But changing WHY people do a thing does change "what it actually is." Many people didn't realize the Washington Redskins' name was offensive to Native Americans, but the vast majority of fans (I have no exact numbers or citation, just going on my gut seeing as if someone had any hate in their heart for Native Americans, they wouldn't support a team with such a mascot) had no idea shouting their name in support of a team they loved was offensive. Even when they brought the fact up over the past few decades, the argument was essentially "that's not our intent; leave the team name alone." But I doubt telling people where "twerking" comes from will give the act of it as it stands now any more reverence or less of a sexual connotation.
1) They knew their logo was a Native American.
2) Ignorance that what you are doing is racist doesn't make it any less racist.
3)Twerking that has existed in US black hip hop clubs for decades isn't suddenly different because white people started doing it too.

And I cannot officially unsee it now myself. Pretty sure you did that on purpose...

(Nah just wanted to share my almost accident)

IDK what you guys are seeing but this is what comes up when I search it:
I got a lot of unclothed vaginas taking up all of the image. Maybe you have safe search on? My issue was only that I'm at work and don't want to get accused of looking up porn.

Google and their algorithms.. Yes, I have my safe search on because one time I was trying to look up an image of a hot dog with children present and learned my lesson quickly. I am also forever scarred by when I tried to google sonic the hedgehog.

If your boss catches you, you can totally use the excuse that you're just looking up culturally-accurate, totally innocent, African dances!
If it's not sexual for children, then it's not sexual for you either!

If google safe search isn't on there is nothing safe for anyone. People and their weird cartoon fetish furry bestiality porn have ruined the internet for everyone. You can safely search Mapouka on Bing though:

I just heard about this. Kinda gross, whatever cultural differences there may be. But the age of consent and marriage is way way way younger in other cultures, so as much as this is so not for me, it is for someone.

The scary thing was that my brother's girlfriend was a blonde haired, blue eyed white Christian American family that tried to force her to marry a dirty old man at the age of 14. This is still sadly a problem in the US, especially in the south. When you just listen to all the american girls this has happened to you will realize it isn't just " another culture's problem" If my brother had not let her hide out at our home, she would have essentially been "sold" to that creep.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I'm disappointed in myself for not instead making the quip that I've seen you advocate the glory of the sun butt more than I've advocated the glory of Jesus. ;)
Lol, that would be a good one. Although my enjoyment of her is mostly ironic since I realize she doesn't exist. Although, interestingly my stance on religion softened a lot after I was introduced to Princess Celestia since she is kind of portrayed as godly early on and my desire for her to be real (I mean a god that just wants you to improve yourself and only asks for letters detailing how you have? awesome.) caused me to go from vehemently anti-theist to at least understanding the theist point of view and being less harsh on those that do believe in it.

It actually goes back to an traditional African dance that was brought into hip hop in black communities a long time ago, you probably would not even be aware of it if Miley hadn't started doing it too, and no it wasn't about sex. On the old escapist, I had posted the old black and white film footage of them twerking in a ritual, but you can find plenty of videos from Africa online with it.

Traditionally in some tribes, they twerked for other women, not men.

Mind you all you have to do is google " gymnastics leotard" to see that we were wearing pantyhose thin one piece swimsuits while we had boys pressing their bodies against us in their own thin uniforms to see that would be considered " worse" if you were to be thinking of it sexually. Our leotards are actually THINNER than swimsuits.
I remember going to Jamaica on a cruise back in the 90s, and I took a tour to a local banana plantation. One of the things of "local culture" they showed us on that little bus tour, was a local dance routine, done by....I dunno, a girl probably the same age range as the ones in this film? And it was very much some booty shaking and spread leg stuff. So yeah, it's hardly a new thing.

To 1, I'd simply say the mascot is (was) not an offensive depiction of a Native American; it's not something like MLB's Cleveland Indians old logo that made a caricature of its chosen imagery.

To 2, objectively racist? I'd agree; "Redskins" is a racist term. But subjectively? I've compared murder to manslaughter on this forum before. Thousands of fans have called them the "Redskins" since the '30s with never once any malicious intent; they love their team; I'd not call those people "racists." Misinformed? Unawares? Absolutely. Hell, I was one of them (not a fan, but a vicarious supporter through a familial relation.) But racists? No, I can't follow you there.

To 3, I never once implied that because any non-black women started doing it, that fact changed anything. I simply suggested that the fact that they are doing it, the argument that it's just a version of a traditional African dance with no sexual implication in modern times holds little weight.

We're both pretty dug in and getting nowhere. I respect you, your opinion and more generally, the reasoned content you provide on this site, and am perfectly happy to agree to disagree on this particular issue. You see empowered, young women expressing themselves and having fun; I see children being exploited for their ill-informed sexuality. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

It only went " mainstream" due to Miley doing it. It was already being done in black clubs for ages before anyone noticed. No one cared that black girls were doing it for decades and they suddenly care now. Of course I don;t think all redskins fans are racist, but yea the word redskins is horribly racist. TBH though saying they have been using it since the 30's isn't really helping, that was a horribly racist period in US history where the KKK had power and when they built a crap ton of confederate statues to worship their racists Heroes. That was a very dark period in US history.

I understand where you are coming from. You want to protect the girls from the creeps out there that do think the wrong things about them and want to exploit and abuse them. From my point of view, I also remember being one of the girls that was being " policed" by others when I just wanted to be myself and be left alone so I could have fun too. Usually when you try to overprotect girls like that though it backfires miserably and the girls then resent you and rebel and intentionally try to provoke a reaction. The quickest way to make a girl behave worse than you ever imagined is to tell her what she can and cannot do with her own body. My mom used to tell me this applied to me:
There was a little girl with a pretty curl right in the middle of her forehead, when she was good, she was very very good and when she was bad she was horrid!

It is better to let girls wear what they want so you don't have them turn out like " Karen" from Shameless. It is a matter of picking your battles.

I guess, but at least Honey BooBoo was rightfully panned and Americans have, for the most part, come to the idea the girl pageants and stripping contests are a bad idea.

I am not sure they have decided they are a bad idea in the south though, maybe they just slowed down due to the pandemic. You should get a load of some of the evangelicals around here..

The image wouldn't happen to be Batman lovingly holding a pregnant Shrek with a Sonic fetus growing inside him would it. (Ok, now I AM trying to purposely scar all of you)

Because people "shamed" them for it. I feel bad for the girls for having to put up with what arseholes online think about them. Boys can run around topless and no one bats an eye but OMG girls have skin how dare they!!
Or...it's not representative of the film?

Look, the original poster doesn't offend me, but the French poster does seem to do a better job of representing the tone of the film itself, or at least the tone as it's portrayed in the trailer.

Like, I dunno, if I want a poster for a Batman movie, I'm going to have Bruce Wayne in his batsuit rather than a dinner jacket for a Wayne Manor fundraiser, even if that's part of the plot.

Eh, I don't think anyone has been targeting the girls themselves (Do they have Twitter accounts?) If there's anyone you should feel bad for it's the director of the film, I would think they'd get hate mail sent to them long before anyone thought of sending any to the girls.
