Thats mainly because the biggest problem up here is infrastructure. Most of these services are running off the backbone of another service. So when they get a major increase in traffic it affects their operating costs alot more than if they were using their own internet backbones, and its capabilities. In the states there is pretty much the same thing going on, but the fact that there are so many more companies doing it, makes prices competative. Up here its monopoly city.

Edit: As for it taking months to fix ... well thats just Rogers for ya.

Fuck Rogers. Seriously, fuck them. They're throttling people for using P2P? That should be fucking illegal. You pay for a service, sure as shit better provide it. I wonder if Shaw is doing the same thing? I can tell you I rarely see my "advertised" speeds, with our free Extreme High Speed upgrade thanks to my gf being a student.

Help! Help! I'm being opressed!

Yeah I agree. They really have no right to limit broadband usage that is being paid for.

You may not be aware, but in Canada P2P is completely legal. In fact, it's perfectly legal for us to download music and movies for personal use. Technically, it's also legal to download software - BUT - it's illegal to circumvent copyright protection, so using a software crack would be illegal.

Wait, didn't Marconi's tests take place in Newfoundland?
Yes, but those tests took place when Newfoundland was still an independent country, long before it became part of Canada.

Where I am the only options are $50+ for unlimited super fast cable internet, $35 for really really terrible DSL but unlimited internet. Or around $60.00 for really super fast speed but only about 10GB/Month. Considering I can use about 30GB+ in the space of a month I'm a bit stuck with either a really expensive option or a really bad though cheap option. Bleh~ It actually sounds like the capped internet prices in CA are BETTER than the capped internet prices in the states. The advantage in the states is that we ALSO have the unlimited option too depending on area. I really hope that doesn't change in the future...

Internet usage is proving to me something of a thorny issue in Canada; just last month the Canadian government vetoed a ruling by the CRTC that would have allowed fairly stringent usage-based internet charges after the public made its displeasure very clear. Canada is one of the few Western countries that doesn't offer broadband plans with unlimited data.
They'll also put you in prison for denying the holocaust, saying anything racist or various other thought crimes.

Yeah, thsi is among other internet issues we've been dealing with here lately. The CRTC is thankfully helping us out, but it's proving fairly difficult to stop the big ISP's from being the money grabbing bastards that they are.

(I'm paying about $50/month for ~1.5-2MB/s down and 60GB/month)
Is this common over on your side of the pond?

Seems very expensive for such a poor service.

I pay about $50(US) (although the US dollar is very weak at the moment) for 3MB/s down and no limit.

After all, what is the point of broadband if there is an arbitrary limit on it?
34E (which is, incidentally, roughly the same as 50US atm) for 12.5MB/s, no limit. You're getting royally screwed.

Edit: In fact, right now, my provider is having a campaign. 100MB/S for the next 6 months, for only 20E a month. After that, 40E a month.
Really, what the hell are you paying for?

No shit!? We're using Rogers here, but i haven't noticed anything, but then again, i did not get a chance to compare it with anyone around me that does not play the game. Our max bandwidth being 90GB and we get about 1.5MB/S down steady, with about 50KB/S up.

Yes it did. But after WW1 the government freaked outed and thought it could be used for acts of terrorism and signaling invasions so everyone who wanted to own a radio had to licence it through the government. All rather expensive.

Eh? Dude do you know that Canada is on the internet more than any other country? (presumably ranked by per capita)
I'm criticizing our past governments not the people.

only if you express those thoughts in a public space, which makes it speech crime, not thought crime.

so sure, Canada definitely does not give absolute priority to Free Speech quite as much as americans...

but then we don't put up with horseshit like the WBC either. I'm quite happy with that.

the problem is that there are only two major players in Canada's internet market and that lack of competition pretty much let's them do whatever the heck they want because they know people don't have any options.

One of the many reasons I'm a member of the Pirate Party. Only party who actually understands what throttling is, as opposed to just reading off the sheet the CRIA* gave them [http://www.speakoutoncopyright.ca/blog/liberal-mp-dan-mcteague-emerges-unofficial-cria-spokesperson].

(*"CRIA". Translation to American: RIAA. EMI, Sony, Universal, Warner, et al.)

You're Fucking nuts dude. "Speech crime"? I might not care for the WBC, but they have a right to say what they say. As long as it isn't something that poses immediate danger (like shouting "fire" in a crowded theater), you should be allowed to say it.

Where do you draw the line? What if the government decides that speaking out against its policies is a "speech crime"? Then you're pretty much fucked.
