Anyone wonder if some of the people saw the notice and figured it was something like this. Then took a show in front of it anyways? While I do feel bad for the victims, perhaps this will be a good lesson for them.

Harwell, however, knew that he needed to do something more to get these women to walk in front of the camera without any clothes on. So he created fake error messages that said there was a problem with an internal sensor and the only way to solve this was to put the computer "near hot steam for several minutes." Supposedly the steam would clean the sensor.

You'd think that anyone with common sense would've had some kind of warning go off in their head when this message appeared ("Steam is good for a computer? Seriously?"), but several women apparently took their laptops into the bathroom with them when they took a shower. Harwell managed to accumulate thousands of pictures of his victims.
I honestly can't believe that worked. Even once would have been a miracle but several times? How dim can people be? I truly do feel sorry for them.

Well... Not everybody is computer savvy enough to know that...

You know what? You're right. Nevermind.

"That said, it sounds like Harwell's going to be headed to prison soon, which couldn't happen to a more-deserving guy."

Now, that's just not true. There are tens of thousands of people more deserving of prison than this guy. Some women have had their pictures taken. At least no one was killed.

Gah....paranoia fuel if i ever saw it.

*sigh* I know the women's mistake seems incredibly stupid, but the fact is that there are lot of people like that, even in this day and age. Especially if you fall on the older side of the age spectrum. My dad works with electronics, so he's more than fine, but while my mom does use a laptop and such, she just plain doesn't know much about computers in general.

And as it's been mentioned before, the law does indeed protect this "stupidity"...if a girl gets into a car with a stranger, thinking they're going to the nearest gas station, but instead is transported elsewhere, raped, and murdered, the law takes on this case and punishes the offender, even though the girl should've known better.

This is somewhat off-topic, but I find it rather hilarious that somewhere at the Escapist HQ there's a computer with a folder full of highly suggestive but not actually explicit thumbnail images for every news post involving sex.

Agreed.

I find it hard to sympathise with people when they are being stupid, even if somebody else is taking advantage of the stupidity.

Lack of knowledge is the definition of stupidity, actually.
As per dictionary.com:

Ignorance- lack of knowledge, information, or education.

Stupidity- lacking ordinary quickness and keenness of mind.
Well, to be fair, I didn't say it was dictionary.com's definition. I already explained the rest above.

Personally, I blame education.
I don't see why, really I don't. Being 'educated' and recieving any kind of academic award for something tends to give people a false perception of competence. That and much of what was taught would change from year to year, making it all but redundant in a lot of areas too soon to be very effective.

I'd blame education, and the general perception held by society, in the sense that people often don't want to learn, it's not that it's difficult to learn (the basics anyway), it's that people regard learning as a chore not a worthy challenge, which is where education is going wrong.

Sure, everyone knows that dunking your PC in water is a fast way to eat hundreds of dollars, but steam? I wouldn't expect many to be incredibly suspicious of that.
I would, bear in mind that this isn't simply computer related, it's electronics in general. People 'know' that electronics + water = bad news usually, and presumably people 'know' that steam = vaporized water, so they wouldn't be suspicious, not even pausing to check it with somebody else? Obviously someone did, while also evidently not being tech-savvy.

That's why I think they're stupid, and while they don't deserve this, it's hardly surprising.[/quote]

This is why I don't use computers.

You may ask how I'm posting this, and from what, or where?

Well the answer is simple, it is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition. And, it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.
but I know when your posting it from, yes.. I'm on to you buddy!

back to topic:

it somewhat boggles my mind that he even wanted to see random pictures of customers
if he has that kind of it skill why not just hack a porn site, or heck.. it's not like you have to look for it.. Google will provide!
great life tip:
don't type anything weird into Google, you will end up wanting brain bleach, and it does not exist believe me i tried searching for that too

it's really more bizarre than anything..
a that people are that gullible
b that he has that patience for what surely must be a terribly low um.. return?

I'm pretty certain everyone in this thread calling the victims stupid would be singing a different tune if the story was about an auto mechanic who overcharged people by telling them their left cylinder was misfiring or some shit. The only reason you're saying "these idiots!" is because you know enough about the subject that it seems obvious. You can say "oh, they should've known", and maybe that's true, but - and this is key - blaming the victims of exploitation for the exploitation always makes you a shithead.
Thank you so hard this. Seriously, I'm facepalming so hard at this thread.
Actually, I would blame myself for not knowing better, and that is the whole point.

Of course the bastard is at fault the most, if not completely, but at this day and age, where information is readily available for FREE, you should know better than to not equip yourself with the necessary knowledge to at least not fall into traps like these.

I'm not blaming these girls for becoming victims, but I do think that it's one's own responsibility to gain at least rudimentary knowledge of the thing you're using. Not being quick-minded enough to think that there's something wrong about the whole thing is just... stupid, especially since there should've been three warning bells going off in their heads.

I know several people who are completely computer-illiterate, but even they know better than to drop a laptop, put it near water, or leave it overcharging. Because they know that laptops are somewhat like bulkier cellphones, and I'm sure everyone uses handphones.

Well...
This happens to remind me of a point I was making to a few friends a while back.

It was a comparison between a computer and a car.
Both are incredibly complex devices, and unless you work in an industry associated with them, you can't be expected to understand, in detail, exactly how they work.
Both can be (mis)used to wreck your life, or the life of others(sure, cars make it EASIER, but still)
However...
Before they let you drive a car, you must take lessons and pass tests.
To use a computer, all you have to do is buy a computer.

Seems stupid to me.

Aye, but people tend to spend more time with computers in their lifetime than they do with cars (You can use the computer when you're as young as three these days). Even then, when you want to drive a car, or be involved in its use, you are expected to have rudimentary knowledge (e.g. How to change a tire, how to change the oil, fill the gas tank, signal). Doesn't it follow that you should also brush up on your computer knowledge as well before diving into it completely?

If we're going to use the car analogy, not knowing that there is something wrong when your electricity-consuming device 'demands' that you put it near water is comparable to not knowing that something is wrong when your car 'demands' that you scratch its chassis with the keys.

Again, I'm not saying that the girls are to blame for the crime, I'm just saying that it could've been preventable for them if they just bothered to learn a bit more of what they're using.

(Also, I think he was doing this with the intention of selling said stills off. I doubt that he was doing it just for masturbation material.)
