Everything after the Soul Society arc in Bleach. Up to that point, it's a fun ride with cool fights and a plot that actually progresses. Once the "rescue Rukia" plotline is resolved, however, things start to go downhill. Every once in a while, a good fight happens, but you have to go through so much crap to get to them that it's not worth it.

Someone said Sword Art Online, I agree and disagree. The First story arc (that takes place in SAO itself) was pretty good, then it went off the rails badly. Lost all focus and since of urgency (and one of the few villains that can make a mass murderer sympathetic).
I'm literally about to see the last episode of SAO and I couldn't agree more. Without giving any spoilers away the second half kills almost everything that made SAO so unique and dramatic.

SAO is definitely worth a watch but it shoots itself in the foot sooo bad. If it had just been a long first arc then it would be in my top 10 anime, as it happens it ends up being a very mixed bag.

HOTD is dumb and you cant go in expecting much, its only for those who like zombies, boobs and cringe worthy teen relationships. Or people who like zombies and boobs, but are willing to put up with said cringey relationships.

MINOR SPOILERS BELOW:

I'm surprised that no one brought up the Hellsing anime (not Hellsing Ultimate, which is awesome). It's all the most bland parts of the original story, with a pointless shift in plot right about the time things are supposed to get interesting just so Alucard can fight some guy who shoots ribbony paint swatches out of his skin. Ends in 12 episode with no resolution, shitty pacing, and character development that goes NOWHERE because the payoff later in the story was put on the cutting room floor in favor of pointless paint swatch guy. Really stupid.

Instead, watch Hellsing Ultimate. Pacing is picked up to almost an abridged level speed, with much better story, characters, fights, animation, and gore.

I also see a lot of people mentioning Code Tranwreck, and I have to ask: What the hell is wrong with you people!? That is the single most enjoyable "so bad it's good" show ever made!
I know, right? If the series ever gets re-released on Blu-Ray (Come on, FUNimation! I know you can do it!!), I'm buying it, popping A LOT of popcorn, and letting the laughter commence...

Why do I now want to know if Rarity would agree or disagree on "not" recommending Paradise Kiss? *assuming the only anime she watches is fashion-related in some way*

OT: The third Tenchi Muyo OVA, mainly on the grounds of some of the English VA cast changing and the "anti-climatic" ending... (Only watch it if you REALLY want to see everything Tenchi-related..)

Also, the anime version of Witchblade... on the grounds of having bad fanservice... and a predictable ending...

(And, yes, I own the complete series of the anime Witchblade and would probably buy the third OVA of Tenchi just to own everything Tenchi-related...)

Gonna get hated for this but Full Metal Alchemist it is just sooo melodramatic. There's nothing lighthearted about it, so you eventually just get numb to the endless barrage of drama.

to the point where someone cut up their own daughter for an experiment and all it got out of me was just a "meh"
...And Brotherhood fixes those problem... by making the series longer and having more characters under the spell of "melodrama"... The only way that series makes it "better" than the original is its "extra" action sequences...
and a more happier ending/conclusion than in the original... especially if you discount the original's epilogue movie...

Well, most of the really awful stuff seems to have been said so I'll go for something a little more non-standard. In fact, I'll go with a Studio Ghibli film!

From Up On Poppy Hill.
I wouldn't say it's bad, or insulting or... well it's not anything really. It's just dull. Nearly every secondary plot point is completely predictable and boring and the main plot is built on a non-issue that's so convoluted and silly it's hard to take it seriously.

It doesn't even have the good manners to have the mysticism that other Ghibli films have, like Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle or Laputa. The visual and sound design are great as per usual for a Ghibli film but everything else is dull from start to finish and I only remember it for how boring it was,

I feel ya. I attended the very first MechaCon anime convention back in 05 where ADV studios (productions? I don't remember) had a giant wheel of fortune with 5 varieties of colored segments. Blue segments won you a DVD, while the single black segment won you a DVD box set. I hit the jackpot and, not knowing any anime by ADV, the fellow running the wheel offered me the Rah Xephon box set. After opening it later, I found it was a single Rah Xephon movie DVD with a huge-ass chuck of Styrofoam to fill up the rest of the box. As I'm sure you can imagine, I was pissed. Then I watched the movie, and I got really pissed. It sucked, and I was really hoping someone would bring it up in this thread. Thank you.

