Out of the Past

Mitchum is a detective hired by a gangster to track down some dame who took off with 40k. He falls for her and they go on the lam, but she double-crosses him when things get tight. Time passes and the gangster and the moll pull him back in from the quiet life for another job, or maybe it's revenge, or maybe they need a patsy, or all of the above. The Macguffins are boring (some incriminating papers and an affidavit) but that's the least of it. Not as clean cut Hitchcockian film noir as Double Indemnity, more in the vein of convoluted detective stories like The Big Sleep and a little bit of Kiss Me Deadly though not so nightmarish.

Just watched the Mario movie. It's not great, by any means, but I was entertained throughout, and had a few good laughs, which was about all I really expected from the movie, and I thought that the voice acting was surprisingly solid throughout the entire film. I'd be down for more Nintendo movies, at the very least.

Sisu: Really Good / Great

A Finnish man, ex-military, tries to avoid involvement in the on-going contest of WWII by living the solitary life of a gold miner when Nazis show up in his remote area and attempt to steal his substantial find. Those same Nazis soon learn that sometimes it's best to let seemingly low-hanging fruit just hang low...

John Wick, Jason Bourne, Equalizer fans? Sign up. This was a fun (and very graphic) ride.
Sisu
Now this is what I'm talking about, aw yeah- an old dude murders the crap out of a bunch of Nazis, the end. Rambo meets Inglorious Basterds meets the Northman. The river scene alone in 10/10.
Yes, the river scene was insane. Of all the most gangster ways to kill a man, that has got to be #1 by a mile and a half. You'd have thought after that, the Nazis would have fucked all the way off, but then again, they were Nazis, so rationale, reason, and common sense were likely listed as "areas of opportunity" on their resume.

Pisciiiiiaaaans hot takes!

Super Mario bros 6/10

Ive decided as of this weekend all movies start 10/10 and lose a point every time I lose interest and check my phone for messages. I got bored 4 times -

1.mario learning to jump
2. The bowser song
3. kart racing
4. any time Cranky kong talks

I made some notes.

  • Jack black sucks as bowser, hes just not menacing, at all.
  • Anya Taylor joy - I love her but peaches dialog was as emotional as a two dsy old wet sock.
  • Cranky kong should have been larry david, no ifs ands or butts. I heart Fred, but he was awful.
On the flip side everyone else was great. I think seth rogan was fine for Kong, but tbh honest I think ot would have been a better film if theyd just let Rogan snd his team write the script and edit out all thr adult stuff. This film felt like all the fun got sanitized out.

A Hidden Life on Youtube TV: FX

Terrence Malick provides another lyrical exploration piece, this time about an Austrian farmer who refuses to serve in the Nazi army. There are consequences to himself and his family.

At about 3 hours it is a trial. But if you stick with it, it is an amazing piece of work. He juxtaposes staggering horror with the gorgeousness that is reality, human existence.

Much of his film makes the viewer feel as if they are a living, breathing character in the scene with his characters.

It is also gobsmaking to think that people lived like this in the 1st world only 80 years ago. The horror. The beauty. The suffering. The living.

Hard to grade in that this is not an "entertainment". It is art.

Come on. Three movies to go !
I actually ran into technical issues. Namely, something smashing into my TV and breaking it. I'm working on trying to figure out a set up to get my Blu-Ray player hooked up to my computer monitor, but finding the physical space for the player itself on my computer desk is a bit tricky.

Computers don't have DVD/Blu-Ray drives anymore ? But anyway, yeah, I'd say take your time. Better wait for a new TV and make it a comfy living room watch again, this isn't work...

I watched this a few years ago at a festival. Great movie.

(If mine was custom-built, it'd feature a floppy drive. 😬 )
You'd be searching far and wide for a case with the front panel layout to accomodate one. Most custom cases haven’t had a slot for those in over a decade, and Optical drive bays are currently an endangered species.

You can get bay adapters and, if you have access to a 3D printer making a new bezel for the panel isn't hard, BUT you're gonna need some cable adapters - notably a IDE-to-SATA ribbon and possibly something for the power.*

Much, much, much, did I mention much?, much simpler to just buy an external USB FDD.

Come to think of it, also much easier to have an external USB optical drive on a PC these days.

*Of course this assumes the case has front facing 5.25" bays and bezels/panels... if not it geta a lot, lot, lot more challenging.

Least fun of the three. They went all in on sentimentality and animal torture porn with only bits and pieces of what made the first - and to lesser extent second - one so good. Understandable to an extent, but these movies aren’t designed to be this heavy and it wound up feeling about a hour too long. Then the ending does an about-face and everyone’s saved and having a good old time. Also just how the bloody hell did Peter survive a bloated frozen space face. Eh, I’m thinking too much, which is the first problem.

Still bloody fun, and I had a hell of a time. The movie hit the right feels for me.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, but it had a lot of dissonant moments to me. For example Peter going on about not solving problems with violence and killing, only to have an all out murder spree set to feel good tunes near the end felt jarring. It seemed like the movie couldn't really decide what direction it wanted to go, so it did some of everything. Some parts were overdone.

It's good this run was wrapped up, but I'm still curious to see where it goes next though, after the final post credits scene.

When your villains comprise of jerk offs doing cruelty testing to animals and people, all those feelings go out the wind. I get what you mean, something tells me James Gunn was in on the joke. People can't say Marvel can't be serious (and done right), when they want to meet or can. I actually appreciate it. I know it's going to be your mileage might be very, but I full hardly enjoyed the movie, and every note hit for me. As for the after credits, I really don't care. As far as I'm concerned: it's over. Moving on to other things now. I'm excited for Spider Verse 2 now. It comes out this week.

Space technology. Or Adam Warlock’s funky powers. Take your pick.

Across the Spider-verse was fucking great. There was just so much to unpack. All the love and care that went into the first movie is still here, and more.

I do have a few negatives, but they're all spoilers.

1. The movie ends of a cliffhanger. I already knew it was a Part 1 of sorts, but I totally forgot that until the very end. It is frustrating, and I see a lot of people taking issue with it. I know it's a cliche at this point, but this movie did feel very much like an Empire Strikes Back kinda sequel.

2. Since I did forget it was a Part 1, I kept thinking to myself that this movie is really long. Not so much that it was draggy (although that would be a fair criticism), but I was confused why it was taking this long when we were so far from a conclusion.

3. I wasn't the biggest fan of bringing in real world actors. Like... just straight live action footage. The Venom thing was really, really bad.

The good, however, is just so much. Everything just comes together so fucking well, which is ridiculous when the whole movie is literally about mashing completely different universes together. The voice acting is stellar, they can hit jokes perfectly one scene and deliver incredibly emotional lines the other. The voice acting is made even better by the animation, which somehow seamlessly blends classic cartoony animation with almost motion cap levels of realistic human movement. The art style (or should I say styles) are top notch. This is corny, but this is genuine art. The soundtrack relied a lot less heavily on existing songs (as far as I can tell), which I really appreciated.

I think I'll just stop here, because every time I think of something good, I get reminded of something else good and I'll spend all night typing. Narratively, I'd still say Into was better, but as an overall experience, Across really blew my expectations away.
