is that really any different to straight guys obsession with lesbains?

EDIT: sorry "lesbains"
Do straight guys try to aggressively ship female characters together even though they're shown to not be lesbians? I don't think I've ever seen this happen before.
It definitely happens. Rule 34 is blind.

You just need to spend some time on the Mass Effect kink meme then.
Heh. Still, let's just agree that we never see straight guys who ship Kim Possible with Shego, write detailed and explicit sex scenes with them, and then insist that you're a homophobe if you don't like it.
Give me ten minutes and I can prove all of those points (With a very probably exception of the last one) wrong.

Odd, because the person who identified as demi-sexual, the one you were talking to, said that he was indeed sexual, just barely sexual. Also, I can't really comment on the changing of the word. I googled it and all I got was the "not interested in sex unless there's an emotional connection." Eternally also said that the term helps people form an identity. Ergo he DIDN'T call it pointless. He flat out said he didn't agree with the opposition to it, just that he understood where they were coming from.

Also you ignored my blue comment.
They only claimed to be sexual after the argument had already started, and it's only now, after it, that we see it's due to the mix up of the term not having a (apparent) universal definition. Hour blue comment is redundant since it's something we all agree on (though weather or not some "shades" of this argument even merit a name. I have a much stronger sexual attraction to East and Central European as well as East Asian women then I do to South Asian or Arabic or Sub-Saharan women, is there a name for THAT? Does there even need to be one for that?)

The problem this whole argument stems from is a by-product of how internet culture has formed: the decentralized subcultures have started to use terms which have not solidified themselves yet in different ways, so this leads to problems such as this where people from two different subcultures meet and use the same terms and get into an argument about it simply due to the fact that the spheres both come from use the term differently.
I'm pretty sure that I made it clear that I was sexual in my first post. In fact the entire intention of that post was to get across what a demisexual experience is like, and why it's distinct from, for lack of a better word, "normal" sexual attraction. Since a common response is something along the lines of "that's how everyone works." I think you'll find that the definition I'm using is the one that's commonly accepted and used on any wiki or search you'd want to use.

No offense, but it sounds like this is mainly coming down to you misunderstanding the term. I can't find your definition anywhere online, so it just sounds like you took the term literally. Demi-sexual, literally half sexual. There most likely isn't a term for that because unlike the person you were talking to, you don't need a special term in order to realize you aren't a freak of nature.

See above.

I'm certain you could find the odd example or two, but I'm positive you won't find anywhere near the same frequency.
I'm not certain. The ship is pretty damn popular.

Wait wait wait, if feminism and gay rights and stuff ISNT an SJW thing then what the hell are SJWs?

I go on tumblr all the time, follow a good mix of fandom and feminist stuff, and was under the impression that I WAS an SJW for trying to be more consciousness about all that stuff.

Eh, SJW is technically that, but it's a negative connotation put on it. Like White Knight.

You know what, it probably is. But I'll have you know it isn't as though I and the only one who would make that mistake given what it's describing and how it is phrased, coupled with the fact that this is the internet, it's not as though information spreads uniformly or is accurate.

So having preferences is being a freak of nature? I'll keep that in mind the next time someone tells me they're into blonds or redheads.

Really? I have heard of Kim X Shego porn but I didn't think there was an actual shipping fandom for a show that ended years ago and wasn't super popular to begin with.
Oh yeah, the fandom for it is crazy. Also, not popular? I could sworn that it was pretty popular. It was popular enough to go on for a couple of extra seasons after it was supposed to end.

Not so much homophobia, but I have encountered male shippers that will call you a "fucking ******" for not liking their lesbian waifus, or daring to bring canon into their porn. From my experience, its less calls about homophobia, and more mocking your sexuality for not finding lesbians hot.

Kim Possible had a fairly sizeable adult fandom, probably a similar size to shows like Rescue Rangers, and Danny Phantom, they definately are all over the place on Deviantart anyway.

If I remember right, Kim X Shego was either the most popular or second most popular pairing, and I've seen a couple flame wars sprout up around the canon pairing with Kim and Ron.

