Christopher Nolan Back for Third Batman Film

The director of The Dark Knight [http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Begins-Blu-ray-Christian-Bale/dp/B000PC6A3E/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285794647&sr=8-1] has finally confirmed that he will direct a third Batman movie.

It's been the source of rumor and speculation ever since The Dark Knight was released, and after Nolan's success with this summer's Inception [http://www.amazon.com/Inception-Blu-ray-Leonardo-DiCaprio/dp/B002ZG981E/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285794683&sr=8-1], it was never a sure deal. But Nolan has decided that he will not follow in the footsteps of Batman directors before him, namely Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher, by bowing out after two films. There is no word on what the third Batman film will be about or what villain will take center stage, but at least we know that the series is still in good hands.

Of course, getting him to confirm it took some doing from the interviewer at Empire. "It's becoming inevitable, I'll put it that way," says Nolan. "I feel myself falling into it, I guess. And getting it all figured out and I'm pretty excited about what we're doing so. If I haven't announced it, I think that people probably all know at this point that I'm doing it."

So, what? Can we say that you are you doing it or not?

"I think you can at this point, yes."

Ok, good. Whew.

Nolan also hinted that he is working on the script now with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, who wrote the screenplay for the Dark Knight, as well as the short story that was the basis of Nolan's first film, Memento [http://www.amazon.com/Memento-Guy-Pearce/dp/B00003CXZ4/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285794703&sr=8-1].

With Warner Bros. announcing a 2012 release date back in May, it finally seems like a third Batman might actually happen. Now it just has to compete for our attention with Avengers, Thor, Nolan's own Superman: Man of Steel, Green Lantern, Antman, Green Hornet, Spiderman, Deadpool, X-Men: First Class, R.E.D. ...

I think it's going to fail. I don't expect anyone to top Heath Ledger's performance, and I doubt the third can survive without such strong star power.

Who the hell are they gonna make the villain in a 3rd batman movie, I dont think Mr.Freeze and the Penguin will catch the eyes as much as the Joker did

At the very least, the cinematography will be good. At this point, I really doubt anyone can top the Joker. I mean, he is essentially Batman's greatest enemy, and he got handled in The Dark Knight. Anyone beyond that is most likely going to be underwhelming.

Also, for the love of God, Mr. Nolan, get Mr. Bale to stop the damned growling. Please.

well i have mixed feelings about this announcement. The dark knight will be hard to top with heath's performance as the joker. now i wonder if there are any truth to the rumors that the villian will be the riddler played by johnny depp

Hell yeah!

The Dark Knight remains possibly my favourite film of all time.

Whether it will live up to the standards of TDK remains to be seen though. Still, Batman is awesome so (Y)

That wouldn't be bad.

YAY!

Best news all day, I just rewatched Begins last weekend, a 3rd one will definitely be kick-ass. They might have a problem trying to make the movie as awesome as the Dark Knight though, I'm hoping they can bring it through. I'm expecting great things from this...

Damn, a lot of super hero movies coming out, huh?
Batman isn't a superhero.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of (super)hero films rolling out in the next couple of years. I'd imagine that they'd take a break after the avengers though. They've been mostly Marvel films after all.

OT: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

I can't wait. It's going to be awesome.

Although I don't understand why anyone would think it's going to "fail," even relative to TDK. Sure, Ledger was a fine actor, but he embodies the Joker, not "every possible villain in the live-action Batman universe." There are plenty of equally excellent actors available and plenty of material to dig through, SOMETHING from both departments is inevitably going to line up.

I figured he would come back. Now he just has to make a movie that's even better than the dark knight or the fanboys will tear him to shreds.
No sweat.

I love this revelation but I do hope there is a new and smaller Batmobile. Don't get me wrong, I love the Tumbler as a batmobile but it just doesn't seem like something to stick with. Especially with the notoriety that Bats is going to be trying to shed coming in this next story.

Anyone else excited for the Avengers film?
I'm keeping my enthusiasm down but I feel confident it will at least be a fun watch. E-specially with the chance of Chris Evans sharing the screen with Robert Downey, Jr, in polar opposite roles. Thinking about that gives me the shivers. Don't know Chris Evans? Just watch the first Fantastic Four and the Losers. Then you can see what kind of Steve Rogers we are in for.
This may just help bring Civil War to the big screen. Hero vs Hero.

This is most grand news.

I agree but I hope that it will be just as good.
Continuing the franchise shouldn't have to diminish the work that has been done so far. I still enjoy Batman Begins just as much even after the spectacular effort put into Dark Knight. What will make the formula work is that there is every effort made not to emulate what was done in Dark Knight, but letting the story work on its own and whatever new performers that come in are not expected to be another Heath Ledger. That's one thing that let Batman Returns work: Danny Devito wasn't expected to outperform or emulate Jack Nicholson(number 3 Joker in my book, Mark Hamill being number 2), therefore allowing him to make a very memorable Penguin.
I, for one, think it is high time a certain catburglar(and I mean catburglar, not a neurotic 9 to 5 catlady) came on the scene. We can save the short umbrella collector for number four.

Well he actually specifically said those two weren't possible as they couldn't be taken seriously :p

The rumours are it is the riddler, which they could do some really interesting stuff with.
