People from Canada are nicer than the people here in New York, I have never had a problem with them and tend to like Canada more than America sometimes.

I'm American and I love our neighbors to the north, so many awesome things come from Canada, how could I not like them?

Speaking of awesome things from Canada.

Thank you, Canada.

TO DATE I have never heard anyone say "about" "aboot" unless they were doing it ironically.

In anycase, most Americans I talk to love to make fun of us but don't actually hate us. We're too awesome for that.
(American here) I love canada, but that doesn't put you in the safe zone for jokes, i crack all kinds of nationality jokes all the time

do i mean them? hell no

do i hate canadians? quite the opposite.

the only time i've ever come in to contact with disliking canadians, was when we played a team from there in a soccer game, and "sore losers" was an understatement.

We Americans could never hate you Canada, you are the coolest hat anyone has ever had the pleasure of having. Why would we give you up?

...

All kidding aside, America in my opinion has always seemed to have a much closer bond with Britain rather than Canada. Britain is a father nation to both America and Canada, and when hostilities between "Father and son" ended after the War of 1812 America and Britain have been stable trading partners for almost 200 years, helped save the world from oppression in World War II, and helped shape the political and military environment of the world together after World War II during the Cold War. Canada in the eyes of America is like a distant brother that he never interacts with much outside of limited cultural exchange and for money (Canada is currently one of our biggest trading partners), while Britain is the Dad that we want to spend time with because we have accomplished more together.

It is not that we dislike Canada and its citizens, we just need to accomplish more together as Military, Political, and Business partners for America to appreciate what Canada means to us. Personally though I do recognize Canada's importance as an ally to America, World War II in particular showed how you could fight with the big boys easily enough, but I will always find humor in the jokes that we can make about Canada as we can't always take ourselves too seriously. America's insanity in particular could be ragged on all day but we mean well at the end of the day, so don't get mad at your big brother if he slaps ya around and makes a few jokes at your expense.

I find myself slightly offended, being a Canadian in this thread. I find it very strange how many people in America think of Canada as the "little brother" country. Considering how much America seems to value the outcomes of wars you'd think they would remember what role Canada has played in the two world wars... beyond that I believe our politics are quite a bit more sensible than our southern friends. In any case, yes I do get milk in bags and spell things with "u" in them... so there you go.
I'm second this, it's pretty much how I'm feeling right now, not really offended just a little put out.

I've also spent half my life outside of Canada and have been asked about pretty much every stereo-type you can find. Had "Blame Canada" sung in the corridor between every class for about a month, I just embraced it instead of getting offended, I think I cracked more Canadian jokes than anyone in the school.

There is an underhanded sinister aspect to our niceness though which I wholeheartedly love.

Lets be honest though, we are all just sitting up here sharpening are knives and trapping the moose, wolves and bears so we can unleash them on the unsuspecting Americans.

I was watching some American news reports on Afghanistan and to hear them tell it you'd think only the US were defending the country, the UK got an offhand mention but all I could think watching that was what about the locals, or the other countries with a military presence here.

Also the Americans seem to have forgotten about their failed invasion attempt...

I don't think anyone dislikes Canada, besides them generally being okay, a ton of very sexy models, actresses and porn stars are all from Canada. So I for one have no issue with Canada or Canadian women. They do wonderful things to my bacon.

I'm an American and I like Canadians. One of my good friends moved here from Canada. Also, when I was on vacation in Victoria, the people were very friendly.

Also, Deadpool is one of my favorite characters...

I don't think we dislike Canadians. They're just such an easy target. I mean the accent alone is enough, but add to that the cops that ride horses and the serious business that is hockey, and you've got a joke gold mine!

On the flipside, they did give us Eugene Levy, Jim Carrey, Pam Anderson, and Vancouver (where the Playboy bunnies are born and raised).

It's more of a joke hate for most people. We just like to call them backwards and make fun of them for saying words like "about" differently.

EDIT: I'm aware that Canadians don't say "aboot", but from spending lots of time in Canada I can say that most pronounce it "Abouoot" as opposed to the more American "Abowt".
I bet other people have probably asked you this (even in this same thread), but where are the Canadians you've heard say "Abouoot" from? Because I've lived in B.C. all my life and never heard anyone say it in any way other than "Abowt"... that is aside from people doing impressions of Canadian accents.

I don't get the "cops that ride around on horses" idea. RCMP look like this:

They only use horses in riot situations which is the same thing as in the U.S.A..

I generally find that there is a good chunk of the US population who are just so darned sure they are the best thing ever and will put anything at all down, although i think there is a sizable chunk of Canadians who have a very strong "okay, we may be bad, but at least we aren't America" vibe to them as well. For the most part though I think its just fun to poke fun.

Those darned American's Shattner stealing Mexico touchers the lot of 'em.

Oh, and the Aboot thing is part of the newfie dialect, from the east coast.

Americans who hate Canadians are idiots. I've met several American xenophobes in my life, and none of them even believed me when I told them I was Canadian.

And, from what I can tell by living in America for 5 years, no, hardly anyone hates Canadians - like someone said before, its more of a curious fascination with the insignificant differences in our otherwise identical cultures.

As a native U-S-of-A'n for all my life, I've not seen much hatred. Canada is more like the calm dude with an apartment across the way from you who you see on laundry day, and he's always quite friendly and says hello and asks how you're doing, but you never hang out or get to know each other much beyond that superficial capacity. And, sure, you may crack a joke at his expense with your roommates who see him in the same mysterious light, but it's all in good fun and you don't mean to hurt anybody.

So Canada's pretty much cool for most Americans.

Hell, a lot of Americans claim to be Canadian when they travel.
I don't think that is love for Canada on the part of the Americans in question, that started in the Vietnam war when admitting to being American became something of a social faux pas in Europe.