What? How can you not like my second favorite anime parody of my youth?! ...Eh, whatever... Besides the manga being more satifying, kind of, if you want a better parody series, there's always Excel Saga...

Excel Saga: Oh, god. I will never get those brain cells back. Hands-down the worst anime I have ever seen.
...On second thought, despite own the complete Excel Saga series on DVD, you're better off watching a parody series from Gainax...

Then again, most over-the-top anime parodies need a level of "don't think too much about it" to even find some enjoyment within them... (except SGT Frog... Just know that there's going to be A LOT of Gundam references, I guess...)

...I got to be honest... The only thing I like about that series, let alone REMEMBER from that series, was the opening and ending theme music...

OT: Actually, a lot of the anime series that have been mentioned in a more serious matter (compared to my list of "pretending" to not recommend anime series and/or movies) are ones I probably only watched for it's opening and/or ending theme song(s)...

I mean, I would mention Ergo Proxy in this thread, but the opening song and the show's choice of an ending theme (SPOILERS: It's a Radiohead song) makes want to joke about not recommending it to others that want a series that asked deeper questions than NGE and the like, yet decides to only answer most of them in the most ironic way possible EVEN BEFORE the final episode itself... (Then again, I'm not going to buy the complete series on DVD... So, there's that...)

Does RWBY count as a anime?

'Cause that's terrible and most of my other picks are up here. Namely Sword Art Online, Bleach, and Attack on Titan. With the first two actually having the reasons why I dislike it.

What to avoid in Anime; pretty much everything.

As with all things there are only a few gems and a lot of huge shapeless, worthless blocks of granite.

What you see now in American television is a lot of people trying to find something that will fill the gap left in their lives by the ending of Breaking Bad, these people are trying to find something that will capture their attention in the same way, something that will excite the senses, and the truth is that a lot of them will either end up settling for a much worse product or end up rewatching breaking bad several times just because they have nothing better to do or watch.

This is exactly the same with Anime, there are maybe 5-20 series maximum that are truly worth watching and the rest are things you watch because you watch anime, and what else would you do with your time? That's the truth.

Now, people, the anime in this thread are all indeed not the best shows the medium has to offer, in fact most of these are pretty bad (and for some reason people are posting actually good or decent anime). But there are anime out there that are so bad- I mean really, really bottom-of-the-barrel horrendously bad, you begin to wonder how many drugs the producers took to give the green light for production.

I've seen a ton of bad anime, but in my opinion if someone wanna watch them, so be it. I'm not one to tell people not to watch something.

However, some of the worst anime I've seen are:

Eiken [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eiken_(manga)]

The Rebirth of Buddha [http://myanimelist.net/anime/6985/Buddha_Saitan]

Apocalypse Zero [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse_Zero]

Penguindrum [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguindrum]

Nerawareta Gakuen [http://myanimelist.net/anime/14293/Nerawareta_Gakuen]

Those are the ones that really get on my nerves. The other bad stuff I've seen I usually enjoy for their shittiness. Such as:
Mars of Destruction
Garzey's Wing
Master of Martial Hearts
Skelter Helter
Panzer Dragoon
Sleeping with Hinako
School Days

You may not know this, but I love watching shitty anime.
Now these are examples of some all-encompassingly revolting anime. While Penguindrum is debatable (I didn't like it much either, but it had some merit) as is School Days (It had an incredibly satisfying ending) this is some shockingly horrible stuff. I'm highlighting Mars of Destruction and Apocalypse Zero for being abundantly detestable in particular.

To add another few:

Kenya Boy

Mad Bull 34

Angel Cop

Super Mario Bros.: Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach

Vampire Wars

Musashi Gundoh

All of the above are unquestionably atrocious.

Let's see. The top 5 worst animes I've seen. So bad its good series like Tenchi in Tokyo or some of the seasons of Sailor Moon don't count.

5. Burn-Up W - Some competence but an overall boring storyline, unmemorable action, and one dimensional characters. I haven't seen Burn-Up Excess so maybe that one is better.

4. Shattered Angels - I didn't beforehand think it was possible for a story to be both predictable and nonsensical but somehow this anime accomplished that. Really boring and the main character might be the most vapid character I have ever seen.

