The thing is that they are trying to monetize services and content that most developers up until now have been providing for free, as part of their plan to make their games more lucrative for players. We're getting to the point where Activision will be agonizingly searching for ways to charge you for every single KB of data that you download for their games, on top of their purchase price, and the reason why they are doing this is because their games already sell so well that they simply don't care. It's called greed and arrogance. And what sort of power do you really think we have? What's the percentage of gamers that also regularly read the escapist or similar sites, are aware of what's going on and spend their money consciously and with that in mind? 2%? 5%? The rest are sheep. They see a cool game, they buy it. They see a map that their friend is playing on and costs 15$? They buy it. They don't know the difference between dev and publisher, they don't read their statements, they don't care or have time for that crap. And we are at their mercy, the only power we have is to stand by and watch.Slycne said:What? I'm sorry. Paying for additional content, it's almost like that's the basics of economics. They are not saying they want to start charging for what you already have, that would be a really stupid business decision and despite whatever else you might think of them they do want to make money. You buy new games all the time, sequels, DLC and MMOs continue to pay for new content. That's all their saying.
If the content they are offering is not worth the price of subscription then don't buy it, simple as that. You all realize you have the power in this right? If you don't buy they don't make money, if they don't make money they either need to change or go out of business. So quit with all the bitching, seriously.
That's what us PC gamers thought when we heard about the removal of dedicated servers and mods... We thought PC gamers would just move one of the many other PC games out there that had dedicated servers/modding. But allot of people didn't do that.Fire Daemon said:Subscriptions only work when there are no other games in the same league as that game. The reason that WoW makes a lot of money from subscriptions is because you're not going to get a WoW-like experience for another game without subscription fees. You have MMO's that are similar and free, yes, but they're always different in some way or form and so people will still buy WoW if they want WoW or get the no subscription game if they want that, and often they only get one.
People that play shooters own plenty of them and swap between frequently except maybe straight after the release of a big title. Shooter fans are happy to play a wide variety of shooters online, plenty of older games or games pushed out of the limelight still have an active community. If Activision did charge fees for MW2 I will stop playing and pick up a new title or go back to Halo 3, TF2 and maybe even CoD4. I might even give Gears of War a swing again. Shooter fans will shy away from fees because what they can get from one game online is about as fun as another and for free. One game will have to be extremely good online for someone to even want to pay fees. It would also need a justification for the fee, which FPS just don't have.
There is a difference between a lack dedicated servers and a fee. Despite the matachmaking (actually I would say that matchmaking makes MW2 better in some regards but that is for a different time and place) not being that great the game is still playable and if you happen to live in the USA, quite good. The experience is still really, really good. I think that there are plenty of gamers who don't really care about the server or mod issues and just want to press a button and play. With a fee however you have new hoop to cross, more buttons to press. For Mr 'just take me to a game already' this is going to be a major deciding force in their purchase. In my opinion the fact that people don't care about the server issue shows to me that less people will pay the fee, because they take multiplayer more casually. I can't see the casual players paying money for an FPS when others go free.Bobbovski said:That's what us PC gamers thought when we heard about the removal of dedicated servers and mods... Personally I think we all should be very, very worried and be very afraid of the stupidity and blind faithfulness of mainstream gamers...
Just out of curiosity, what kind of service and content do you think they are referring too?Carnagath said:The thing is that they are trying to monetize services and content that most developers up until now have been providing for freeSlycne said:What?