Still, the worst shipping flamewars will always go to Avatar and Ranma 1/2, those shippers be crazy.

I can see the temptation to equivocate these things (I even compared it to kink in one of my posts), but surely you can realize, at least socially, the distinction between preferring a hair color and literally not experiencing any kind of sexual attraction to anyone unless you establish some kind of personal, emotional connection with them first.

Besides, we DO have terms for preferences. Especially in the gay-community. Anything-queen is and has been well accepted language for ages, bears, etc. So even if this was just an extension of that, it wouldn't be anything new.

It's a transitional phase. Those always come with bumps.

No the point I was trying to make is that the demi-sexual guy thought he was a freak of nature because was not interested in sex unless he was emotionally invested he until he realized that was ok. You never thought being interested in certain types of women was wrong, which is why there isn't a special term for it.

Yep; straight guys like yours truly don't pretend that there's anything socially acceptable about it, while the people who ship two canonically straight guys don't seem to understand why sex fantasies are a private thing, or why it's actually anti-gay to reduce them to fantasy objects.
or what if its the same thing but they express it in a different way? less emphasis on the graphic nature and more on the emotions and romance of the thing...I suspect why eroitca *may*? be more popular amonst women? I know when I look at women in that way I don't think I do it the way a straight guy does

interestingly I read an article on Autostraddle about why there wasn't more femslash in the fanfic comunity and could it be something to do with disdain for female charachters and our dismissal of female sexuality? I would have thourght its because it doesn't appeal to hetero women? but I don't know...wish I could link but I can't

it exists....both they "guy" type (see reddit rule 34 for examples) and the (faaaar less common) "girl" type though the former exists mostly in visual form...how many male femslash fanfic writers there are I wouldn't know

anyway I find it hard to condemn shipping when I do it all the time in my head (between female charachters)

I would also chalk part of it up to the sheer adundance of male dominated shows and properties. One of the things I've noticed is that slash shipping tends to take place in shows where the cast is either dominated by men or women. To see what this looks like in shows with female casts, the Sailor moon fandom had some fairly prominent groups of male writers shipping lesbian sailor scouts. Harem anime often gets this treatment too, although it's usually buried under straight ships with the single male protagonist.

The biggest example I can think of is actually the MLP fandom, where the number of male fanfic authors seems to be huge compared to most fandoms, and the gender ratio of the show means that lesbian shipping is pretty much the vast majority of shipping taking place. A lot of the male authors seem to have translated the habits and tropes of their female counterparts into the stories they write.

Oh my God, that's adorable.

Yeah, sorry folks, shipping happens everywhere at all times. If there are fans of something, and there will probably be a fan of just about everything, there is awful porn being written of it at this very moment. The only difference between tumblr's thing being considered hideous is that most porn is decidedly for the male gaze, and when you pitch it to appeal to the female gaze instead people get confused and their hackles get raised real quick. People like different things. That's okay. Sometimes fandoms get turned in on themselves and go really weird. That's... well, that's not okay, but it's far from a thing limited to just Tumblr. Literally the only difference is that Tumblr's communities tend to be skewed in gender ratio towards the feminine and apparently some people can't handle that. Fandom's always weird. Fandom will always be hella weird. We can talk about specific instances of fandom drama but let's be honest, if there is a fandom, and more than one and a half people are in it, there's going to be drama, and it is far, far, far, FAR, FAR, F A R from a tumblr-specific event. It's also slightly hilarious to me that Tumblr is 'the place' for gay shipping that is forced and unrealistic but anyone can spend half a second on /y/ and go "wait, REALLY?" at a piece of artwork before scrolling down the page.

Then again, I've seen some pretty despicable shipping between serial killers and their victims almost exclusively by female shippers. Also, I have yet to find anything that comes close to the popularity of the superwholock fandom in terms of dedication and frequency.
Superwholock fandom is a very...weird case (though the thing that comes close would probably be Homestuck). I'm not totally informed on how Superwholock works, but I know a lot of people insist that homosexual stuff is pretty natural to the source. That could just be so much projection, but again the Superwholock phenomenon is very...weird. It's basically its own discussion.

