I am not a huge fan of conspiracy theories.

I also don't like the strategy of labelling rumours and very, very inconvenient truths as conspiracy theories to discredit people eager to cover things up.

However, the always online thing is not a conspiracy, it's a business strategy Microsoft (and others) made look very real well before the reveal... so... nope, that ain't no conspiracy theory. Also, be aware that quite a remarkable number of folks still consider this to be a good idea and the future, so... yeah.

As for the surveillance thing... well, I don't know how well informed you are on an average day, but most of what's been 'revealed' so far is pretty much business as usual. Everyone's doing it, and there are a number of reasons why that is - or could be - a good thing.

I also prefer camera surveillance to cutter unts causing us a lot of headaches, costs and clear and present threats. There are things I consider to be very much private, so I guess my encrypted correspondence is saved somewhere. If I remain to be the nice person I mostly am, however, I do believe that that will never become a proper issue for me or anyone else. After all, I don't dabble in magic much and the grudges I hold are usually delivered cold and on a very personal level, so I doubt that makes me a vesuvian martian vulcan spacecunt person of interest.

But seriously, I don't fully believe any conspiracy theory (except those proven to be true) but I question stuff. The JFK plot, aliens, 9/11- all these things are worth looking into and I believe there's more to them but still.

I'm fairly sure that the English government is only trying to push education reforms through because it allows them to feel smug and superior over us. A theory only reinforced by the number of times I've seen 'comparisons' between A level papers now and A level papers 20 years ago. It makes me want to mail one of my Further Maths papers to the editors and ask them to solve it.

Oh, please, that one's a lot more mundane than that - the Labour government's grand plan for education was to keep everybody in school until they were 18 and then get 50% of the population into uni simply because that was the easiest way to keep kids off the streets, not because it would result in an educated workforce. That ideology has since been replaced with the "everybody gets a trophy", teach-to-the-test equalisation that has only served to render education even more useles; league tables and targeting have made things worse.

Yeah, I'm still bitter that A**'s are being handed out like candy for papers that would have barely got a C during my GCSEs 17 years ago...

I agree. Everyone seems to be going to uni. I remember in 6th form, our form lessons were mainly about sorting uni out eg UCAS etc. There was about 5 of us sat in a seperate class being told that we were all going to work in maccy dees or similar shop if we didnt go to uni. Look at me now ive got a decent full time job (40 hours a week) with prospects and all my uni mates are working in maccy dees or a shop (not that, thats a bad thing). How ironic????

All it does is devalues the degree system and our apprenticeship schemes. When my dad was a youngster only the uber smart kids got to uni and everyone else got an apprenticeship (and still got good jobs)

This is what I think of conspiracy theories:


There is no doubt that conspiracies have and will happen, but the vast VAST majority of them are completely moronic.

As said in the above video, Conspiracy Theorists are never wrong, instead the list of conspirators increases the more evidence there is stacked against the "Theory".

Indeed, I feel this movie sums it up very well. Most of the conspiracy theories out there are perfectly absurd. In a way also, conspiracy theories are not strictly speaking theories, as there is basically no way of disproving them (at least in the eye of the believer). Whatever fact come up for or against it always serves only as further proof that the theory is true. I always like to refer to Wilson & Shea´s "Illuminati" trilogy - an incredibly fun read showing how far it is possible to take this theorizing and also perfectly showing that strange logic leading to the conclusion that the more a theory is absurd, the more it is actually true. Really, those books are full of great points. Like for example, if a huge conspiracy of a cabal of elitists ruling the world was true, wouldn´t they have enough power to cover up so as not to be discovered by some morons on the internet? Even possible throwing down some minor and unimportant stuff with the only purpose of keeping the attention of the conspiracy-hungry crowd somewhere else?
And now comes the book´s great tour-de-force: Therefore, it is true!

Honestly, I´d love some conspiracy theories to be true (here, I´m obviously referring to the illuminati-and-such stuff, not to the less funny, but unfortunately possibly more likely grim political shit). I feel it´d make the world more fun, we´d have Yettis in the mountains, aliens in stasis somewhere in Area 51 and all that stuff... It would be like living in a comic book. It would also mean there is some order and purpose to what´s happening. Plus honestly, if that cabal ruling the world were Free-masons, Templars, Illuminati or Jews, I´d be all the happier. From what I know about them, we´d be in much better hands than if those political figures we see on TV were really in charge...

I sort of subscribe to the whole illuminati thing. I believe there is a small group of people making all the decisions and we have no say at all. Its not really a difficult concept theres only a few really large stock trading companies/banks and their power over the world is immense. Not to mention that there are only a few people that run the media in the world (cough murdoch cough) and the media is a massively powerful tool for controlling a nation

Well, I don't think I believe in conspiracy theories, but when I discuss libertarian philosophies with people they tend to think I'm crazy, so what do I know? I guess I find it strange that both political parties (in America) seem to have the exact same policies, but people still think they're opposites. It seems to me like there is a lot of bipartisan agreement on issues, and they just keep up the pretense that they're different in order to fool the American people into thinking that they actually have a choice in who their leaders are. Politicians are good at rigging the system to maintain personal power.

As far as the whole one world government thing goes, I half believe it. I don't think the Illuminati are taking over, but there is no denying that U.N. laws are trumping American laws. Obama has tried to declare U.N. decisions laws without congressional approval several times, even though that is illegal. Just look at the ACTA bill. Ten times worse than SOPA, and there would have been no congressional approval on it, which means the American people would have no voice in the matter.

Now, if you'll excuse me I need to polish my tinfoil hat.

Why wouldn't the Soviet's have called them out on it? Better yet, why would the Soviets have played along, monitoring the communications between earth and Apollo 11 (which they agreed was in space--they even promised that their Luna 15 would not interfere with it), and never once calling bullshit on the whole thing?

As to what it actually is, I can't find any reputable sources to begin using to make a judgement. If this is anything like most archaeological "mysteries" the real archaeologists figured it out years ago, and the rest of us just aren't reading the right literature It'd probably be important to look at other figure from a similar region and time period. If they had a habit of exaggerating features/combining features from different animals/adding shit that wasn't really there, then the butterfly theory becomes a perfect fit.

JFK's assassination is far too fishy for me to accept the official explanation, so while it's not enough to say there was some big conspiracy I don't think things went down as exactly as they said for whatever reason.

The conspiracy around the Titanic doesn't seem that far fetched, not that they deliberately sunk it but I can believe they used another similar looking ship if the Titanic wasn't ready for use, especially if there was a lot of money riding on it.

Don't believe the moon landing was faked for one moment since the theories either require too many people to know, or that they're so elaborate that it would have been easier for NASA to just go to the moon anyway, without of course forgetting that not a single person has come forward as a whistle blowing since and well dead people don't have much to fear...

Most recent of course is 9/11, I used to assign some credibility to the theories thanks to Loose Change, but then changed my mind when they were thoroughly destroyed and debunked, that doesn't necessarily mean the conspiracy theorists are wrong just that they don't have any current evidence to suggest they're right, and there is how the towers fell - that is fishy.

Might get some flak for this, but I've always agreed that 9/11 was an inside job in order to get the Patriot Act put into law and generally approved by the American public through fear.

Glad you said it first! I think the patriot act was coming anyway and the goal was more about legitimising invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. there are just so many things that dont make sense with the official story. or just dont make sense at all.
