I'd say that, hell i make sure of it everytime I leave the house, do you know how annoying it is to find the giant field you took an hour to plant is all dead and the cash you used on it is now wasted? It's damn annoying.
Yes, but you must admit, to the non-gaming community it sounds like obsession.
Checking your email 10 times a day sounds like obssession to the "normal" world.

Yeah... I don't see a problem with Dr. Phil here. Farmville is a total waste of time. I get concerned when I see other healthcare workers at my job playing it on the computers instead of working with patients.

good job, farmville is bad, get the depraved freaks off it!
and DOESN'T advise one to watch his show, holy shit, x2 respect points combo!
Agreed,

We had a guest at our house once for a celebratory meal who kicked me off my computer so that she could tend her crops. I don't mind so much that she kicked me off the comp despite it being my home but the reason she did it made me wanna beat her to death with a 'strawberry milk' cows face.

(yeah, in FarmVille you apparently get cows that dispense different flavored milk and are colored accordingly)

That sucks, I at least have the common decency to only check for *vital* emails or news if i'm visiting.

But in all honesty I have very mild OCD (I *have* to have some things arranged a certain way, like my dvds, plates, cups, files) and farmville relieves me of that tension a little because I can be as OCD as I like about my need to click and create and upgrade things. Sure I dont go out to bars but in all honesty I dont drink and all my friends have moved across the freakin country, assholes.

WoW is *far* worse than farmville since it has the opportunity to spend excessive volumes of money on gold etc and subscriptions and most of all...it involves other people. Thats hell for a habitual user.

It depends on the type of patients. If it's alcoholics and junkies then I'd rather their care workers played farmville or solitaire or minesweeper. Generally ignoring them since they're better off going cold turkey. What irks me the most is that its illegal for health workers in the UK to pour alcoholics alcohol down the sink.

Oh god. FarmVille.

My Beautiful Fiancee got addicted to this when her sister told her about it. They managed to rope in half the damn family into playing it. Even now, as i type this, she is tending to her calves.

I wonder what it is that compels people to play FarmVille? To my Beautiful Fiancee, its (apparently) all about aesthetics, plus its a non-stressful game to play. Playing a game where she has a timer set to complete a task quickly tends to freak her out, but in this game there is a massive open window. PLus she likes to design the farm, planting little patterns into her crops. PLUS she likes finding new items, like mystery animals or new trees, and the thrill of acquiring them.

What a way to escape reality...but then, aren't we all guilty of that pleasure? Every time i load up Modern Warfare 2 to shoot someone in the brainhouse, aren't i guilty of escapism too? Albeit in a very violent fashion...and, seeing as i play almost every night, aren't i a little addicted too? When does enjoying something too much become addiction, or worse, obsession?

In Dr. Phil's case, it was a mother who was neglecting her family to play a game. We've all done this ("One more second, i'm killing the boss!!"), but when a mother isn't fulfilling her duties, because of a computer game, then she should step back and think about her actions.

We all should step back, and realize that escapism doesn't mean escape completely.

My feelings on Dr.Phil were stated by him, himself, in Scary Movie 4.
As much as I hate to admit watching that film.

Anyway, he's right, dumb game, dumb person, get your act together.

I hate Dr. Phil and his beady little eyes, gargantuan forehead and smug attitude.

If I ever visit the US I'm going to make it my mission to get a ticket to his show and leap on-stage with a can of wasp-killer (you know, the strong shit with p-Allethrin in it that is to wasps what Sarin gas is to a Tokyo subway), jam the nozzle in his mouth and press the plunger until his eyes go even blanker than they already are.

Or I might just write him a nasty email. I haven't decided which would be more fun yet.

It's the need to evolve your game to the next bigger and better level, to get that next crop that can gt you XP quicker and more money for a bigger farm.

Its very similar to the mentality of WoW level gains etc.

This advice works for any addiction, like Heroine or Meth.

I'm glad we can all see what are ridiculous and pretend addictions vs. what are actual addictions. It'd be a shame if someone actually suffering from a WoW addiction was ignored in favour of the person pretending to be addicted to FarmVille.

To sum up: If it's a silly addiction, make fun of it.

(Sarcasm above, as someone who volunteers/works with addicted people, it's not a topic to make fun of.)

Man FarmVille and all Facebook games are a blackhole for ppl`s time n they are not even that good.....but then again ppl who play those game simply will fail at any ordinary game.....but i do envy the creators for sucking in on the $$$ of their players.

BREAKING NEWS, EVERYONE! DOCTOR PHIL HAS ENTIRELY NORMAL, RUN-OF-THE-MILL SHOW THAT ALSO HAPPENS TO MENTION A VIDEO GAME!

This is some of the worst news I've ever seen on this site. I don't see a story here every time someone sees a counsellor because they feel like they're playing games so much that it interferes with the rest of their life; this is because it is not interesting.

It's one time when I agree with Phil, seriously my friends' moms are playing FarmVille all the time. Hell I was going to watch some videos on youtube one time and five hours later my friend's mom finally says "Ok guys you can have the computer for an hour, after that I need to check my crops again."

Hmm so Apparently Farmville is just as addicting as WoW. MAYBE it's just PEOPLE who can't handle things and not the game themselves. . .?

At any rate, the grounding, I believe the girl was grounded. Not the mom. IF I tell my son he can't eat dinner, I'm not gonna fucking starve cause I didnt do anything wrong.

I don't know what's worse; what Doc Phil said or the fact you guys are approving.
Seriously. If he would have attacked WoW or GTA4 the same way he did with Farmville and that woman, you guys would all yell on how he is evil and should die in a fire but but since you don't appreciate this game (that I don't play either) it's all good and fun and you give the man a pat on the back. Seriously. So people can attack gaming as long as the "hardcore" crowd isn't concerned. Fucking. Double-standard. Bullshit.

It's a game. Like it or not, it's still a game, people play it, and they are gamers too. A different public, but still gamers. And more importantly, it's not like he attacked that game for its own specific flaws like a movie critic attacks a bad movie, he attacked the medium. He said: ""There aren't really any crops," Dr. Phil informed her. "That's just a little image on a screen. They're not going to die.""

Replace "crops" with anything else and the man could basically be talking about any game as a waste of time, be it Halo, Modern Warfare 2, Bioshock, Mario Galaxy, Portal or even freaking Passage.

That woman obliviously had a problem but like I said, if she'd been a WoW player and Doc Phil had said:""There aren't really any Elves," Dr. Phil informed her. "That's just a little image on a screen. They're not going to die."", you guys would be filling this topic with hate and not RESPECT +10.

Next time a story like this comes up and it's about a game you care about, don't act all righteously offended, because you just proved that most of you care only about their favourite games and not "Gaming" as a medium in general. Sure, Farmville isn't the deepest game around but it brings fun, yes, the same fun you have playing any other games, to a bunch of people. It's incredibly hypocrite to judge "casual" gamers and then be all offended when they judge you back. Try to be the bigger man.

Does Farmville suck? Certainly, as a game it sucks. But Doc Phil isn't being a smart gaming critic with his own Escapist Magazine column. It's as if someone was attacking someone who watches too many bad movies but does so in a way to attack all movies in general.

EDIT: Adding to my Phil hate, read this one more time: "Cook a meal. Go on a date. Go to a movie. Go jog. Go sit out in the backyard and watch the grass grow. Do something. Actually, maybe start a garden for real."
Maybe I'm just reading too much into this but, is he reducing a woman' role in life to cooking, dating (aka have an husband) and gardening?