3. Dragonball Z - Got to get some controversy in my list. If steroid pumped guys shouting at each other in long drawn out action scenes where not much action happens is your cup of tea, then I'm pretty sure you have huge nostalgic goggles on for this series.

2. Tenchi Forever - Watching this is like watching paint dry. There is nothing that happens in the movie. This movie also has the gall to show us that something interesting is actually happening while not showing any of the interesting stuff on camera.

1. Queen's Blade - Well, how do you top infinitely boring? How about some rampant offensiveness mixed in with the boring. The action scenes are awful, the characters one dimensional, and the fanservice ultra-creepy.

Attack on Titan, the anime honestly had a great start but as time went on there was less and less action and more talk. The ending itself left the possibility that there would be a second season (I've read the manga and there should) but I feel like it'l end up just like HSOTD which had a great start and decent action but never got a second season and the anime aired back in 2010 and the OVA in 2011 which was a slight extension.

What I tend to look for in anme is a decent pace of action, character development and overall story, Animes Ghost in the Shell have a CSI theme going but still keeps up the pacing and action, Outlaw Star and Cowboy bebop back in their days along with Trigun could do the same, but something like Attack on Titan just dragged on for me and felt like a slog of episodes with nothing but a few terrified and surprised people and then eventually a titan would show up.
I was actually thinking I might be the only one who hated this anime. I really did not enjoy it after the first couple of episodes which was a really sad thing because it did have a great start, I agree. People can say what they like about SAO but at least something HAPPENED each episode, the plot got moved forward, a character got significantly developed, etc... But yeah, AoT was just such a massive disappointment because it seemed so good and then turned into ANOTHER mindless, pointless action anime.

Hmmm... interesting.

I've seen a ton of bad anime, but in my opinion if someone wanna watch them, so be it. I'm not one to tell people not to watch something.

However, some of the worst anime I've seen are:

Eiken [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eiken_(manga)]- I can't think of a single redeeming factor for this anime. It's tasteless, unfunny, unsexy, irredeemable, disgusting trash. Everything from the one dimensional characters, awful and inconsistent animation, generic and forgettable music, terrible voice work both Japanese and English, and lack of any sort of story or plot. I've seen hentai that had more class, plot, and better animation than this vile, unwatchable garbage. If you think HighSchool of the Dead was bad with its fanservice, you'll faint if you ever decide to watch this piece of shit. This is seriously the worst anime I've ever seen. I just can't squeeze any sort of enjoyment out of this, not even ironically.

The Rebirth of Buddha [http://myanimelist.net/anime/6985/Buddha_Saitan]- It's a Buddhist propaganda film, with so little effort put into it that it feels like it should have the budget of Mars of Destruction, and aired on a religious network, but instead it has a budget and screened in theaters with an all-star Japanese voice cast. The movie feels like a bad episode of Captain Planet, but with Buddha. There's a part with an alien invasion destroying a city Independence Day-style. I am not making this up. I feel like this movie was a waste of everyone's time and money.

Apocalypse Zero [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse_Zero]- This anime is basically a 90s Panty and Stocking minus all the fun. It's needlessly and uncomfortably violent, and I love my gory violence. It grows increasingly graphic and perverse, and it has a hideous art style. Like Eiken, it lacks any taste whatsoever, and it's not even enjoyable for how ridiculous it is. You just feel unpleasant and disgusted watching it. It's just not a fun watch, and it's not even like the anime is taking itself too seriously, because it's not. It has a fairly goofy Super Sentai theme going. It would be at least tolerable if the story was any good, but it's not. What sort of post apocalyptic society would have their high school above ground where grotesque monsters roam around the ruins, and even have them takes trips INSIDE these ruin cities with absolutely NO protection, where said monsters can easily rip their faces off? And the schools only protection against these powerful beasts are a handful of armed grunts? Why is the main leads brother looks and shaped like a woman, but they keep referring to her as a "him" and they never mention or establish if he's a transvestite or shemale or not?

