Does Final Fantasy XIV have a shot against World of Warcraft?

It's a wrap for WOW. The game got too hot too soon and now with TOR out and FF XIV who in their right mind will still be playing that game besides crack addicts?
Since the vast majority of WoW-players behave like addicts, pretty much all of them.

Seriously, hot too soon? It was introduced four and a half year ago and has 11.5 million users. Unless TOR and FF XIV are as slick when released as WoW is now and as addictive they won't touch WoW.

Some are relatively addicted, yes, but it isn't the addicts they need to take away from WoW to be successful. Even the raiders who don't participate in PvP but get very upset by the negative effects it has on their metagame may be willing to move to a new title. Maybe it will be to a Final Fantasy universe, maybe Star Wars, but that they'll have the option within months of each other can't be good for Blizzard.

No, because Final Fantasy sucks, but it sucks even harder as an MMO.

Those Final Fantasy fans, for the most part, want to play as the effeminate emo oddball with the massive sword. Though i'm sure a lot of them would settle for a cat-girl.

Go troll somewhere else please.

Anyways, I doubt 14 will topple the behemoth that is WoW, but I can see it as a possibly good MMO. It has a big enough target audience to make it survive as an MMO, and we have yet to see what potential it brings to the table. Can't really fully judge it until we know more about it but hopefully it will be a good contender to WoW. Although every time you compare an MMO to WoW it seems to always fall short funny enough. WoW is far too mainstream and big to be taken down so easily, I don't think any MMO with the Final Fantasy brand name would ever be popular enough to dethrone it.

Oh yes, trolling, the act of not agreeing... Oh wait. But to be fair I didn't put a lot of effort into my post because arguing with Final Fantasy fans is like slamming your head against a brick wall. In the end you accomplish nothing and your head hurts.

But fine, if you want me to put actual effort into it. World of Warcraft has a sturdy and massive fanbase and for a game to beat it, they would have to steal some of its members away. Final Fantasy and Warcraft fans hardly ever overlap and therefore it already has one mark against it. Final Fantasy already has one MMO, one MMO that their fans have put a lot of effort into. So they will be competiting with themselves, or they could close down the other Final Fantasy and alienate their fans.

*Choke* W..what? A FF MMO?! How do you go from a linear RPG to an MMORPG? I can understand Star Wars/Trek/Gate MMO's because of the giant universes, but a linear story driven RPG like Final Fantasy?

*Sigh* I hate WoW, but at least it has a proper setting.

Hrm, or if they are absolute geniuses they will offer some sort of data transfer ability or reward for players of 11 to make the transition far easier. Hell they could even supply a discount to those who have played 11 for a set amount of time.

NOTE TO ALL: Final Fantasy XIV IS A PS3 EXCLUSIVE.

It doesn't stand a chance to reach WoW-fame, reason... Look up.
No, its a PC and PS3 exclusive. Meaning the only platform it won't make it to is 360. It has a chance to do very well.
Does anyone click freaking links to facts? It's been stated from Squenix that they may indeed be bringing it to the 360 as well. They haven't decided yet. "WE are considering all other options" is what Squenix said.

http://kotaku.com/5277561/final-fantasy-xiv-360-version-still-a-distinct-possibility
"considering" doesn't mean it's been announced that its coming out on the 360. It means its been announced on the PS3 and PC. So I actually was stating facts. Whether or not it comes out on the 360 will probably depend on 2 things, 1. Sales of FFXIII on the 360, and 2 their ability to reach an agreement with microsoft when it comes to... "pricing" for using xboxlive. Since it's an MMO this is actually kind of a big deal, since the PS3 and PC are both technically free platforms for internet access there shouldn't be much red tape to develop for them. However, microsoft does funny things when it comes to their online support, in that they charge a rather large premium to use XBL support. Also, consumers need to subscribe to XBL to use their xboxes online. It's just another step to go through that they don't need to worry about with the PS3 and PC.

The problem is that the people who aren't addicted are still having great fun just playing the game. The people who want to go do something new will stop regardless of a new MMO. And blizzard doesn't care about those people, it will focus on keeping the rest in.

Seriously, it's not like there haven't been other MMO's released which could've posed a threat to WoW. Unless these new ones are exaclty like WoW and as polished, they will peform just like all the others.

Actually, the character designer that was responsible for the "Effeminate emo oddballs with massive swords" is no longer with Square Enix.

That, and Emo Oddballs never showed up untill FFVII-FFX-2. XII and onward and 1-VI seem pretty devoid of them.

But fine, if you want me to put actual effort into it. World of Warcraft has a sturdy and massive fanbase and for a game to beat it, they would have to steal some of its members away.

Incorrect.

First of all, MMOs do not need to beat WoW or even steal it's fanbase in order to be successful. All an MMO needs to do is to appeal to a fanbase that will keep it running. Final Fantasy after god knows how many games would definately have this Fanbase. It has no marks against if it doesn't take any WoW fans-This is a game appealing to fans of Final Fantasy, not to Warcraft. The minute it tries to steal fans away from WoW will be the moment it starts to fail.

As for two Different MMOs, It may or may not be an overlapping fanbase, or it may be a Zenn Diagram. Some playing exclusivly one game and others that play both. No need for Alienation nor do I expect it to happen. See Everquest and Everquest 2.

This was both good and bad news for me, because on one hand, there's another Final Fantasy game coming out. On the other hand, I just started playing Final Fantasy XI today... just my timing

I've heard quite the Horror stories about FFXI, so It's good that you're not quite so deep in yet :p

Then again, I was an Avid player of WoW which has more than it's fair share of Horror stories :p (past tense due to lack of time rather than interest. Parents will be the reason I run away I'm almost certain...)

You're right. But the thread's topic is a question asking if this can beat World of Warcraft. So it does matter when speaking on topic.

Well, frankly, the Topic question is hard to answer due to the way MMO markets work. If by "beat" it means get more subscribers, then it most certainly won't be getting more subscribers than WoW, and Unless something seriously goes Wrong with WoW, there won't be any other game on the market that will garner more subscribers.

Final Fantasy 14 will be an MMO?

Proof please?
It's called Final Fantasy XIV online in the trailer. It's an MMO.

Anyway, I do think it will challenge WoW for a short while, but I'm not sure if it will have a very lasting effect.
didnt they already try that with XI and it failed very miserably? FF MMO's arent meant to be, Bub.

It's still going strong, so I'd say it hasn't failed yet.
