Funny thing is: A thread like this is made about any new MMO. And the answer always turned out: No.

It doesn't stand a chance to reach WoW-fame, reason... Look up.
Its also on PC...

Actually, it's not. It's going to be on the PC as well and S-E is apparently considering the 360 as well.
Are you guys sure?

Because on Gametrailers they say it's PS3 only.

How ridiculous.... It's an MMO (we assume)... on consoles. Sure, of course it'll do as well as WoW..

And besides, WoW has 11 million subscribers... FF IV would need an attach rate of half the PS3 owners to top that.
Well it will be on PC and more than likely 360 as well...so....yeah.
Really? When Sony stated that it would be exclusive to PS3, I took that as meaning that it would only be on PS3. I suppose you can take your own poetic license to the words 'it will be a PS3 exclusive' if you like.
Think there needs to be a sign on the door to this post "Next person to say PS3 exclusive without reading anything will be stabbed." It's one thing to ask a question about such, but far too many of you just spout off incorrectly.
Here: http://e3.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696163/E3-2009-Square-Enix-Press-Conference-Tons-Of-Final-Fantasy-XIV-Details-Revealed.html

Again: http://www.destructoid.com/e3-09-ffxiv-will-be-coming-to-pc-134576.phtml

Both sources from the Q&A SQE had during E3. Please stop posting false info, that took 3 seconds of google power.

OT: Does it have a shot? Of course it does. There will always be those hardcore FF types, or those anti-WOW types, or just people who want to get in the ground floor of a new MMORPG. It's not necessarily going to take money out of Blizzard's pocket. There will be people who play a game simply for the people they interact with, yet they despise the game after several years. They would gladly go to a new unexplored area as it were. Everyone talks about how hard FF11 was, or that it "sucked" etc, yet you do have to realize that it hung around for several years now and that shows (with 500k playing atm) that there is potential there. Read that first link it talks about the changes they are going for.

That being said I personally just don't have time for this type of game play really anymore. It's a cycle like everything else, there's going to be a new generation or people coming up here making the same mistakes we all did, "Oh hey they call this an MMORPG, I think I'll try it."

The only question is... Does Zeus know about Achilles' heel?

UPDATE: Square Enix has launched a teaser site, which features the trailer shown at the Sony press event (displayed below), and includes the additional information that the game will also be released on the PC.

UPDATE: In a private press conference and Q/A session, Square Enix denied that FFXVI is a PS3 exclusive. Square Enix VP Shinji Hashimoto responded "We are considering all options at this time," via a translator, when asked about a release on the Xbox 360.
It may not even be a console exclusive...

Anyone think that this popular IP has a shot at chipping into market share with a new MMO, or is it doomed to fail?
I hope WoW stabs FFXIV in the back and then get slayed by FFXIV's giant sword so they both die in agony...

It's a shame. World of Waracraft isn't actually THAT good, it's just over-commericalised. Sadly, because of this, nothing could quite match it on a console; the controls and lack of user community would hinder any succession. Although FFIV may be incredible, it wont quite beat WoW

Okay... Thanks.

Also, it's not going to be bigger than WoW, not a chance.

That's very unlikely. Final Fantasy XIV for PS3? Doesn't Final Fantasy XI exists as an MMO?

Can anyone say post-boosting?

Anyway, FFXIV might have a chance with the hardcore crowd who want action and are still dedicated to their games. This isnt a particularly HUGE market like WoW but substantial. WoW on the other hand appeals to all ages with its fairly complex battle system and stylised graphics along with lashings of PvE and some PvP as an afterthought.

If you saw a venn diagram of the two gamertypes, you would not see much joining of the two. It wouldn't be fair to try and compare every game to WoW. Simply because WoW is NOT a game, its a lifestyle to even the most casual of top tier player.

If FFXIV can promise action, a fair price and sticks to its FF Modus Operandi, I personally see no reason why it shouldnt be a huge hit. Everyone I know who plays video games owns a Final Fantasy game.

Anyway, its a bit soon to speculate when only a small amount of information has been released. Lets wait and see how it develops before we start debating properly if its a WoW-Killer.

No, its a PC and PS3 exclusive. Meaning the only platform it won't make it to is 360. It has a chance to do very well.

Sorry but WoW has 11 million people or something like that. Taking that down is like trying on the Death Star with a stick and some yogurt. Its not going to happen...
Actually the deathstar was built with matchstick so thorwing some yogurt at it (provided you get close enough) before chiseling with a stick would breach the hull and thus destroy the deathstar

It's a wrap for WOW. The game got too hot too soon and now with TOR out and FF XIV who in their right mind will still be playing that game besides crack addicts?

I'm going to clarify a few things that seem to be causing a lot of non-argument arguments here.

1. It's going to be available for BOTH the PC and PS3. It's confirmed on the wiki and on the E3 coverage. Google it.

2. WoW is the Cthulu of MMOs. Other MMOs aren't going to destroy it, take it down, whatever, but some people, in large enough groups, that got sick of wow (people like me) being too easy but still want an MMO experience, are going to give this a try. Enough of those people will actually enjoy it enough to keep FFXIV profitable.

3. A note about WoW being too easy: Sub-average players could get the best gear available by simply riding the coat tails of decent players. In a 25 man raid, if you had 4 good players, 6 average players, and 15 scrubs, you could still get through all of the content, at least pre-Ulduar.

4. A note about FFXIV being just a graphically updated version of FFXI: No. Just no. They've done their research. S-E isn't stupid. They will be changing things, removing things people didn't like about FFXI (read: super grindy, loss of XP on death) and putting in more things that people do enjoy. Maybe a heavier PvP focus. Maybe they'll do something really innovative with the professions. Maybe they'll have something that we haven't even seen yet in an MMO.

Regardless, it will be profitable, if not popular, due to the fact that it's an MMO in an established genre and franchise, and it's not WoW. Is it going to kill WoW? Not likely. Is it going to put a noticeable dent in the WoW subscriber base? Doubtful. Can it top 1 million subscribers and actually be highly successful? Very feasible. I plan on at least trying it out for a month or so.
