District 9 is one of my favorite films of last year. I was hoping they wouldn't do a sequel, mainly because I don't think they could do the original enough justice. However, the fact that Neil Blomkamp wants to do this and has a few ideas for a sequel or prequel, then I'm not totally adverse to it. I just hope that it doesn't turn out to be a cheap cash grab. I just personally hope that the story turns out to be just as solid as the first, or at least as engaging.

I loved District 9 for the sheer intelligence behind the script, although the apartheid theme was hardly subtle. Overall it was for me one of the best films in years, which makes me cringe at the idea of an inferior sequel, which unfortunately has been the case with almost every sequel or remake of a film I have loved. However, fingers crossed (again)
The keyword is almost!
Seeing as it would be his third major movie, I don't think Blomkamp can afford to mess it up, nor do I think he will.

Peter Jackson and company have, as Moviebob said, never made a bad movie. I am cautiously optimistic about a sequel to D9.
I take it you have not yet seen The Lovely Bones. If indeed so, don't bother, it broke his track record.

I know I was not the only one who wanted to stand up and cheer when Venter was dismembered and killed. Cannot wait for the sequel.

How did noone see this coming? The first one ended on an obvious sequel hook or two. Hang on.

Christopher Johnson said that he would return in three years, a reasonable time for a sequel to be produced and lo and behold it has, and with reinforcements. Boom, you have your setup.

The new alien residence is called "District 10", so boom, you have your title.
"christopher johansen"
"Christopher Johnson".

District 9 is my 3rd favourite film (behind Hot Fuzz and PotC: Deam Man's Chest)...I will definitely see the sequel in the cinemas (didnt get the chance to see D9 in cinemas unfortunately)

Im guessing itll be called District 10 because at the end of D9, all the prawns were evicted to their new home (District 10)

I hope they stay with the original concept, not that it takes place in the future and humanity has to struggle against a 'civil uprising' of these things.

Yeah, I need to see the first one first. Waiting for DVD's takes long...
it hasnt come out on dvd? came out on Blu-ray awhile ago.

That sounds like an interesting idea...
I really enjoyed District 9, and it was probably my favourite film of 2009, but I'm not sure how a sequel would work, though I'm sure they could work something out that makes sense.

I'll keep an eye out for this, because it looks pretty interesting, though I can see it possibly heading the wrong way early on, so I'll keep tabs on it.

@Tom Goldman: You still haven't given me those pictures of the nintendo chairs from GDC...

Sequels are almost never as good as the originals, but they do not, in my opinion, dilute the experience or somehow negate how intelligent and interesting they are. The original will always be great, even if they release a not-so-good sequel. You just have to try to filter the sequel out.

With that said, I hope they can give a repeat performance and come up with something fairly original, intelligent, interesting, and fun to watch.

Very interesting they are waiting the same length of time to release this as Christopher and his son promised they would return. Possible long drawn out viral or something?

I hope the plot doesn't go into clique "revenge" mode...

How would the "Prawns" even reign down that much hell if their supposed to be from a dying or very weak planet?

I doubt anyone who saw this film cared more about the "BOOOM KEKEKEKEKKEKEKEK" than the emotional story it told....Alien battles are for Star Wars

I think I'm the only one who didn't care for this movie...particularly after it was so hyped up. The background was stolen from the much better done Alien Nation, the plot was too ridiculous to suspend disbelief. The hero wasn't appealing at all and the action wasn't exciting. The stupid robot suit did BETTER when it was on autopilot...

Oh please let this be true. District 9 ended at a good point and a bit of a cliffhanger. I really would like to see that story progress and see if Christopher keeps his promise.

I thoroughly enjoyed the original. Never been sure that it needed a sequel though. The end of the film was an interesting mixture of hope and fear.

District 9 is like the new Terminator, the first movie came out of nowhere and was a great film with an insanely cheap budget. Now, lets continue the trend with an absolutely amazing sequel.

I am skeptical that this can outshine the original since District 9 was one of the few truly excellent sci-fi stories of the 21st century and didn't suffer from obvious flaws like another of the stories did (I'm referring to Equilibrium by the way, which had an excellent premise but the directing and acting messed things up). I mean, some sequels are better than the original, though this can be rare in film and is more common with games, but with such a brilliant film its hard to imagine something truly amazing to be spawned from it without it feeling like the duller of the two gems.
