At this point, I would be legitimately more excited about a new Commander Keen game than yet another Doom reboot. Unless it goes full-on Dead Alive level grindhouse horror on us. Then I'm 100% down with a new Doom or whatever they call it.
Doom's story: There are hellish monsters in the next room, kill them. Repeat.Jaxs said:People seem to forget that Doom HAD a story. Do you guys know what it was? It's the exact story that this lady in the cut scene is telling.
Doom 2 is my favorite game of all time. But i'm still reserving judgement until I see some gameplay.
Yeah I can understand why they did it, but I would have liked it being a surprise. The only bit I liked in Doom 3 was right at the end when you walked through that gap in the wall which actually turned out to be between the Cyberdemon's legs. Scared the shit out of me.Doom972 said:And they already showed us the Cyberdemon instead of making it a surprise when you get to see it in-game. Too bad.
Still, I can't wait to see more of it.
Sure it can be. Take Diablo 3 for example. Adventure mode is popular precisely because the story is utter shit and people want the chance to enjoy the actual game without it getting in the way. Or GTA4, which had a great game hidden behind the "story" of constantly having to drive your cousin to the pub over and over and over again. Or look at virtually any decent platformer or racing game, where trying to force a story into it usually achieves nothing other than getting in the way of the gameplay. A good story properly fitted into a game won't usually make it worse, but a bad story or a badly implemented one absolutely can.hakkarin said:A game doesn't HAVE to have a story to be good, but it is never made worse by one.
It doesn't matter to me, as it's probably going to be terrible (as usual with games) and i'm probably going to skip every single cutscene and curse every unskipable Half-Life segment. I'd much rather have a level oriented and fast paced action game. If there is a story, keep it between the levels so it's easy to ignore. To me, that would improve 90% of all modern action games, the story is usually the thing dragging it down.hakkarin said:The original Dooms had plenty of scary horror levels.josemlopes said:It doesnt seem to try to be scary and thats nice since Doom was never supposed to be scary.
Anyways, I don't agree with the stuff a lot of people are saying that the game doesn't need any story and that story doesn't matter. It may have been true when JC said it when he made Doom, but guess what, that was OVER 20 YEARS AGO!
Gaming has evolved. "It's just a game", is no longer a valid excuse for a bad story. The expanded story in Doom 3 as basic as it was, was still a big step up from from the original Doom. I actually really enjoyed exploring the facility while discovering it's evil secrets.
So don't put me into the "story doesn't matter" camp.
They're having to reboot the reboot. Unfortunately Doom-3-Guy was shown a tac-light by a well meaning programmer and, well, there was an 'episode'.canadamus_prime said:Wasn't Doom 3 pretty much a reboot? So are they rebooting it again then?
Yeah I really don't understand the entire number system at all. Perhaps yahtzee is right and publishers and developers do it just to piss off future archivists. I mean really if you want to reboot DOOM and turn into anything other than a run and gun demon killing fest with heavy metal music in the back ground wouldn't it be a smart idea to not associate yourself that closely with the original game? I mean its not like Doom was a tiny hit that flew under the radar and this is a chance for the dev to reintroduce people. I mean are there really any people that are going to not buy the game if its called DOOM: Portal to Hell or more likely DOOM:Revelations. But just calling it Doom is going inevitably burn more people when it doesn't stick to the exact formula of its namesake.BeeGeenie said:That didn't look like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at all. I am disappoint.
Also, it should be "Doom 4," not "Doom." Stupid publishers don't know how to count. tsk tsk
I have no idea what you mean by that. "tac-light?" I don't understand. What "episode?"Grouchy Imp said:They're having to reboot the reboot. I know what "episode" means. I didn't know that any "unpleasant situation" *sarcastic air quotes* had occurred with Doom 3.Grouchy Imp said:Wow, you know you've been funny when you have to explain a joke. :/canadamus_prime said:I have no idea what you mean by that. 'Tac-light' or tactical light, the name given to the small flashlights attached to modern firearms.
'Episode' or a tactful reference to an unpleasant situation.
Referencing the Doom 3 game mechanic of being either able to wield a flashlight or a firearm, the implication being that when faced with the ability to do both Doom-3-guy completely flips out.
Guess I shouldn't give up my day job.
Look, I made a off-hand comment supposed to raise a smile, not raise some hackles. Sorry if you've been put out of joint.canadamus_prime said:I know what "episode" means. Also I've never heard that term for a flashlight before, ok?
For the record, I got it.Grouchy Imp said:Wow, you know you've been funny when you have to explain a joke. :/
