How many computers have you lost to viruses? And if your current computer has any, how many and what kind?

.....Where did you get the viruses?

ALSO: Cookie for the reference.

I've lost no computers, and I've yet to even get a virus.

Yes. My old Windows '98. I miss that thing, it was loaned to my Dad's work and someone decided to look up porn on it. Thanks to our good friend, Norton Antivirus, we were able to save the computer, however.

Oh wait, just kidding, Norton never fucking works. Sorry, folks! Looks like another computer bites the dust.

and now I can't play Need for Speed : High Stakes anymore. :(

I had the nickname "Pathogen Boy" for awhile growing up, but I never killed a computer.

My older brother made his laptop a terminal ICU patient though. Found a REALLY nasty virus that worked so fast he actually got to watch his computer shit itself in real time.

Don't download pirated copies of Photoshop was the moral of the story there, by the way. His computer is still infected, but it's slowly getting better thanks to a highly experienced computer guy.

He almost killed the home comp by proxy, as he'd left a flash drive laying around that got plugged into a comp for a file transfer a couple months after his computer swallowed the bomb. Turns out it had been plugged into his comp at the time. Virus scanner caught it and fought it back (well, several virus scanners in concert), but the flashdrive was deemed 'horrifically plagued' and for shits and giggles, was left in a public bathroom on the ledge of a sink.

Don't remember what it was called but it was crazy bad virus.

Can you actually 'lose' a computer to a virus?
Just reformat it. Its a pain, and if you don't have backups you'll lose your data, but you don't lose your computer.

I always keep backup of all my important and semi-important stuff, so I'm basically all ready to reformat as soon as I see a virus in the horizon.

Yeah, I gotten a lot of viruses over the years, but none that couldn't be dealt with.

Oh one other thing ... I've actually found that sometimes viruses are 'benign' but if your anti-virus detects it, its actually the anti-virus that blocks all your programs and messes up your computer; not the virus itself. Thats when I stopped using Norton.

However, if you wish to protect your chicken from Dokken, it's perfect:

None, because I am the son of a computer programmer, and have been doing computer work since I was in diapers back in the 80s.

If a HD partition is killed because of a windows virus, I just eat that partition into a Linux based OS and then repartition and reinstall windows.

Just never keep anything important solely on a single windows partition, where you could lose everything at once. Keep some form of backup, and a good up to date antivirus software such as AVG free, Avira, or Avast.

My old computer died 3 times before I upgraded to my super-awesome-computer-of-doom. My dad had to "Frankenstein" my computer so that it could run, but it never could do much after the first time it died. After the 3rd, it couldn't even play minesweeper. Seriously, it couldn't.

And also, where the hell do you THINK I got the virisus?

I've lost a computer to viruses. I'm not the only one who used it so I'm not a 100% what caused it. But I have my theories on the matter.

Eh, I think two. Due to the Anti-Virus Pro virus, until I learned how to cure it.

Where I got them? One was from a porn site the other from Encyclopedia Dramtica.

Been there.

"Ooh, what's this do?"

*downloads*

*launches .exe*

*watches command prompt flash on screen and disappear*

"Aw, crap."

Took me a few times to learn my lesson on that one...haven't TOTALLY lost a computer yet, but have done more complete re-installs than I care to think about.

I had to reformat my first computer due to viruses, but I shared it with my family so I'm not sure who was responsible. Since then I've had my own computers and they haven't been beaten by viruses yet. My excessive paranoia does come in handy sometimes.

When my age was still in single digits, I did trash my dad's computer on accident. Since then however, I haven't gotten one.

I once got a very nasty virus in my early teens during my first excursions into internet porn. Ever since, I've had a near-paranoid caution when approaching unfamiliar sites, especially if they seem "seedy". More often than not, I just stick with the safe and intuitive Google Image Search.

None. I'm a technician, it's something of a point of pride for me. Did once run a clever SOB from a USB key that tweaked the autorun settings to add an extra "Explore" entry that ran the virus. Realized I'd clicked on the "wrong" Explore, though, and pulled my machine off the LAN, grabbed my critical data, and used a Ghost-made image to put it back to the way it was a few weeks previous. No one noticed, which is a nice trick since that was my work PC.

Almost one, but I saved it!
Then the hard drive broke for an unrelated reason. :(
I think it had to do with the fact that it was 12 or 13 years old...