Penguindrum [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguindrum]- I literally feel like the only person who actively hate this anime. Everyone I've heard from say it's a masterpiece, and while I'm not one to tell them they're wrong, it just irritates me increasingly every time I hear this thing get praised. Yes, this is seriously one of the worst anime I've sat through, just for the amount of anger it fueled in me. It was such an infuriating sit for me. The style was repetitive, and paced painfully slow, the characters lacked any believability, the dialogue was comprised of the most trite philosophical drivel you hear in almost every anime, coming out of the mouths of every character, including the children, a flashback every five seconds, and it's clear that the anime's main concern was not to tell a cohesive, believable story, but to shove as much symbolic schlock down your throat until you choke. It throws so much twists and new plot points that not even the anime could keep up with itself. Sure, there are some nice things I can say. It made me laugh a few times, and at first I found the character behaviors to be strangely charming, but as it went on it started taking itself way too seriously, and all those good feeling quickly "disappeared" like those fucking kids in that fucking child broiler. I tried watching Revolutionary Girl Utena afterwards, which is from the same creator, because I wanted something to like, but I didn't even like that "classic"

Nerawareta Gakuen [http://myanimelist.net/anime/14293/Nerawareta_Gakuen]- This was probably the angriest I've been watching an anime since Penguindrum. The movie looks pretty, but the story was... well, there wasn't any. Not even any of the synopsis I've read can tell you what the movie's about. It's just a sequence of horribly told events. When the movie isn't boring as hell, it's bafflingly bad. The main character's an idiot, and his love interest is overly abusive even for a tsundere. The other main character is probably the most interesting but even he's forgettable, and his love interest has nothing to do with anything in the movie. There's a student council in this movie make the student council in Kill la Kill look reasonable. The film also has this strange hatred for cellphones. This was just another infuriating sit.

Those are the ones that really get on my nerves. The other bad stuff I've seen I usually enjoy for their shittiness. Such as:
Mars of Destruction
Garzey's Wing
Master of Martial Hearts
Skelter Helter
Panzer Dragoon
Sleeping with Hinako
School Days

You may not know this, but I love watching shitty anime.
I've heard of most of these and those I didn't I was able to look up with ease, EXCEPT "Sleeping with Hinako". What exactly is it? Because from what I gather it's just a girl with big boobs that sleeps and you watch her or something... I'm confused.

OT: This Ugly Yet Beautiful World
I feel as if I was tricked into watching this one. I haven't watched it for years and year and years, so sorry if I get it a little wrong. however If I remember the description right. It was about a girl from space that is discovered by a teenager, they fall in love, but it turns out that they're natural enemies, and can love conquer all, yadda yadda yadda.

I thought it was going to be a nicely romantic anime with a philosophical tinge to it about whether or not the natural order is the natural order or if we can overcome the base instincts to destroy and fight.

Here is a short synopsis of the entire series: Tits, tits, tits, giant monster fight, tits, tits, another giant monster fight, more tits, even more tits, hot springs episode with lolicon tits, tits 2: the titening, oh look another monster fight but let's breeze past that for more jiggly-wiggly-wobbly-bouncy-bouncy titty tits, tits, tits, tits, TITS 3: THE TIT MAN COMETH!, final monster fight, unsatisfying non-ending ending, THE END

It is the most pretentious fan-service anime I have ever seen. And let's talk about fan-service a moment shall we? Why in the name of the 20 fucks is fan service still being made? We're not cavemen, we have the internet! I can see any kind of corker I want. giant knockers, flat chest, big tits, small tits, tits that climb on rocks! I can see it all! Why would anyone deal with a cock-tease!? Please, somebody explain this to me I really want to know! Also sorry for being a little aggressive in this post, I still haven't gotten over the time I wasted watching that piece of shit.

If you don't mind, I'm going to reverse your reversal and recommend some things mentioned in this thread.

Naruto and Bleach. One Piece didn't appeal to me, so I didn't watch past the first couple arcs, but it's in the same boat. These are good shows, good, surprisingly smart shows with a lot of thought put into them. Er, well, except for Bleach. Kubo never had any clue what he was doing with that mess. Also, they're delicious snack food. You can easily gobble down ten or more episodes in a day if you have the time. Lastly, watching one of these keeps you humble, and prevents you from becoming an asshole who tells people they're dumb for watching shounen.

