And the person in question actually meant something else entirely:

No I'm not talking about Paedophiles I'm talking about Petifiles, The people who are medically trained in France to deal with women's feet and foot care. Idiot.
... Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Now, as per Twilight, I think the others have taken care of this question. I especially liked the theory about sexual insecurity.

Edit:

Wasn't it all just her wet dream in book form?
This is pretty much why I hate it. I mean, at least Rowling created some less-than-archetype characters, and the story itself has some interesting spins on it...

I know, I was just having a laugh at the expense of someone trying to come off as superior and failing.

Personally, I think Twilight is "meh". It's not the best waste of an hour and a half, but it could be worse.

Ah, my apologies.

Yeh, and I really don't like Twilight... Edward needs a good slap, and probably some vampire lessons from Alucard... and then, maybe, maybe, he can become a regular (read: badass) vampire.

I haven't watched the movie, doubt i'll try either.
But i can say one thing.
90% of all late teen girls in the world who have ever heard of vampires will leave snail trails
when they see a good preformed one.
For example. I play the game World of Warcraft (yeah, sue me.) And i'm a dedicated role-player. (Sue me even more.)
Now here's the drill, i've played many different characters, and there's one that never ceases to amaze me. I can play a muscular beast of a man and walk around silvermoon and the female role players wouldn't give a crap. But the -second- i swap to a vampire character that happens to be a rogue. i can't walk anywhere without getting assaulted by horny teenage roleplayers so i have to remain in stealth 80% of my gameplay.

So to conclude:
Vampires are women's tall dark masked man that nibbles their neck and seduces them in the shadows.
'nuff said.

If I were to take a stab at Twilight's appeal it would be: "My boyfriend is special, my love is special, I am special. We're both beautiful AND special. Things try to keep us apart, but we're too SPECIAL."

For what it's worth, me and my sister MST3k'd our way through the movie and as such enjoyed ourselves despite the film.

Oh, did that one vampire in the kitchen scene have an expression like he was wearing nipple clamps under his blue shirt? I thought so...

Not surprising, since vampires are quite sexualised mythical creatures... hell, a 'biting a woman's neck'? Love bite much?

This is my opinion but if you want to make a good vampire movie find someone who is intimate with whitewolfs: the masquerade series! Not only will you have a well of information, you can actually make a real good plot with a half decent story teller, deck it out with balanced characters that fill a wide range of character types instead of being cardboard cut out vampires and have the means to introduce all sorts of other mythical creatures. Just don't try to cram everything into a single movie though, I hate when someone takes a good world and tries to highlight everything, it always ends up feeling jumpy and broken!

Blah de blah de blah.... And, OP, that's why most of them love Twilight.
Hmm, I was wondering when this viewpoint would deign to rear its ugly head. Frankly I was expecting it much sooner, although perhaps no one thought to bring it up because it was the product of inherently flawed reasoning.

Edward is a male who ignores his own animalistic urges (whether sexual or vampiric), and places Bella's safety, happiness, wants, needs, above his own, and asks nothing in return. But see, that's not really love now, is it? A successful, healthy relationship is about give and take. 50/50. You talk about Edward's sacrifices proving his love, but what does she do for him in return? Nothing. So either Bella doesn't love Edward, or your definition of "love" is in need of refinement.

See, what women want is this: they want a handsome, non-threatening man who will unconditionally love them no matter what they look like, and do whatever they ask without being expected to make any sacrifices in return. At least that's the message that Twilight sends, which I am becoming increasingly inclined to agree with considering its popularity. In practice though, its not drastically different from what men conceptually want in a woman.*

-Dread_Reaper

*Now I know some of you jerk offs are going to argue that you specifically want something different, or your relationship is different, yakety yakety yak, but understand I'm speaking in base concepts here, so don't bother to argue with me over trivialities.

P.S. And by the way, sexually secure people generally WANT to have sex, whether they're male or female. Its human nature. I don't completely agree with the OP on this point but I think you're being unnecessarily harsh calling him ignorant.

Something every gamer can relate to: Zombies.

Basic concept: Zombies are undead creatures that feast on human blood and attack in a violent manner; if you are bitten, you are turned.

Left 4 Dead: No Explanation. Sh** happens.
Resident Evil: Unleashed Virus by an Underground Organization, and later on, leeches infesting the brains.
Original Zombies: Slow.
Zombies in games like Resident Evil: Fast.

Some Zombies in games/movies learn; others don't. Some are slow, some are fast. Infection type varies. But at the end of the day: They are still a -fictional- type of entity, much like a Vampire. In which case you cannot pin a specific set of characteristics to it. That, my fellow games, is fact.
True, but in all of these things, they slightly changed the zombie. They made tweaks, and differences to make them unique to themselves. However, they kept to the core of the zombie. Likes human flesh, pump enough ammo into them, or destroy their brain they die. But my problem is that Twilight changed them at the core. Mainly the whole sunlight thing. It's changing them to something they aren't. What if zombies became humans, meaning they died with one bullet shot, or a stab or whatever. And the vampires eating animal blood instead of humans. Same thing. if zombies didn't eat humans, they eat sheep and cows, they lose that horror apeal and pretty much what they are. The thing that makes them scary is the cannibalistic side. If they didn't kill humans, they'd be just like other animals, killing for food.
Actually I think they did completely change the whole Zombie mythology, cos it originally came from Voodoo the 'zombi' or something. I think I heard (and have just found on wiki) that they actually used to make Zombies out of living people by giving them some sort of weird Neurotoxic drink that sent the unfortunate person into a deathlike hypnotic trance... I think I saw some horrible wasp on the discovery channel that does something similar to roaches -- turns them into a living zombie host for its parasitic children that eventually eat it alive in an alien style manner. Nature is gross...

That we do good sir, that we do.

What a film that will be, failing that, the porn spin-off will be good.

It all looked like inane drivel to me when I attempted to read the book, I couldn't get past the first chapter, its just someones attempt to do Harry Potter with vampires and they failed horribly. (i am a girl by the way)

You talk about Edward's sacrifices proving his love, but what does she do for him in return? Nothing. So either Bella doesn't love Edward, or your definition of "love" is in need of refinement.
Here is what Bella gives Edward in return:
1. She's hot and interested - that would be enough for any guy to at least start a relationship.
2. She's smart - She knows her bio, and keeps good conversation.
3. Most importantly, she accepts him. After 100 years of hiding from humans for fear of being chased out of town, this hot, smart chick doesn't mind that you're a blood-sucking freak and risks her own safety because she trusts you to control yourself. Bella's open-mindedness and courage to do anything for love are what motivates Edward to love her as well.

Back in the day, men understood that it was on them to give more in a relationship anyway. It's old-fashioned chivalry, gents.

Oh, and my harshness toward Alex comes from life-experience, but that's for another thread. Depending on how old you guys are, you might learn someday that some things aren't worth the risk.

My major problem with twilight is actually the writing. Anyone else think it's written just ghastly, like a Grade 10 fan fiction?
I have to agree with you there. The flow is horrible.

I don't know any women above the age of 16 who like this franchise, so is it really that bad? Or is it just another little girl thing that they'll probably grow out of?

back in the old days men clubbed women with jawbones and skull dragged them into caves whenever we wanted sex! hows that for chivalry?
