefield 2142.
So, it'll effectively be BF2142 except that it won't be good? Hardly a surprise.

Finally!

This is what I've wanted since I first played MW.
You could try one of the Mechwarrior games... ye know, that *other* "MW" acronym game series....

I would not mind seeing Infinity Ward make a Star Wars FPS. I know there is a Star Wars mod out there for the PC version of COD 4. I think if Lucas Arts hired the right writers they could make a good Star Wars FPS with Infinity Ward.

Epic fail, Escapist. A domain name is not a trademark.

Activision are just hedging their bets. They don't want some squatter buying up the domains and charging them obscene moneys to buy them back in the unlikely event that they ever decided to make a game with one of those names.

Whats next?
"COD" of Heroes?
COD in arms?
COD of war?
COD age?
COD dawn of war?
COD Darth Vader?
COD wars?
COD Trek?
This is ridiculous.

That's the most sensible response I've seen from anyone yet. I like that you aren't saying "Oh, it's going to suck a mokey's gooch because it has the COD name on it" (please note that this last bit was an exaggeration and was not meant as a personal shot at anyone). You have made a very nice point that distinguishes you from the other commenters here. Nice work man, very nicely done.

It seems Call of Duty has come a long way. The nostalgia hits me like a ton of bricks when I watch videos of the original games... but now, I'm just not too sure. Personally? Call me when United Offensive's multiplayer is active again.
There's always the Texas Militia Base Assault server. I don't think it'll ever go down. Makes me miss my days being a .

One thing about this kind of thing (as others are pointing out) is that they might just be doing a bit of pre-emptive preparation for titles they might want to use for a long running "bread and butter" franchise. By taking these names they prevent cyber squatting... someone else taking the name, and then demanding big bucks from them to use it. An issue that has occured on a number of occasions with mixed results.

I still remember back when the radio host Imus ran into a Cyber-Squatter who had pretty much taken up most names that involved "Imus" and "Ranch" specifically in preparation for when he wanted to set up a site for his children's charity ranch that he runs. It was really messed up, though this was a while ago, and due to sporadic listening I don't know how it all played out in the end.... this was also back before Imus got fired and went (I believe) to Satellite Radio, and was with The FAN, so we're not talking anything recent.

I like where this is heading, as mw2 was unbalanced probably because they were so desperate to find new features to add, but since they are moving to the future, they can start new again.
