I'm one of those that flat-out stopped reading Spider-man after they broke up the marriage. Guess what? I'm a GIRL comic fan. I happened to LIKE Mary Jane and the Spider-Girl comics with Mayday Parker.

OMD was years ago and I'm STILL just as pissed off about it now as I was then.

Can't say I'm too happy with Superman and Lois splitting up.

Didn't the Incredibles show us that Super Families are the opposite of dead-ends and you can tell a whole lot more stories with a much wider cast of likable, familial characters instead? Why must EVERY superhero be single so the writers can do terrible fan fiction between Spider-man/She-Hulk, Superman/Wonder Woman, Batman/Squirrel Girl.... ugh.

Being a parent and spouse and a superhero is an adventure worth at least several decades worth of comic storytelling all on its own. Only bad writers (or editors) say otherwise.

I feel a disturbance in the DC force...

No, no, no, no, NO! Did I mention no? That's a horrible idea, did they not read One More Day? You leave them the hell alone DC! If you do this I will not forgive you for this betrayal and you will be on my shit list along side with Quesada!

I haven't read anything other than Deadpool from Marvel's camp after One More Day. Apparently he's their only character that gets a shred of respect from the line's writers (who are fantastic, all of them).

From that quote, it sounds like they just want to rewrite the marriage and just kind of exploit it for what it is. Not necessarily destroy the marriage altogether.

It's deplorable how both companies handle their continuity though.

Am I the only one out there who hopes that DC loses a crap-ton of money in the coming years from all this juggling of classic characters? Why do you have to change a character's backstory in order to explore different facets? Doesn't DC have a line called "Elseworlds" that they use to explore these different ideas? 'Kingdom Come' and 'Superman: Red Son' were two of my favorite.
No you are not, DC hasn't been making me the happiest of comic readers with their decisions for awhile now.
Two words: Amazon Attack.

"Oh god...bees"

I missed Elsewords though. Batman the pirate was freaking awesome.
You'll thank me later.

Why do they always want to break up iconic superhero couples? It pisses me off that they do this. Also the freakin boy scout of all people getting a divorce. This is the kind of crap that pisses me off.

Hmmm...I've got a sudden image of Superman getting together with the current Batgirl, and the rest of the DC universe gritting their teeth and not commenting.

I kept hoping something like that was gonna happen with One More Day, but did it? NO. No it did not. (Fuck you, Quesada)
Well, yeah... it's Marvel. Marvel doesn't "reboot," they just keep making left turns until everything comes back around again ;) Let's not forget - OMD paradoxically deletes ITSELF from existance, leading to...

Since by it's nature the OMD "devil rejiggers timeline so we never married in exchange for making it so Spidey never revealed his identity" deal removes the context for the deal itself to have been made in the first place, the "new" timeline has another reason for it having happened: Spidey got a bunch of high-level magic/science Marvel characters to do the time-remapping instead - wiping out everyone's memory but his own. He tries to ALSO preserve Mary-Jane's memory so they can still be together... but she REFUSES - she's finally had enough of being a villain-magnet, and WANTS them to break up and forget because it'll be best for everyone. So, "in reality" he DIDN'T make a deal with the devil - he got "let off the hook" re: adult relationships because someone figured out for the first time EVER that being a superhero's girlfriend kinda sucks.

At some point, Marvel will need another big Spidey-centered event, and some writer and/or editor who prefers Peter and MJ being together will make "undoing" OMD/OMIT a personal mission - probably with someone punching-out Mephisto for good measure.

I wonder why they even feel such a large scale reboot is necessary. I can understand trying to modernize or make them more relateable but completely redoing everything almost seems to me like they're trying to cover up something they're ashamed of.
Because when you do one, you're virtually garaunteed to get a HUGE explosion of media press and sell a ton of books all at once as people buy them to see "what the big deal is." The "side-story" to the DCU semi-reboot is that it's happening in-tandem with DC's BIG push into releasing some books in digital-download form the same day as in stores, so having it be both an "event" and having the books be "new beginnings" fits in with that dynamic. It's marketing, and it CLEARLY works as we're talking about it (free advertising!) on a website that's not even devoted to comics ;)

It still sounded to me like they were gonna get together, but build up towards it again as opposed to beginning with them married. Doesn't sound so bad to me, but then I've never had an attachment to Superman of any kind.

Rumor has it that the marriage is being dissolved so Superman can start getting some super-powered love from Wonder Woman. If that's the case, I'm sure I'm not the only one whose mind went to a bad place when I thought about the Amazon Princess using her lasso on the Man of Steel.
My mind went to this:

30 seconds in. I love Mallrats.

Yeah, sales must be dipping again.

To be fair, if this was just Superman being single again, then I'm all for it. Iconic characters should never be married. Ever. It was a huge mistake when Marvel forced it on Spidey, and it was a huge mistake when DC forced it on Superman (srsly, leave Batman alone ffs). One More Day was probably the worst possible way to make it happen, but the end result -- Single Spiderman, (hopefully) moar black cat -- was worth it.

