Alright, this has always been a problem on every forum, but seriously, WHAT IS UP WITH ALL THE DOUBLE POSTING? I normally don't think this would merit a seperate thread, but this has started to become an epidemic. Even some of the Escapist Forums' stars have started doing it. Folks, there's an edit button you can use if you want to change or add something.

I've seen some folks doing it because they have mulitple people to quote, but you can make multiple quotes in a single post. You don't need a seperate post for each one. Yes, if someone posts something you want to quote following your first response, by all means, make a new post! But otherwise, condense them into one post.

And for the folks who are solely double posting for the purpose of raising their post count (I'm not talking to anyone in particular, I just know there's folks doing it for that reason), I have to ask if it's really worth it. Post count doesn't really matter, as long as you can speak intelligently and not be an idiot, people will respect you regardless of how many posts you have.

Sorry about the rant, this is just somehting we have to nip in the bud before we end up with people making quadruple posts on a regular basis. Don't laugh, I've seen forums with this problem before.

you know, I don't know how to make posts with multiple quotes in it... so instead I just say fuck it and don't post at all...

Each post should be coherent and self-contained. If you're got two completely distinct lines of thought to pursue, I see no problem with splitting them into two sequential posts.

The real clutter comes from AOL syndrome ("Lol! Me too!") and over-quoting.

There is certainly a problem with double posting here, even with some of the older members.
Not being someone that double posts myself, i'm not exactly sure what motivates them to do it.
But I wish they would stop.

Editing in a quote is simple.

Quote, copy, edit, paste.

yeah, I usually don't notice I've done it until it's already done

I'd delete my double posts if I could, but I can't, so I say aww screw it

I do edit about 90% of my posts though

I have posted on a single page 5 times.

Because I was:

A) Talking to 5 different people
B) wanted to keep my answers coherent
C) It's easier.

I think the mods don't mind too much if you contribute something new/useful with every post.

"Double post" is poor terminology because it's being used by different people to refer to two completely separate things:

1. The same poster making two different posts to the same thread in sequence.

2. A technical fluke that causes the same post to be submitted twice.

The former shouldn't matter at all as long as your posts are actually constructive.

The latter is accidental, not conscious; at most, the double-poster should make sure your browser/proxy/connection aren't being stupid.

Quite simply because they could have edited their previous post to add in the parts that they missed out before. There's no need to bring your post to the front of the queue for your fix of recognition, you're already there.

It's agravating for several reasons. First and foremost, it's so blatantly easy to avoid it ticks people off when people decide to do so anyways.

Second, it screws up the flow of a conversation, and doesn't really give people the chance to respond to the first post before the second comes along. Think about it in real life: if you're talking to someone, and right when you think they're finished saying what thye want to say and you open your mouth to speak your mind, he starts up again. Annoying, right?

Thirdly, it's an assumed rule of forum posting ettiquete.

You can actually just hit the quote button again after you're finished typing your response to the first quote, and it will put the quote into the reply text box where the cursor is located.

It hurts because if I say something, I'll be playing into your trap, but if I don't, I'll be betraying the very values I started this thread on. ARGH... Well played, dimunitive non-threatening young feline, well played. And yes, it still counts as double posting if you did it to make a point.

The whole point of the message board interface is that threads are supposed to go back to the top when someone adds noteworthy new content to them. If you've got a whole new thing to say, it's only reasonable that the thread should float to the top when you post it.

The bouncing-thread problem you're describing is the result of short, unthoughtful, idea-free posting rather than "double posting" itself.

To make you feel worse I have seen someone quadruple posting

Ha, that's nothing. I once saw what had to be at least twice that.
