Coming from the guy who made another N64 shooter that played fairly poorly (hello N64 controller you are terrible for shooters)
conquers bad furday was also on n64. god i had a lot of fun with that game, and i dont remember its controlls to ahve been bad. actualy quite good for that day and age even.. so n64 unsuitable for shooters? no. i think you hit it right o nthe head with perfect dark and goldeneye.
Good point. I love Conker's bad fur day. :D.

Also, you might want to check your post, since you've quoted me in such a ways as though I'm saying what you actually are. XD

Well Bioshock did innovative stuff. Well for the first 5 or so hours at least, then it turned into another generic shooter, but those first 5 hours were fucking amazing.
Isn't the game essentially five hours long? Somewhat near that number. Half Life innovated in storyline and FEAR was just fear. :X

No, its about 10 hours. But you could just cut out everything after the first five hours and it would have been a better experience.

Poorly, uh... no... Jet Force Gemini, although a bit limited in it's controls, played fairly well, also Turok games played rather nicely, also the (quite atrocious) Duke Nukem Zero Hour's controls played fairly well, of course not mentioning Golden Eye, Perfect Dark AND Conker's Bad Fur Day wich wasn't a shooter at it's heart, until you bring 4 friends and start decapitating each other with katanas, play sniper duels and go kamikaze with grenades... ahh... I miss those days...

Yeah, the newest controllers, specifically the 360 controller, are way much better than the N64, but for it's time it was a great controller for shooters and still today I grab an N64 controller with no problem at all and start doing headshots and decapitating my friends with a katana.

I can think of these examples on innovation:

Battlefield 1942

Deus Ex

Call of Duty 2

Crysis

Ok, not all of them are recently, but they are post Golden eye, and somehow they put a lot of innovations in their formulas, that were duplicated over and over in other PC titles and Consoles.
All those are PC titles, which was the point Hollis stated.

Starsiege Tribes was my fav FPS of all time. Every other FPS after that has sucked and takes little skill to master

I'm wondering, what's there to innovate... shooter means you've got to shoot things. Though, removing options and simplifying things just to make it convenient on the console is indeed getting old... this includes any game and is rather a physical limitation, not lack of new ideas.

not much room to maneuver with move-aim-shoot. especially when thats all you need to make a major console release these days. FPSs like system shock and AVP were fully entertaining adn innovative, but nowadays, PC is a niche market and console FPSs have to be made for the lowest common denominator, what reason is there for consoles to innovate?

have to disagree on the online multiplayer bit though; though that might be because im an anti-social loser. couch MP has always been infinitely more...better, i think is what hes trying to say, and no agrument there; random online games are an exercise in frustration, and i cannot fathom how people can enjoy that more than playing with friends (as statistics have shown).

Of course, but the article says he cannot think of an innovative PC exclusive FPS, which reminded me those gems, along with Zeno clash, that is.

Ye that is a fair point. I think there are two or three major problem that is causing the stagnation.
1. The lack of engines being built for games. Most shooters now just seem to be using Unreal and Havok.
2. The sucess of games like COD:MW2 have inspired a string of copy cat games to try get in on the action. This I blame more on publishers than developers but I may be wrong, developers may have just lost their imagination.
3. The high cost that goes into making a AAA FPS means that risks can't really be taken. If the game bombs after having a massive budget it could mean the end of the developer.

Just my 2 cents

I'm just going to say this. FPS's, like any other genere, can be great if done right. A lot has to go into the recipe to make it great and not all ingrediants are known to us. Some games are awesome without really knowing why. In my case it's possibly nostalgia but whatever. My point is any genre can have an amazing game and the greats are few and far between. But they are there.

I'd like to see those innovations on PC that didn't make it to console. As far as I know, there are few modern shooters that arent on at least PC AND one of the consoles.

Also, I do miss split-screen multiplayer. It's what made the Gamecube's shooters fun. And sure the Halos and Call of Duty do it, but everyone else has jumped that ship.
True there aren't many PC exclusive shooters, but probably what he meant is that even PC versions are developing the genre more. Take TF2 for example. It's on every major platform except Wii, but the PC gamers get a better experience from modded maps, custom game modes, the Mann Co. Store, and everything else. Seems to me he's saying a lot of the innovation comes from the community even in PC games, but that's pure conjecture. Even so, because of xbox live restrictions and to some extent a lack of gamers on PSN, those platforms are less friendly to change.
