Clarification needed: Why do women LOVE Twilight?

As a woman who read the first book with an open mind... I have to say I hated it. I wanted to like it, I like vampire books, but it was badly written and I couldn't find anything redeeming in it. The characters are shallow and she changes her 'magic system' for plot later in the series, which is a literary no-no in my world.
The best part of the book is the end where she nearly dies, it was the only time the story engaged me, I wanted the vapid idiot to die. He's a violent stalker and she's a suicidal martyr, great archetypes to write about.
I didn't see the movie, since I refuse to spend money on it.
To honestly answer the question, I suppose it's because women like reading about romance, it's all about unrequited love. Wanting what you can't have.

Here is what Bella gives Edward in return:
1. She's hot and interested - that would be enough for any guy to at least start a relationship.
2. She's smart - She knows her bio, and keeps good conversation.
3. Most importantly, she accepts him. After 100 years of hiding from humans for fear of being chased out of town, this hot, smart chick doesn't mind that you're a blood-sucking freak and risks her own safety because she trusts you to control yourself. Bella's open-mindedness and courage to do anything for love are what motivates Edward to love her as well.

Back in the day, men understood that it was on them to give more in a relationship anyway. It's old-fashioned chivalry, gents.

Oh, and my harshness toward Alex comes from life-experience, but that's for another thread. Depending on how old you guys are, you might learn someday that some things aren't worth the risk.
I'd tell you to go make me a turkey and cheese on white, woman, but that might be TOO old-fashioned for you.

I'll tell you what, let's all bash the movie huh? When the fuck have movies made from novels ever been decent? Some of the best books I've read have been cinemised, which is usually followed by cries of "OMGZ!!11! DIS IZ SHITTT!" (A recent example- The Golden Compass. Or as it's properly called- The Northern Lights). Yeah, the movie is shit. So read the books, then make your mind up.

I'm a guy, I've read the first 3 books (borrowing the fourth soon) and they're actually *not that bad*. Ok, I also can't see why Edward gets hyped up so much- the guy's a douche half the time, but hey.
...text.
Now I'm interested, when I finish 'the picture of Dorian Gray' I'll go and see wether they have it at my local bookstore.

i have no idea why people find these books so compelling. i havn't read any of them, or seen the film, but my sister, my mum and a family friend have done both, and they love them to death, they'd probably be buried/cremated with the books and/or the DVD.

i saw the trailer and just said "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" the whole thing looked wooden, and plain. nothing exciting.
maybe it's because it's all supposed to be about women in this age or something i dunno. i just think the whole thing is dross

I am a chick...I've read the book...I think it blows dogs for quarters. Wasted hours of my life that I'll never get back. It's not the worst thing I've ever read, but I really don't get what all the hype is about!

You're right, back in the day men understood they had to give more in a relationship.

Of course, back then women couldn't vote either.

This expectation, this double standard, killed chivalry, and women are solely to blame for it. See, you can't just have equal treatment whenever its most convenient for you. You want equal rights, you better be prepared for equal responsibility, including in a relationship. If you don't want to be responsible for making the same sacrifices in a relationship that a man would, then put your petticoat back on and get back in the kitchen.

Don't lecture me about chivalry. I have given everything I have for a woman and received nothing in return, and I did it with a smile on my face. I know better than most about personal sacrifice for love, so don't treat me like some ignorant child.

A better question is, why do all twilight fan-girls love Germany so much? Not saying Germany is bad, its an okay country, but hasn't done me much lately.
But, when Germany does something... Damn they really go to town on it.

Can't we just assume that the Twilight books have secret messages hidden in them making tweenage girls obsess over them? The movie's probably got something backmasked in the intro, too.

To be honest, I always just viewed the series as a drastically inferior interpretation of the 'Romeo and Juliet' style romance. You know, two people, starkly contrasting families, fall in love, but they shouldn't be with each other. That kinda thing!

I hate it because it contrdicts basic biology and vampire cliches.
But the real reason is the fans. Maybe I would have read the book. I might have even liked it. But the fans completely changed my mind. I cannot stand their little cult Edward worship groups.
I agree. I think I wouldn't be SO opposed to it if it weren't for the fans. I might be a little less hateful towards it if people didn't over-obsess over it.

Also, you're right. For some reason, a good majority of women like jackasses. I guess it's psychological.

Okay, well I am a straight teenage boy and I am currnetly about half-way through the book, and to be honest I'm really liking it; Most probably because I am not one of those retards that can't function when they don't have ten gallons of blood flying up their nostrils. Okay so it has its flaws, it's slow paced, some of the characters would be more memorable if they were replaced by a lump of bricks with down-syndrome, but overall it's not bad. But all these girls talking about Edward being the perfect guy is really a load of bullshit. As far as I can tell he's actually a ****. Sure all of his smarmy comments are clouded by cryptic messages but but put a cardboard cutout of a cake in front of a turd, it's still a turd, a very chewy turd but a turd nontheless. But for all it's flaws it still manages to draw me in until I feel like I'm a teenage girl with a hundred year old pervet trying awkwardly to molest me...And by that I mean it's immersive I'm not sick or anything. But I guess everyone here is probably refering to the movie which I haven't seen in fear that the "Perfect guy" everyone's wet their panties over is portaryed as anyone else but Chuck Norris.

I'm a dude. Though I can see how you might've made that assumption.
