Ashley Williams. Fuck that racist, christian, poetry loving ****. fuck everything about her.
She's one of the most popular Mass Effect romances and it baffals me just how many Mass Effect players aren't turned off by racism... or maybe it's xenophobia either way she's a religious bigot who quotes old poetry and that means I hate her.

Miranda Lawson. If there's one thing Bioware's good at it's characterizing the fuck out of people and when they try to make a ***** they go all the fucking way. So here you have this schizophrenic, spoiled brat, self centered ***** who has decided to be your self appointed second in command who does nothing but second guess and insult you when she's not shamelessly kissing your ass. And people like her... it...does not...compute...

Liara T'soni. not really though because I liked her in Mass Effect 1 and understood where she was coming from in Mass Effect 2, but then in ME 3 she completely shut down and wouldn't do anything. In general Mass Effect 3 is a poorly written mess but I didn't expect Liara to go all Ice Queen on me. Even in the playthrough where I didn't cheat on her she still cold shouldered me the entire game. That just got under my skin in a way that still bothers me even when all the other shit ME 3 pulled is slowly fading out of my memory.

Giovanna from Max Payne 3. You know if you think about it for a second she's the reason they caught Fabiana 'cause if she didn't run away in chapter 2 Passos could have chased down the helicopter and rescue them both. But that's not the extent of it, when you have to escort her in chapter 10 she wont stop screaming, or running around, or panicking, and then she just let's Passos fly off without you, what's up with that. I also hated Passos for much the same reasons. but instead of screaming and panicking he mostly just took my kills.

Luana from Record of Agarest War. I don't know if people love her (or if anyone's ever even heard of Record of Agarest War) but she is one of the love interests and she's just insufferable. The only thing that matters to her, and that she thinks should matter to anyone else is how "perfect" she is.(If you can imagine me saying that in a high pitched fluttery voice with an undertone of utter disgust then you're right on) All she wants is for a knight in shining armor to sweep her off her feet because she can cook and clean and is selfless and altruistic and utterly transparent because you don't pick up on any of that stuff sub-textually. She blatantly tells you all this crap! And so matter-of-fact-ly! I never get the sense that she likes you it's like you fit her story book definition of "lover" so she just treats you like you're already head over heals for her and it makes me sick.

Mostly I can't bring my self to hate poorly written characters or boring characters.
Like Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, Lightning, any of the COD protagonists (I assume people like them?) but there is one bad character who people like a lot who I despise.

Dom... Fuckin' Dom. That wife murdering ************. So he goes through all this effort to save her and when it seems that saving her might take some effort other than shooting aliens in the face, he shoots her in the head. WHAT THE FUCK? That's proof that this guy doesn't know how (or want to try) to do anything other that kill stuff. And yet he's supposed to be the relatable one of the bunch. Fuck you Epic Games.

No no, I do. But I thought this was about characters we hated? I'm not one for silent protagonists and Link really irks me. I thought that was allowed? haha :p

Bella fucking Swan.

Enough said.
I think you misunderstood: it's supposed to be characters everybody else likes.

Nobody loves her. Seriously... nobody.
With as popular as Twiligh is, you are really going to tell me she's not a liked character by a sizable portion of the population?

I gather that you hate Ashley Williams.

Though I don't understand why her being Christian has anything to do with it. If she were Buddhist would she have been more likable?
I thought her being religious was interesting given that she lives in a universe where Humanity is clearly not the only species out there. And yet she still retains her faith. You don't see that in a lot of sci fi. It was refreshing.

Just once, can't we have an "X you love that everyone else hates" thread? Just once? No? We have to keep up the endless cycle of negativity here on The Escapist? Sheesh, I'm surprised Game Grumps isn't hosted here.

Let me see... how about Link? There we go.

OT:

Maybe Master Chief, I made a thread about how he is holding the Halo franchise back and a surprising amount of people defended him.

Rei Ayanami from Evangelion.

People like her because of the amount of "mystery" surrounding her. Here, let me solve the mystery for you; she's a 2x4 who is a clone of Shinji's mother and Gendo's sex doll.

Cyclops is off his fing rocker now. He's got the phoenix split solely between himself and Emma and is forcing world peace, free will be damned. I think anyone that liked him before learned to hate him when he became dictator of his own island nation, cuz putting all the mutants on an island worked so well the last time =/ I can't wait for the Avengers to find a stick big enough to poke him with. Oh, Wanda!

i fucking hate this guy he is just a jerk! (espacially lately) and somehow he is popular enogh to have survived in a major role for around 50 years!
Cyclops is a real asshole...so is Reed Richards but he doesn't have as many fans.

While I don't hate Mario, I strongly prefer using Luigi in the games wherein that is an option.

I really don't think there are very many Twilight fans who love Bella as a character. She's designed to be a personality deficient blank slate for the reader to project on, so any feelings they have towards the story position Bella fills are really meant for them self. So they probably resent Bella more than anything else.

And anyone who actually pays attention to her actions throughout the story can hate her for better reasons...

