if u have not heard the news, James Cameron has annouced he will be making an avatar sequel. The question is: Can the story go anywhere from here? The story of avatar was decent and it seemed final at the end. I can't possibly think of a good sequel to the movie with a good story. So when he makes the sequel will it be good? Bad? And where the hell is the story suppost to go from here? the planet getting a tumor or getting hit by an astroid?
NO avatar was absolutely boring and had a sloppy unoriginal story, I don't want a sequel, but as everyone shoved their wallets down Camerons throat I'm positive we'll have sequel(s) and prequel(s). And there are plenty of paths the movie can take, which actually might fill the plothole of *If the humans are forced to leave the planet by the blue smurfs whats keeping them from just bombing the planet from orbit, and what kept them from doing that long before, and how did a bunch of retreating smurfs after a battle with a platoon of marines suddenly take over an entire military base?*

It doesn't matter, any story can be given to these smurfs in space and people will come running with money in hand to see it, quite literally Cameron could make some new space threat of evil aliens that spread like a disease using the bodies of organisms to reproduce its breed of xenomorphic space monsters. At least then it will be a movie I might see as when I was in the theater watching Avatar the only thing that made the experience enjoyable was daydreaming that this could spawn Aliens 5 with Ripley kicking more @ss

But... its over. The world was pretty, and the characters were...present. Unless the Humans attack again or it is in fact a prequel (tried with the game and failed miserably) then it will just seem like a cash-in. Cameron should go out and find some other magical adventure land to blow up.

Some people think sequels are cursed. But you have to look at the good ones. Terminator 2 was quite good. Star Trek 2:Wrath of Khan. Spider-Man 2.

The Empire Strikes back can be called a sequel, because George had no idea if Star Wars was going to be successful enough to warrant one. Which is why the movie has closure, and the original title simply read "Star Wars" in the opening crawl. Same with Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Predator 2. Aliens. Bad Boys 2, if you don't hate Michael Bay.

Although I'm not sure where Avatar would go with a sequel. Give it a shot, I guess. More than 1.8 billion dollars seems to indicate a hit.

No, because I haven't seen Avatar because I trying to stay as far away from mainstream as possible.

I know I am being biased but I don't give a fuck

Of course it can be continued, the humans were not killed but chased back to earth, the big pile of metal is still under the remains of the giant tree and mankind hasn't learned the "we need to take care of nature"-thing.

But do we need it? NO!!! The first one was a horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE piece of cinema.
If you think that was horrible, what do you think of Michael Bay?

I always try to stay at least ten feat away from mainstream, but this was a James Cameron movie, which is the only reason why I saw it. I found it better than the trailers.

Yes it should and it should just be an Assassin's Creed style movie with lots of running and climbing and stabbing having nothing to do with the first *Maniacal Laughter*

No. No. No. No. No.

A sequel to Avatar is a bad idea... sure they want more money but I mean, it's not set around anything. The credibility will be ruined if it rips another story, and if it doesn't, the story will probably be awful.

It's easy you just have the United states government invade with bionic bald eagles that play "America Fuck Yeah" loudly while the navi get their asses kicked. The moral is that we may not be very respectful but we have big enough guns to not care.

Did we even need the first one?

EDIT: well, I got a forum warning for this, so I'll think I'll expand my post.

While Avatar looked great, and the action-y bits were fun, overall, it did nothing much for the world of cinema entertainment. A pretty bad story that can't go anyway now that the first movie is over, and having anything like a prequel wouldn't be great seeing as the humans hadn't made a major offensive, and the Na'vi hadn't entrusted anyone from the humans into their ranks.
Obviously you havnt watched it. The main Characters get alowed into the Na'vi Ranks. Jake Sulley, he goes through the Na'vi manhood training and then becomes one of the people and the others are all alowed in. The trusted stay on pandora and the other humans got sent back.

OT: A sequel in my opinion wont work, i cant see any further plot development from here. a Prequel would work though... Either way, im going to go and see it

No. I don't think we need a sequel. Same reasons why District 9 doesn't need a sequel.
District 9 actually could use a sequel. Unlike Avatar, District 9 let the story wide open for a sequel. "Remember 3 years."

Avatar, well, story-wise I of course see opportunities (humanity wanting revenge, the Na'vi developing and dealing with inner struggle about what direction to go, think Industrial Revolution or incorporating left-over human technology), but I'd feel rather forced I think, it ended pretty conclusively.

Cameron isn't bad with sequels though, so I'm very curious how he'll handle things. Already looking forward to it out of sheer curiosity.

This. Fuck the Na'vi, we know what to expect, now we can send in the real Space Marines!
I propose a Warhammer 40K and Avatar cross-over. Purge the alien!!

the story for avatar was very generic and they have admitted that the 3d movie sells are what made it surpass titanic so quickly in the sells. we all know this movie is the revenge of the native americans and what they wish did happen to the pale faces. the good ones stay, the bad ones leave. there are obviously many options for sequel stories, but are there any options that actually have any originality or at least give an new interesting perspective on past ideas?Basically i'm saying if it's gonna be a rip off story, will it be a good rip off story?
