I always feel bad in Civ 5. I guess it's the polite *doo doo doooooooo* that makes me feel like I should salute my fallen soldiers :(

Yes, hence why I only tend to fight using "Superunits", Artilley or Aircraft.

If its on an easy difficulty then no, they can be replaced easily. On harder difficulty's all units are valuable. The Arbiter on Halo Wars is a good example. I need him as he is the strongest unit(besides the scarab) and losing him leaves a big gap in my defenses. Good thing is by the time he is fully upgraded he can take on nearly ten hostile units at once.

It varies depending on game and unit. For example, in Battle for Wesnoth, I'll treat losing a level 3 unit as a tragedy, but still call losing a level 1 a problem, because armies are a pain to replenish. By contrast, if I lose a guy in Sacrifice, I just mash the "raise dead" spell/ collect his soul.

Depends on if you can bring them back. I felt pretty bad when I lost Rhys and Mist in Fire Emblem. They were healers! They weren't going to hurt anyone you bastards! *Sniff*
...Yeah...I get pretty attached to my characters...

I feel bad for them if they died a senseless death because I did not pay enough attention and they got into an unsurvivable situation because of this.

Other than that it is ok if they die as long as it helps my longterm goal, for example outflank my enemy or hold up his troops long enough so that I can hit back harder with new troops.

Yeah, and it's one of the reasons I suck at RTS so much. I just don't dare to attack in case my army gets slaughtered. Luckily, less so in Supreme Commander 2, as they're just robots there anyway.

I Play a lot of Total War, and the answer is: Yeah, I do.

But I think it has more to do with the fact that it's expensive and sometimes cumbersome/nearly impossible, to re'fill an army with soldiers, especially when it's deep in enemy territory. Every soldier counts, so each death is a tragedy.

In Battle for Middle Earth 1, the units carried over, you could name them and stuff. I liked them ones.
Oh yeah, I remember that...

I got somewhat attached to the units that I had been keeping for the entire game.

Never. The only honourable way of dying for a Space Marine is on the battlefield!
[sub]If I lose a few marines, paratroopers or any of my units I don't care. I can just whip out another couple of them.[/sub]

In Rome Total Wwar? No. In Dawn of War? yes, I'm playing as the Imperial Guard. I'll lose three Guardsmen and yell "FALL BACK!"
So you yelled fall back on contact then? I love the Imperial Guard, but the numbers dropped faster than a whores pants.

OT: No, not that I can remember anyway. I've recently been playing Eufloria, a game where your units are made automatically over time, and I really don't care for their deaths. In games where I had to spend resources for my units I was only really careful about their cost, even then it was often only when it was a game turning battle.

I used to think that I would get too attach to the unit and would get upset when it get killed before I had a go at playing at that type of game.
However once I did play the game myself I tend to just view them a pawns but I did get upset at one of two units. Example in the game Total Annihilation a unit can aim better when it gain experiences from destorying a enemy unit. One of my unit is a Crasher (a two leged missle lunching mech) who had gain alot of experience so I kept it close to me. However it got killed from a stray shot so I was annoy losing it.

In smaller-scale games like Dawn of War, Starcraft, Warlords: Battlecry, et cetera... absolutely. I really want to take care of my troops. In larger-scale games like Supreme Commander or Sins of a Solar Empire... only if they're an Experimental/Capital Ship or other gigantic unit... or a base. Receiving massive planetary bombardment or huge amounts of incoming artillery makes me feel like millions of people are dying in my name...

Only if I'm playing Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones which is exactly why I don't like that game. I don't want to lose a member I value and either have to restart the mission or just replace him/her. If I had kept playing I would have gone crazy real fast.

Usually, no. But there was this one time, in Age of Mythology...

So, I was playing on a map with a massive lake in the middle. It forced all ground units to loop around to a chokepoint. This one match, I was playing as the Greek God Zeus. My enemies were Norse and Egyptian gods. I had a special unit that got a powerful bonus against Norse and Egyptian units.
So, I saw my enemies were gathering a powerful force. I decided to make 30 of these anti-Egypt/Norse units. I set them up, guarding the chokepoint, as the enemy army marched ever closer. My brave units waited. It was like the movie 300, with 30 units against a massive double army of mythological creatures and soldiers.
And they held them off. It was AMAZING. They stabbed, hacked and slashed to their victory. By the end of it, I had 20 units, but the enemy army was defeated. I was so proud of those guys.

Unfortunately, that's when the siege weapons showed up. Catapults launched, heavy mythological creatures attacked, and my 20 turned to 10. And then they were gone. By then, I could destroy the siege weapons and defeat the enemy. But those brave 30 saved my entire city, and I was devastated by their loss.

They shall be remembered.

Mainly annoyed , especially when barbarians come out of nowhere and kill my scouts in Civ. With teh smaller armies that you field in Civ5 I get a bit worked up losing any of my troops because it slows down my attack and can take a long time to build a replacement and send it to reinforce the rest of the army. Often I find myself hestitating to capture a city if I cannot gurantee not losing a single troop capturing it. But then this is war and somtimes sacrifices have to be made for the glory of the empire.

Depends on the game. In homeworld two I captured a dreadnought way before I was supposed to and had it till the end of the game.

When it died, i had a pang of oh noes