I don't know for sure, but she's a tool for the reader not really a character, and when she does actually become a character she's not exactly likable. So I don't think that very many Twilight fans love her or even care that she exists. But I don't know many Twilight fans so I could be talking out my ass. (that begs the question if they're really that dumb, but then I remember they're fans of something so poorly written and it doesn't seem so implausible)

Edward and Jacob, now people love them. Not Bella

If she was Buddhist she would be infinitely more likeable (Than zero...)
The Bible has this one line that goes something like "God made man in his own image." Or something I'm no Bible scholar. Then what? God made Turians in someone else's image? and before that God made Protheans but he was drinking that night so he accidentally gave them 4 eyes... The existence of aliens debunks the christian religion. So she's ignorant of the definition of the thing she has put her faith in. (You know like all Christians who fight to ban gay marriage but ware short pants and shave their face on a regular basis.)

At least undisputed proof that aliens exist wouldn't make Buddhism obsolete. So it is specifically the fact that she's Christian and not just that she's religious

I find Arya Stark just really annoying in GoT

I don't know why, she just doesn't click well with me

my Naoto rant was here, but too long to quote AGAIN<snip?
You really think Naoto is the worse character in P4? Wow that's a shock, Rise and Yukiko are a hell of a lot worse. Rise is practically useless and is pretty much just eye candy cahtting up the MC whenever she can and Yukiko is just so boring and really doesn't add much to the story, even her shadow wasn't that interesting.
Yeah, um, point of this thread and all. Everyone else loves her, I think she's a derailing pain in the ass. Deal.

(Also her gender dysphoria is handled so incredibly poorly and the culmination of her romance path is just revolting and insulting to the point that it infects my entire view of her.)

Dude, I LIKE Rise and her bubbly shield against all her issues, and Yukiko may be subtle but her character arc is really fascination, so boo to you.

Catelyn Stark. Know-it-all busybody caused more trouble than she was worth.
I agree. Hale's voice overs annoy the ever living shit out of me.

As for characters, Thane from ME2 really pisses me off. IDK what it is, he just irks me. Jack is a complete ***** and every time I play ME2 i try to kill her.

This might be harder than I thought. Or not. Let's see...

Someone mentioned Kamina from Gurren Lagaan, and I'm gonna have to agree, though "hate" might be too strong. I just don't like him that much. I've only seen the first three episodes of the show, but in each one, he boasts about how awesome and outstanding he is and then promptly fails while Simon does the dirty work. He can't seem to back up his confidence. :/

Quagmire from Family Guy. Used to be kinda funny, I guess, but the newer serious side of him just makes me sick to watch. I don't know if it's the voice or the whole "OOPS! We forgot to give Quagmire his own reality beyond sex and piloting for seven seasons! To the drawing board" attitude they're taking to build him up now, but whenever he's on-screen now, it just makes me uncomfortable.

Hank Hill, but it might just be because it got to a point where Hank was portrayed as the paragon of what's right on King of the Hill. I feel like there are too many episodes where he has to fix things in the end.

Since Wolverine seems like he cannot die, and due to overexposure, he becomes less and less interesting to me. Kind of would rather see some other mutants take the spotlight occasionally. Like Xavier. Or Mystique. Or even Rogue. Or Nightcrawler (but I don't know much about what he's like in comics; I usually think of the one from X-Men Evolution :/ )

Apollo Justice from Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Problem 1 is that he has next to none of the charisma Phoenix Wright had. Problem 2 is that we hardly know anything about the guy even though we WERE HIM FOR ABOUT 15 HOURS OF THE STORY. Most of the cases revolve around Phoenix Wright to such a degree that this game might as well have been called "Phoenix Wright: Above the Law" or something. Problem 3 is that he barely does anything to move the cases along. Most of his actions are guided by Phoenix and Trucy. I wanna play this game as Trucy, goddammit!

Sonic the Hedgehog. Again, not necessarily "hate", just "not like as much". He's the "too cool for school" guy, the one that might've been cool back in his hayday but would probably be bagging groceries while shouting 90s surfer talk now. That guy's annoying. Personally, I prefer Tails, he's almost as fast as Sonic anyway, and he can fly. And fix and drive planes. Nice. :)

And now, for probably the one that's going to get me lynched, and let me preface this by saying that I don't necessarily hate this character, but I don't really like him as much as other fans of this show seem to...

Bolin from Legend of Korra. Yeah, he's funny, but there really isn't much to him beyond that. Bolin is funny, he crushed on Korra for a little while, he's an Earthbender... that's about it. He's not that smart, he's not a very noteworthy Earthbender, and he's currently got the depth of a 7oz plastic cup. Asami at least has the fascination with cars, the daddy issues, involvement in a love triangle... Maybe the next season can figure out what to do with him because I probably could like him if there was something more there (if the next season itself figures out what it wants to do after that disaster of an ending).

That's about all I've got for now. Maybe there are more that I'm missing...

I've been trying to decide on it, but I can't think of anyone.

No character has really provoked the reaction of hatred or dislike in me.

Not even characters most people find annoying.
