If your going to fornicate you may as well use a condom. That's the part the church needs to work on to help save lives. However, there is nothing wrong with waiting to have sex until your married. In fact I believe it's actually better for a relationship. However, if you are going to have sex outside of marriage then seriously, use a condom. That's the part those Africans need to get down as well =P

I think most people are like that. Why wouldn't anyone do that?

For me, it's like when you go to college and in their orientation meetings they say "Alcohol is completely forbidden for people under the age of 21, which you are. Therefore you cannot drink. However if you WERE to drink, here are some safety tips".

I mean, no one is being fooled that underage people in college don't drink. I'd rather there be some safety training for them though than just throwing them out there and hoping they don't die from alcohol poisoning. Not everyone in college drinks, but those who do made that choice and they need to know how to be safe.

It's the same with sex. Some people make that choice for various reasons and I'm not saying that it's good or bad either way but I would rather they have something available to them where they would not get pregnant or spread disease than them just wander off willy-nilly. You know?

yeah, btw, did I accidentally say I was in favour of abstinence until marriage in the post?

And as a sidenote, what's with all these people on the Escapist who have never had sex yet seem to deride it as some sort of useless, horrible, disease-spreading life-ruining activity only participated in by drunken rutting idiots? I'm seeing a rise in them recently, and it's a little bit worrying.

And it's probably due to 16 and Pregnant. Have you seen that show? It makes my ovaries shrivel up every time I see it. Honestly, they attribute some of the low teen birth rate to that show and I don't doubt it. *shiver*

because you might want to have sex without spending your life with that person, or having to share all your money with them?

Yea and what if you find out that the person you want to marry is terrible I mean TERRIBLE in bed... that would suck!

One can easily improve on their sexual abilities if they want to. Much like any other learned skill.

This whole thing just makes me sad. The Pope is, for a lot of people, the last word on God's will. He should be someone that all Christians can hold up as an example of good Christian morals. We should not have to apologize for his ignorance,and people most definitely should not be dying because his poor interpretation of scripture. I can't claim to know what God wants, but I know it is not this.

EVERYONE, The Church is assuming that you are not having casual sex. The Church says No Sex Until Marriage. That is the position of the Church and why they do not like condoms for STD control, because you should only have sex with one person (your husband/wife).

I gotta take issue with this.

A condoms effectiveness is generally placed at 99%. The reason is that there is 98-99% chance that sperm might somehow get around the protection (It might slip off or break from incorrect use).Now as you state the chance of getting HIV from a singular encounter of unprotected sex is 1 in 1000. This is an approximation and many factors weigh in on it. For men for example this chance is lower. Some specific forms of sex raises the chance. However these numbers are only estimates and it has to be understood that all it takes is once, no matter how unlikely it is.

Now to lower that chance to 1 in 5 you don't need to have sex 200 people. You need to have sex 200 times with an infected person. The number of infected persons in the US is estimated at around 1.1 million out if an estimated 310 million people. We can take away the children I assume so we are at 250 million people. So that chance of an encounter with an infected person is about 0.4%.

So if you had protected sex with 200 people there should be 1 of them that is infected. Then there is 1% chance that the condom doesn't work, and then a 0.1% chance of being infected (again effected greatly by circumstance). So around a 0.001% chance of infection. And this is assuming you are not choosy with your partners AND that the infected partner is willing (an estimated 50% of infected are now aware of the infection).

So in closing: The risks are minuscule but they are real and the "prize" for winning is death, so be careful. Abstinence will save your life but if you are not going to refrain from sex then at least remember the condom, and choose your partner with care.

You think that's bad, in his recent end of the year speech the Pope blamed secular society for the molestations committed by priests. That's right, according to him, its societal values towards sexual deviants (he even claims that people are becoming open to 'child pornography' and pedophilia) that are causing HIS employees to rape Catholic children. The stupid hurts so much. The best part is, some people actually believe it, my mother's Catholic and she completely agrees with him. This is just getting bloody crazy.
