An interesting bit of news. While I suppose it is mildly disturbing that we don't have the record at the moment, The US has been showing an odd lack of willpower when it comes to staying on top. Or at least staying on top in a fashion that the rest of the world can clearly see, like in terms of computer races.
That said, do a search for "China" "Satellite" and "Lasers" and you'll get some articles going back as far as like 2006 about Chinese Technology we haven't answered in any meaningful fashion. Look up the "Yuan Class Submarine", or for those who are concerned about domestic rights "Chinese Mobile Execution Chambers" or simply "Chinese Death Vans".
I've posted links to all of those things before. What's frightening is that our mainstream media seems to be entirely missing these things (from both parties), not to mention all of the saber rattling China has been doing about wanting to embrace it's destiny by taking over the world, or simply conquer other countries for living space.
Today if you ask most people about China they will tell you that China has a huge army but is not a threat because it can't project that power, and we could nuke them out of existance in 15 seconds. Well China has been building up it's navy, and the ships it would need to escort it effectively carrying troops (like those subs) and their anti-satellite lasers which can blind our satellites make it so that while we could probably still beat them with WMD today if we ever had the guts to use them, I'm not entirely sure if that will remain the case.
Of course this is all barring any innovations our own goverment might have that aren't being revealed to the public, however given our general tendency to talk about our technology and the contreversy surrounding things like our anti-missle/anti-ICBM systems that has Russia getting all upset about treaty violations, I'm not quite sure if I want to put my faith in X-weapons, especially given the politics involving our military nowadays.
A lot of rambling, but the bottom line here is that I'm a little surprised we haven't seen more of a response under the circumstances.
Still, despite my concerns about them and their objectives, Kudos to China for making an awesome computer. I fully admit to jealousy on this one.
