That dog ruined the moment, Darned, someone should have shot the duck.
I'll admit that seeing the duck almost made me shout 'fuck', it would have been my first cuss since 2008.
Congratulations, this comic has made hundreds of people look for their lightguns on reflex on seeing that duck.

I think it might have something to do with how the gamers playing farmville are causing all this video game advancement to fall to the dark ages, which in turn is like being back to the days of the original nintendo.

I thoroughly get the Bladerunner reference, and the game references, but I think I'm too old for one factor: I know who the guy's referencing - but who's he actually supposed to be? If he's just a gamer everyman, the satire seems a bit flat. If he's someone specific who's passed on recently, the message becomes a bit more poignant.

It's a turn on the quote from the baddie's final monologue in Blade Runner:

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe: Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion; I've watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time; like tears in rain. Time to die."

I think I feel old.
HOLY CRAP HOW COULD I FORGET!?

THank you so much! I should have known this.

well, in 'artistic' movies, the death of a character is symbolized by the flying away of a dove, the soul soaring away on wings of ethereal freedom. or, apparently a pixellated duck. that made me laugh, although I think that's not the real joke.

I saw the movie, I knew Duck Hunt and I didn't even giggle, maybe because it came too late, it wasn't funny for me.

All these "You haven't seen Blade Runner you should die, I've seen it I'm so cool" comments make me sick. Anyway, this coomic was just a big pop culture reference not one of your better attempts, but I'll come back for more.

And if you don't include Citizen Kain in that list you will re-open old wounds that have healed after being -required- to watch and discuss that movie not once, not twice, but thrice.
"You're right, I did lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars this year. I expect to lose a million dollars next year. You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I'll have to close this place in... 60 years."

I don't know how quoting Citizen Kane improves my standing in this argument, but I felt challenged dammit!
Ha ha, thank you. That actually makes me feel a little better knowing that someone enjoyed the movie enough to memorize a quote from it. Although it was kind of gratifying seeing the similarities between Kain and Andrew Ryan from Bioshock now that I think of it. In any event, well done sir, well played indeed.

I get the Blade Runner part.

But not the duck and the dog.

Yes, Blade Runner is worth your time if you haven't seen it yet. It was made back when it took actual craftsmanship to made special effects, not CGI. You'll appreciate the difference. The story is great, too.

Ditto. i was kinda shocked too. Blade Runner is such an influential Sci-Fi movie, and as you mentioned in a later post, from a visual perspective too, it pushed boundries and looked fantastic,

i presented a Media Project for school on the techniques used in Blade Runner, and i recieved a similar response to my class mates "Ive Never heard of Blade Runner"

those who use age as a defense are just plain ignorant lol, im only 21 but i first viewed the movie at 10 years of age, and to date have seen all versions of the Film (Theatrical, Directors cut, Final Cut etc etc

There are plenty of Blade Runner/ Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep references in Pop culture and modern Society today/

Just look at Googles' flagship Android OS Phone... Its called the Nexus One (paying Homage to the Nexus Six Model androids in the story/film)

and even a Japanese Electric Car Manufacturer has recently made the sound that the car produces (they have to add sounds to electric cars, so the people can hear them coming) the same as the hover cars in Blade Runner, to pay Homage to such a cult classic.

So to those that have never seen the film, nor Read Philip L Dicks' Novel, Do yourself a Favor and Read/watch it =)

Oh and "that" quote has actually been my motto in my profile forever =)

There is no punchline. It is satire. The references and setup are ment to move your thoughts along specific lines to see some more subtle joke. One of those jokes that doesn't have you rolling in laughter but rather smiling, perhaps whimsically, perhaps melancholy or maybe even guiltily. It points out something that is actually kinda silly and gives us a chance to snicker at it even if we take the subject very seriously.

These are the best jokes I think and this one was a masterpiece.

But you need to be a old and/or an Ubernerd to catch all the references.
If this comic had sound, probably they would put Sepultura playing Bela Lugosi's Dead.

Fixed that for you. Also:

"You're reading along on a website when you see a comic strip that references Blade Runner. Everyone around you is cracking up, but you're not laughing."

"What do you mean, I'm not laughing?"

"I mean you're not laughing. Why is that, Leon?"

I am confused.

Not at the comic. I'm confused that so many people missed the Blade Runner reference.

Blade Runner isn't that old, is it?

EDIT: I count 8 comments so far that didn't get the reference.

Now I'm sad. I'll probably cuddle up in the sofa with my Blade Runner Final Cut Edition on Blu-Ray later to forget about the sacrilege that has transpired here today.
I know right?

This was the funniest, to me, Critical miss yet, and not just because the walls of text are absent, but because I get the Quake 3 and Blade Runner references. This one is made my sides hurt. nuff said

See, you lost the reference. Bela lugises's dead is probably one of the most covered songs of all time.

snip... "Malcovich. Malcovich Malcovich Malcovich." ...end snip.
Isn't that the part where Malcovich finds his way to the top of the pyramid? Meets up with the boss dude in the badass fur coat... Tyrone, wasn't it? Then he's all like "The candle that burns twice as bright can only burn for half as long. And you have burned oh so very brightly."

my favourite quote :)