Can we please stop with all the threads asking if we can please stop with shit that doesn't remotely matter?

No one cares what the people who don't like Tumblr think about Tumblr because those people most likely don't use Tumblr.

I don't know what kind of perfect Disney world you people are hoping for that we will one day all live in perfect harmony and respect every single person's individual beliefs down to the most trivial minutiae but it's never gonna happen, and all you do by bringing these topics up over and over again is succeed in pouring more fuel on the flames and make it look like your painting yourselves as victims in an imaginary war that only you are having.

I use Tumblr for part of my art portfolio and I honestly don't give a shit what people think about it. It's just that easy.

I don't get forcing two characters of the same gender together if there is absolutely zero evidence to support such a pairing, especially if there is evidence for the exact opposite, it makes no sense to me. If there was evidence for such a pairing possibility, I don't have a problem with it - like implied Rei x Usagi in Sailor Moon (I will admit it's been a while since I've seen that so I could be remembering incorrectly). TBH, I find good gender flip stories to me much more interesting. Unless it's pure smut, seriously can't stand reading smut - often comes across as the authors personal wank material which makes it weird, and it's also eye rollingly bad in most cases.

You're not demisexual, you just don't have a highly active or over-active sex drive. Asexuality is an absolute, there are no degrees. You either are, or are not, you aren't partly. Your situation isn't anything special, it's a normal form which sexuality takes, but it very much is not in any way, shape or form asexuality.

That's one thing that continually annoys me, inventing terms for things that don't exist. Demisexuality is, by its own definition, something which is impossible.
Oh trust me, I have a very active sex drive.

And asexuality has nothing to do with demisexuality. When asked about it, the given definition for demisexuality may be something like "halfway between asexual and sexual" but that's for the sake of convenience.
Can I ask a question? This can apply to everyone else as well; who cares? You two are pretty much going back and forth on the finer points of how someone feels should be called. I'm projecting not going to lie, but I always wondered why can't we just drop all these labels. I feel like it's more productive to define someone on what they do personally. Or in other words, personally I don't care if your X or into Y, but if you parade it around like that's all your about I won't have much interest in getting to know ya.

On Topic: I don't feel a small portion of a group should define the whole lot. I'm pretty sure you guys don't like it when someone in the media thinks gamers are lazy violent losers who have no social skills and a drag on society as a whole. If you have a problem with that person then you have a problem with that person. Now if the goal of side group is to do something that is not right then that is different. But this Tumblr hate seems to stem from bad eggs, not as a core.

Now if you will excuse me I need to get a hedgehog to hold still so I can snap some photos.

[ Site format is buttugly and it uses that damnable endlessly scrolling newsfeed instead of pages to flip between.
Actually in your settings there is a way to change that so that you do have the individual pages to flip through

There's very little in the way of a NSFW filters and images are already opened and cannot be minimized on your dash, so try not to browse it in public.
There's extensions for it that will close all images and do a nsfw filter

but all that's stuff that either people tell you or you figure out on your own (though the first I figured out by looking at my settings)

OT: As a regular tumblr user (hey I have to have somewhere to put my random thoughts and my photography up at and to look at attractive people), you basically get into it what you put into it. If you follow a bunch of people in the SJ type of designation, that's what you're going to get. If you follow a bunch of people posting a lot about video games or half naked women or books that's what you're going to get. At least for the majority. I mean you have people like me who bounce from personal shit to books to movies to political shit to cool artwork to video games to music to slightly social justice type shit to cool weaponry to weaponry in general to random photos I take and just about everything in between (though if you look at my tumblr link in my profile that takes you to just my photography and the first few pages is mostly scenery from the last time I went hiking).

It's like people's definition of Americans or of certain religions. You have the very vocal minority who is usually ignorant as shit making that people's definition of what the whole country/religion is when really it's just a very vocal minority. But because it's the internet it gets pushed into this big huge thing (because nothing on the internet is not a big huge thing even when it is)so people extrapolate that because of this vocal minority everyone else has to be like that. Because logic?
