It was my understanding that the escapist was all gifted people with no retards compared to other forums. I believe I calculate more than the average of my age.

estimated I.Q. of 173

that being said i'm actually pretty lazy and don't really use much of my potential...in other words i know i'm smart but so what?
An IQ of 173 puts you in the top 99.9999431733% of everyone in the world, meaning that you are among (approximately) the smartest 3800 people on the planet. Not to be rude, but I would recommend double-checking the validity of the test you have taken.
I'm perfectly aware of where it puts me. I'm not trying to brag or anything but that is my IQ.

I'm what is know as a lazy genius. Its entirely possible that i just test unusally well but i can learn and process information very easily...i just don't do anything with it.

I think i am a bit smarter than the average person of my age but my laziness kind of prevents me from being a lot smarter than the average person.

Personally I believe there's far too many definitions of intelligence for someone to consider themselves so. If I talk with some civility on a forum (like this *wink wink*) it doesn't make me any more intelligent than if I da1k l1k3 diz. Too many definitions and we as humans like to think of ourselves as smarter than the average bear far too much.

See? I just wrote a small thesis on human intelligence! And I still don't think of myself as any more intelligent than I was years ago. And if I did there's no way I'd openly admit it and nullify my entire previous argument. It just doesn't work that way.

Actually, being pretentious simply means you have a very high opinion of yourself and you're not shy about letting other people know it. Having this high opinion of yourself and outwardly expressing it, whilst simultaneously not living up to your own hype, is just a more hyperbolic example of pretension.

The fact that you are doing a PhD in Chemistry doesn't change the fact that what you said sounded pretentious.

But what the other guy said sounded pretty pretentious in it's own right. Which makes him a pretentious hypocrite. Even worse. XD

I on the other hand? I'm just a twat who likes to bust chops.
While I realize I deserve a bit of a chop busting for the above exchange, you ought to look up the definition of pretentious more closely - people most commonly use it in the way that you have described but its slightly different. Kinda like how nothing in the Alanis Morisette song is actually ironic!

OP: you're an exception, because most people consider themselves more intelligent than those around them, even if they don't admit it.

lol, quote battle. I don't think you understand how satirical my post was. especially the very last part that you held onto to comment on math skills I supposedly implied. I could have just as easily wrote science or whatever else the learned folk talk about <- See I'm a peasant now.
Also your use of Ego maniacal was a bit harsh, I didn't see it as that I was giving an example of how I could be lead to believe I'm above average, a fallacy.
I like the "you don't know me!" defense as well, Don't see that enough these days

I got straight honors in high school, and commonly dean's list in college, so I'd say so. Nothing wrong with being stupid tough, it doesn't make you a bad person.

I'm intelligent enough to get into a good school and, so far, I've been successful in my work towards a chemistry major. I'm no Einstein or Hawking, but I think I've performed good enough for my expectations.

Without wanting to sound up myself, I'm well educated and also have quite a technical job. I'd say I'm quite intelligent. Not the smartest of people, but I certainly like to think I know my onions!

As with a thousand other things, I consider the conversation of intelligence on the internet one of specific skill sets. Forums are great places for some debate, but not all. There are plenty of us here who know more about Warhammer than Bob McDobb knows about Wing Commander. We all have our specific subset skills and knowledge tickers, but for the most part we're just like anyone else.

We know a specific set of things based upon our interests. At times we find it easy and simple to voice our opinion to those who understand the same set of things, other times we have to dumb ourselves down to explain it to others not of the same knowledge.

I don't consider myself intelligent to any sort of degree past what I know. I can't tell you who played 2nd Wide Receiver on the 2003 Detroit Lions team, but I can tell you the name of that guy who used to do that thing in that movie you're talking about.

Yes. That one. It was Harvey Keitel.

Academically, I would consider myself rather intelligent (as I have written proof that I am to an extent), however; in terms of common sense and whatnot, I would say average, maybe slightly above.

I'm extremely hard on myself and most of the time I question my intelligence or even basic aptitude.
But, I can recognise that with self-depreciation set aside, I can be fairly sure I'm well above average.

I think I'm intelligent. Not a genius, but somewhat above average.

I think you are mistaking Intelligence and Wisdom. As any D&D/dictionary fan could tell you, intelligence is just general reasoning and problem solving skills. Wisdom is the synonym for knowledge.

Yeah, me too. People often tell me that I'm pretty damn smart, but I sure say and do a lot of dumb things.

Fast processor, low memory. I guess.
