Ah, another "New coke" maneuver being tried by Capcom and Ninja Theory.

I'll expect them to bring back the "Old Dante" after this game tanks.

Pesonally I'm glad they changed him.

In the first DMC he was a cold serious fighter with a bad past and felt really cool to play.

In DMC 2 they kept the character going and made another great game......

Then DMC 3 came along and portrayed him as some cocky little shit who seemed to transfer his seriousness into his brother Virgil.

When DMC4 came to town I lost all love for the guy as he was now just some smart arse twat with a penchant for breaking down into sad little drama class acts. Hell they didn't even balance it out with some other serious character, instead they grabbed another hand full of grade A teen angst, mixed it together with some smart arse remarks, snorted it all up and used the delerium they induced to create NERO who's only good point was that he had a demonic arm (though I bet you anything he cut it in his spare time between chapters).

So frankly in my opinion any change is a good change to Dante unless they simply make yet another Angsty little teen emo with a big sword game.

While I'm not particularly a fan of the new Dante look, I can respect their choice to make something completely new and go in a fresh and creative direction...

...however, doing it just to piss off people is low.

Capcom...I am disappoint.

Unfortunately, the fact that Capcom and/or Ninja Theory have decent public relations tactics does not sell me on the critical quality of the incoming game.

If you revamp your main character's entire design for a quick controversial, knee-jerk reaction from fans, then you've got your priorities in the wrong place.

I remain unimpressed.

I love it when a game company trolls its public every now and then.

Capcom's right. It keeps things from getting boring.

Keeps things like a white haired devil hunter in a red trenchcoat, or a blue hedgehog that runs really fast, or vehicles that transform into robots, from becoming far too serious business for their own good.

I honestly didn't know Devil May Cry was the sort of venerable, revered, long-lived franchise that would have so many fans crying at the slightest bit of change. Maybe I'm just not noticing the passage of time; I don't think 90's music is "classic" yet. How old is DMC, anyway?

Right now, I expect CAPCOM are like:

The change in design is unexpected, but it doesn't really bother me that much.
In Japanese media, it's pretty common for badass characters to start out as dislikable brats, only to "man the hell up" due to shocking or life changing circumstances.

Svensson said not to expect any major changes to Dante's design before the game launches either, at least not until the end of the game. "This is meant to be an origin story,"
Whoo Hoo! Thank God! I was worried it was nothing BUT a publicity stunt.

I am not afraid to stand up and say that I really love the reboot.

I can understand why lots of people don't, although I can't quite wrap my mind around the intensity of all the negativity... especially when Svensson has all but guaranteed that the Dante we know best WILL return eventually.

I like a teen Dante that makes stupid mistakes, has a youthful attitude problem and through the game we see him grow out of it and towards the man we know. Scrawny body? Youth. Black-and-red coat instead of red? A precursor.

All the changes in DMC just seem... reasonable. And fun! I can't wait.

That's true. And isn't one of the big complaints that apparently the new Dante isn't "Japanese" enough?

Plus, "White Haired Pretty Boy" is iconic, along with his red jacket. I actually wouldn't mind "dark haired heroin addict" if it wasn't Dante, most wouldn't.
You definitely had some points in your whole post, but I didn't want to quote too much and make this post huge. And, well, this is the bit I wanted to respond to.

You're right. It's kind of an issue that this new design is supposed to be Dante himself but then another part of the problem is the more vocal fans, I think. Remember the reaction when Nero was revealed as the new protagonist? Then again, if this Dante was a separate character, that would make a little more sense this time around; Nero's design pretty much looked like a younger Dante (similar white hair, red coat look) so it did seem a bit needless. Not that saying this redesign is Dante helped shut the fans up at all...

Either way, I simply think the new look is still a bit interesting but whether I really like it or not will probably rely on this Dante's personality... and if the game's decent, of course.

Riiight.

How to make yourself look good when you make a mistake and it backfires in your face? Pretend it was your goal all along.
Hopefully, you will fool everyone into beleiving it, hence making sure they will give you their money anyway.

"part of the reason for the radical new look was to shock people into talking about Devil May Cry again."
Yeah, sure. Make it worse so people complain; free publicity!
Marketing genius at work!

Weak defense of a poor design choice. I am quite curious to see if they wuss out and change it back in the end.

Really?

Dante changed drastically from DMC to DMC2. He became quiet, he made decisions with a double head coin and they changed his jacket to a sort of vest and tails combo.

DMC and DMC3 Dante are much similar, he was supposed to be cocky in 3 because that's what all the fans loved about him and the fact that he wasn't cocky in DMC2 was a main criticism.

DMC3 is often regarded as the best game. It kept the well known Dante with increased over the top moments and combined it with a refined combat system that introduced the combat styles allowing people to play as they wished.

DMC2 is also generally regarded as the worst DMC game.

It's the same game just a different character model. I'm sure everyone will adjust and accept the new Dante out of necessity.

It doesn't really bother me that Capcom is making excuses for upsetting their fanbase. What bothers me is that they redesigned a very original, badass character into a boring, cliche, 'everyone does it' whino.

Take old Dante and you can't really compare him to other well-known characters.

Take new Neo, er, Dante and you can compare him to every other well-known character out there.

If only they would have made him fat with greasy hair and pimples then people could welcome a truly original design, but then it would have been far too liked.

I love this whole scene they have created and if their marketing idea is factual they won. Either way I found DMC to be far too pristine and Gackt-tastic for my taste and like the direct they are moving in.
I actually like the design. I actually want to play the game now. I would rather be a filthy, lame, emo kid than a saucy pretty boy because I like the dichotomy between someone who seems downtrodden kicking ass. The old Dante fit the showing "I'm so bad-ass" role too well and it was stagnant.

TL;DR version:
I like this new Dante because he isn't a fat nerd[sic: something actually original] or a showy white haired cock-tease.