Trouble is, things are rarely that simple in the comic world, and it always comes down to getting some media hype to prop up sells for a few more months. So fuck it.

In the comics, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman form the trinity. When Wonder Woman reminded everyone she's technically a warrior first, and a PG-Princess 2nd and killed some asshole because it was the most logical thing to do, it actually made for some really interesting reads, I thought. I actually started reading every Wonder Woman comic I could find, but then naturally dc fucked it all up by having her go on a "I feel so bad, please forgive me!" trip for a few months. Bleh

Anyway. Introducing a relationship into the trinity would seriously fuck up the entire dynamic, so yeah, that is probably what they're going to do. Goddammit. Soap opera stuff is fine and all, but the major super heroes need to avoid the constraints of being hitched. Shit just does not work outside of minis or like fanfiction.

People like to point to the Fantastic Four, but take a look at their history. A shit ton of the storylines revolve around Reed either a) dying, b) disappearing, c) not giving a fuck, and d) Invisible Woman getting all hot and bothered by Namor (and who can blame her? Dude kicks more ass then anyone else. Why the hell can't he keep a monthly? Fucking Marvel.)

Uh. Anyway. Marriage is bad. Anyone in the trinity hooking up would cause enough of an uproar that it couldn't be meta'd away so cleanly. I forgot which DC head said it, but it was something like "That's what Elseworlds is for."

On the otherhand, Lois and Bats? Shit, Wonder woman and Lois? That'll get you some sales, DC.

Well, he can travel through time, and I heard somewhere that he can also throw fire projectiles, but that isn't listed on the Wikipedia page. In the beginning he could run just past the speed of sound. Now he can run fast enough to travel through time.

See, you're not alone. If anything needs to be changed, it's that Batman needs to FINALLY get an official relationship, either with Wonder Woman (like the cartoon hinted) or with Catwoman.

DC, if you break up the ONLY couple that has survived the horrors of comic book romance (Green Arrow and Black Canary, Starfire and Nightwing, Raven and Beast Boy, Donna Troy and her husband, Spider Man and Mary Jane, Cyclops and Jean in The Last Stand) then I will hate you for the rest of my life. Why is it that comic writers seem to think that having any long lasting relationship--not just marriage--is something that drags a character down? Idiots.
Batman should not get an actual relationship because that would go completely against his character. His schtick is that he fights his problems on his own and uses his immense willpower to block out sexual desires. That's what makes him a badass. Taking that away would make him infinitely less interesting.

Either the whole thing turns out to be temporary or we've got ourselves a new Gwen Stacey moment...

What era would that get us in? Copper Age?

Maybe they are changing him to Souperman, he derives his powers from different kinds of soup. And since it's the heat of battle, he doesn't have time to wait for it to cook so he has to eat it raw.

Maybe it's the idea that they are a happily married couple. With divorce rates as high as they are, maybe they are thinking "If I can't have a successful marriage, then neither can Superman!". Or maybe they read the Man of Steel vs the Woman of Kleenex essay from a while back and thought "Hmm."

Did they ever explain why Flash's bones don't disintegrate from the impact force every time he punches someone at supersonic velocities?
Yeah, Speed force.

In actual Medical terms: Deus ex machina. I know when they had a crossover with Marvel, Flash is freaking useless. Steel needed to build him a battery so he could fight over at marvel side.
What crossover are we talking about?
And at least he's a proper speedster. Quicksilver my ass.

I wonder how many people complaining about this actually read Superman. It isn't really a particularly big seller in DC's stable of books.

From the interview with Grant Morrison I saw over at comic vine, this doesn't look so much like OMD (thank God) as just a chance to revamp Superman's origins for the new continuity. It is Action Comics #1 after all. That would fit with what has been said by DC so far about what they're doing to the DCU, this isn't a full reboot but a chance to streamline and redesign things.

Bad DC! No Scooby snacks for you!. I'm more of a Batman fan than a Superman fan but unless its an alternative universe or something Clark and Lois are meant to be.

Dodgey new costumes, breaking up perhaps the most important established couples in comics, what the hell is wrong with DC?

They are breaking up Superman and Lois Lane because of legal issues, apparently 2012 is the year that they loose the rights to some of Superman's mythos (which includes his marriage).

Either way i am not heart-broken, Grant Morrison taking over can only be a good thing, seeing as he made the quintessential man of steel with All-star Superman.

In the case of Spider-man, it did. After so and so many years of the same old routine (can't count how many times Spider-man had one of those "oh my wife is everything to me" corny-ass moments), it kind of got tired and stale seeing the same dialogue and stories pan-out. The Spidey that we got after One More Day was leagues ahead of the old one in terms of supporting cast, story, dialogue and just plain FUN.

Marriage, in terms of comic-book stories, often times falls into a continuing cycle of "oh no something has come up and my relationship is in danger" and "i wuvvv you", so Superman breaking up with Lois Lane is not the end of the world.
