Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the giant robots wrecking shit up more equivalent with the sex in porn? It basically triggers the same stimuli.
I'm a broken record when it comes to bashing this film, but the very last thing I have to say about it is that I don't see anything clever, smart or subversive in first telling a coherent story fairly well, and then pulling six megatonnes of stuff out of your ass to poorly tell a new story.

This was a trend that happened after the rise of Super Robot which showed their child characters as stable and eternally virtuous. Eva and Gundam Wing were considered two of the animes that help deconstruct this trend to show what would actually happen if a child was thrown in a war: mental degradation or despair followed by less optimistic but still positive outlook.PedroSteckecilo said:

I think Anno is more jaded than purely hateful of his fans and given the fact that the series ending resulted in vandalism of Gainax and death threats, he has every right to be jaded. A theory I have is that a lot of the scenes in End of Eva are his way of sticking a middle finger to the otaku community at the time: the hospital scene was an illustration of how male otaku objectify female charcters and Shinji's rejection of instrumentality showing how many otaku don't improve (see End of Evangelion and the Audience/author membrane [http://chezapocalypse.com/episodes/s3e2-end-of-evangelion-and-the-audience-author-membrane/] for more information)Shadow-Phoenix said:

I kinda have mixed feelings about Neon Genesis Evangelion. Yes, I like how it pretty much deconstructs the giant mech anime genre, but then it gets all philosophical and confusing... and then there's End of Evangelion.
Apparently, this was a middle finger to fans who complained about the ending apparently to the point of sending Hideaki Anno death threats (Jesus Christ! Priorities people!) And while I like seeing crazy fans put in their place... you'd think there was a better way of handling it...
Now we have the Rebuild series, and the latest film, which is very polarizing. I like that the movie shows the consequences of Shinji's actions, but the direction the story goes is a bit much. I can understand why everyone would blame him for what happened, but the viewers get an outside perspective of what happened. No, the biggest problem of the film for me is that it feel's like we're backsliding in terms of theme and mood.
