Hmmm...
Thank you, Graustein! It NEVER fails to amaze me how little some people know about huge historical events. Some Americans like to rag on about censorship in Australia and China, and yet that can look so ironic when they start spouting propaganda and Fox News quotes in place of history and politics.

Socialism is still a terrible system. Any country in which the government has that much power will inevitable have something go wrong, probably involving peoples individual rights being violated for the supposed "good" of the many.
Wow... so, since Fox News is probably your source of info on politics, could you tell me what Socialism actually is? Which countries are actually socialist?

Did you know that the picture you were referring to has only Communist and Fascist representatives on it? And that those two political systems aren't socialist? No? What, prey, would be a good system of government? One where the government doesn't look after its people, serving mainly to ensure business have free reign to exploit the populace to the max? Without any socialist aspects, that's pretty much what you'd get.

The UK's NHS is a socialist system of free healthcare, paid for by the masses through taxes. Because of opinions like yours, Clockwork, the US has, for some reason, demonised this idea as some sort of public sponsored murder racket ("If Steven Hawking was British, he would have been killed", shouted your headlines. How fucking stupid can you get?). Now, does that make your system or the socialist system a 'terrible' one?

I reckon "being told the truth" should be made a human right.
Wicky, forgive me for intruding, but I think you have some serious issues with Americans. Our country doesn't spew propaganda, and most of us hate Fox news. You must understand, since socialism had such a rocky past there are bound to be some criticizers. I personally, am very Liberal, I think that the government should be and is our friend, but others just don't see it that way.

While I am not happy that Avatar was banned, A Confucious biopic starring Chow-Yun-Fat actually interests me. That being said, "Go Chinese underground for still distributing pirated copies!"

You know how you can tell if someone is feeling guilty because they know what they are doing is wrong?

When they can watch a movie and immediately recognize it as an allegory for THEIR actions.

It's like watching American History X and suddenly realizing that beating up negroes makes you look like an ass.

The Soviet Union was and China is a communist state. The Third Reich was a fascist state, which is even further away from socialism. Communism is not the same as socialism, like fascism is not the same as liberalism (or capitalism).

Jeez. Why does everyone always think socialism equals communism, and therefore equals a dictatorial state? Socialism simply means the stronger in a nation support the weaker. Communism is when there are no stronger and weaker, and everyone is forced to live on the same level (with the exception of the state leaders, which actually kinda opposes the idea of communism). IMO, there's a pretty big difference.

You should know that at that time, Hitler's party was called NSDAP for a reason
(National Socialist German Workers Party) DUH!
There's a difference between naming your party Socalist and actually being Socialist. Hitler was the former. His party was far from Socialist, the opposite actually.

To use your own words: DUH!

it's pointless to argue anymore... this post started like 4 days ago.

btw: when you help the lower class, that doesn't necesarily makes you Socialist.

this pic is a good example:

Hitler was not a socialist he was a national socialist, which are completely opposing ideologies

Stalin was so far off-base from communism (he was never a socialist) that his ideology is now called Stalinism so communists don't have to associate that evil man with their cause

Mao was a Stalinist- not a socialist.

Whoever made this image knows nothing about politics. If I met the original author of this image, I don't know what I would do to him for his slander against an ideology based on equality and pure democracy. Its very possible that the police would get involved.

OT:

Does anyone not remember that America did the same thing that China does. We called it immenent domain. We forced families who had lived in their homes for generations to sell their houses at a devalued price so that we could give more property to companies. At least China, as a developing power, has some excuse for this. America as an established power has none whatsoever. We just didn't have to ban any movies because we have already figured out that if we throw an image of a celebrity on drugs on our news stations- everyone forgets about real issues.

I know it's wrong to generalise and for that I apologise thought I was careful to say 'some', and I aimed to respond specifically to the people I was quoting. Well, I slipped up at the end, but hey, that wasn't my intention. I know my rant doesn't apply many Americans, but the vocal few who make their mis-guided, propaganda-driven opinions known on forums when topics like these come up really grate me the wrong way.

I'm going to Chicago in a couple of months (yay for draconian flight laws!), so I'll get to meet some Americans other than your stereo-typical Texan holiday maker (weigh in at two cows a piece, nice but HORRIFICALLY right wing in absolutely every way possible). I'm particularly interested to see the difference in media - just one of those cultural difference stereotypes I want to check for myself.

I don't hate Americans, I hate their stereotypes, particularly when I see them reinforced in real life. No offence to those who don't follow the stereotype, just as I don't take offence when ignorant Americans lay into British stereotype of the month.

In other news, China has also banned computers, thoughts, and toilet paper. Because it can.
Funny you should day that. There never is any toilet paper in Chinese public restrooms, though the holder is always there.

Heh, China should ratify a law called "Eminent Domain". That way they have a legal way to force people out of areas they want for Commercial gain. They'd also be a bit more like the US when they want to force people out of an area they are living in.

It's not "Oh well, their loss", it's not like it was their decision. It was the decision of a few power mad idiots, prepared to ban anything that might encourage the Chinese people to think about their government in a less than positive way.

Oh well.

I've already seen Avatar 3 times. I kinda want to see it once more. Just because I know I'll never have an experience like that again once it's out of theaters.

Right, personally China represents a massive problem politically for me. A country that has the power to do virtually whatever it wants due to the abundance of cheap and extortionate labour, preventing any country challenging its actions for fear of economic repercussions.

This is hardly the worst thing they have done or will do, incidentally I love that Google has delivered China an ultimatum, however it will impede further freedom of information in China despite being censored. But it's good to see a corporation standing up to China.

It's a bit much to suggest that they are the only people capable with identifying with the Na'vi. Hopefully though there will come a day when censorship will be abolished in China, I can't see that day being soon though.

Avatar is awesome incidentally.

What I enjoy about this story is that previously I wouldnt have made the comparison. However with the ban and the given reason it gives you a reason to pause and think "wow these guys really are dicks"

Yeah! I saw a trailer for that a while ago and it looked like a good film. And it has Chow in it, who is the only movie bad-ass I can think of that hasn't starred in any family crap.

Off-Topic: Jackie Chan must die.

Have you forgotten he was in Dragon Ball: Evolution? It may not have been a family film, but it was crap. That is to say I don't blame the guy for being in it. The movie was a failure from the start.