Attack on Titan. AoT rolled over the anime fandom like a wave. Very much like a wave, in fact. You could think of anime fans as a rock in the middle of the ocean and the rest of the Internet as a beach: the wave rolled right over us without stopping and then broke on the beach in a big, beautiful rush. Attack on Titan is fresh and fun and exciting and gritty and flashy and awesome...and it went over the heads (or perhaps under the feet) of monocle-adjusting otaku.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. Flawed? Sure. After watching Evangelion 1.0 for a second time, I can say that Hideaki Anno is a piss-poor editor. "Huh?" you say. Yeah. That movies cuts were awful. Other than that, though, I don't know if there's any anime which can equal Eva's cathartic power. I'll be quiet now. You can stay and whine about how whiny Shinji is.

Lastly, Fate/stay night. Not because it's good, I haven't actually seen it and have no doubt it's quite bad. But there is no way, no way in any possible universe, that the anime could possibly be as bad as the visual novel on which it's based. The VN outclasses in terribleness everything else I am about to mention.

Fate/Zero is great, by the way.

Moving on to the suck!

Here's one people haven't mentioned: Wolf's Rain. Yeah, Studio Bones seems to have a gift for adapting manga (they were responsible for a show you might have heard of: it rhymes with Null Petal Malcolm-ist) but their in-house productions seem to pretty much universally be clusterfucks, and - in my opinion - Wolf's Rain is the most fucked of all of them. Believe it or not, I'm not going to complain about the recap episodes - in fact, I think those episodes improve the show. For those who don't know, there are four recap episodes in the latter third of the show; I believe there was an epidemic of some kind at the time, and so those episodes simply couldn't be made. No real harm done, though, because the last four episodes of the series simply went onto disk without ever being aired. Except those last four episodes turn a tolerable 22-episode show with an odd and vague but surprisingly satisfactory ending into a confusing, ridiculous, almost amusing 26-episode failure of a resolution.

Honorable Mention goes to RahXephon, which only escapes because it's by the same studio and has basically the same problems. It does, however, earn a silver medal in the category of Worst Opening Song.

Bruce said:
Elfen Lied. Its worst flaw isn't the nudity, the pointless cruelty, the violence or any of that.

It is that it is boring. It is one of the most boring pieces of crap I have ever watched, with stale, unrealistic characters, a plot trying to be so "adult" it raps itself right around to being juvenile again, and really nothing to redeem it.
Uh, what this guy said. I have nothing to add.

Another one nobody's mentioned: Eden of the East. I'm honestly not totally sure what's so bad about it. It's bland, but lots of things are bland. But when I was ranking the anime I'd seen a few months back, I could think of almost nothing I liked less than it.

Witchblade. Hoo, yeah, so my problems with this one are the same as my problems with most ecchi anime, Witchblade just sucks at it the most. It has two basic problems: 1) too much fanservice, and 2) not enough fanservice. Yeah, this seems to be a thing with a lot of ecchi: dividing their attention to between story and titillation. Which is stupid, because let's be honest here, there's only one reason you're watching this show. It's like watching a porno in which the pool guy arrives, fixes the pool, they chat for a while, have coffee, have dinner, and then in the evening go upstairs and have sex. Except without the sex. And less interesting.

C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control had a pretty great first episode. It's not as bad as anything above, but this is still a mediocre series with a cool premise but some infuriating idiosyncrasies. Like when the main character is in a battle and has all but lost after one attack, without his enemy expending any effort at all. Cut to after the battle, with the main character victorious with no real explanation. The worst part by far, though, is the ending. A plot-thing is about to occur which will erase Japan from existence. This is a known phenomenon which has happened in the past. The villain is attempting to save Japan. His plan, while it does require significant sacrifice, has no collateral damage. The main character opposes him. He has no alternative. In other words, if the main character succeeds, all 100 million+ people in Japan will die. The show has stated this. The main character succeeds. Japan is not destroyed, and in fact all the damage which has previously done is undone. HAPPY END.

Star Driver. If there is one show in this post you shouldn't see, it's this one. Do not watch Star Driver. I repeat, DO NOT WATCH STAR DRIVER. Star Driver is fun, exciting, and gorgeous, but it's also brilliant as hell and you won't get it. If you didn't like Revolutionary Girl Utena, don't watch this show. If you did like Utena, don't watch this show, because Star Driver is twice as good. Seriously, STAY AWAY from the genius that is Star Driver.

What? You just said I had to Not Recommend an anime. You didn't say it had to be bad.
