The gun has little to do with it. If the gun hadn't of existed it would have been a knife. If the knife hadn't existed it would have been a fist.

Abusive people are abusive regardless of what weapons they wield.
Have you ever tried throwing a knife? Seriously, go and get a knife (anything from a fruit knife to a bread knife, it doesn't matter) now, and try to hit a coke can with the blade from a distance of more than ten foot. Now, get pissed and try it again. If it wasn't for the gun, that kid would be alive now.

All I got from that article is that video games have been blamed for poor parenting. And that this guy clearly has a great need for home defence.

Yeah, don't blame the alcohol, the company that made the alcohol or the store that sold it to him. Don't blame the gun, the company that made it, the store that sold the gun, the ammunition company etc. Don't blame the man himself Blame the video game because clearly all video games are the root for all evil and violence.
To think, if it weren't for video games Hitler wouldn't have become a genocidal monster, Alexander wouldn't have tried to conquer the known world, John Wilkes Booth wouldn't have killed Lincoln and hundreds of other horrific incidents in history wouldn't have happened. For shame video game industry, for shame.

Well spoken. Or, rather, typed.

What has the human race come to? If people see this is a reason to commit murder, somethings gone a bit wrong.
It has always been like this. Possible even worse, when you think about the witch burning during the Dark Ages.

Once again the news highlighting on the one thing in the story that's not the foundation of the problem but the easiest target to go after.

I have to agree with this, the controversy over video game violence is bound to draw in people to read the story.

Also I would note that the title is not factually misleading, since that is what happened. Sure just about anything they argued about would have lead to the same situation.

Also having read the article about it that is online, they make mention of it, but nowhere do I see blame attributed. Now if people assign blame to it, I can't really fault the publication very much in this case.

I think the keyphrase in that article was "Drinking heavily". I actually feel a little sorry for all those media bigots.

This thread reminded me of a little Discworld quote. "People want olds, not news." (Or something to that tune). People "know" that video games cause violence, and they'd be happier reading about this story with this headline, than the same story with a headline accusing the drink. But all this has been said already, so...

This is why we can't have nice things...

But really, video games have nothing to do with this murder. It seems that if video games were in any way involved or even laying around, they become the scapegoat these days.

Wait, so a missing videogame (replaceable by just about anything when drinks are involved) is responsible for murder when the murderer is DRUNK, has PREVIOUS CRIMINAL RECORDS, and owns both a GUN and AMMO?! Are we sure the media isn't retarded here? Why isn't drinking the focus of this, or better yet, gun control for those with previous criminal records (I don't support gun control normally because criminals are going to violate it no matter what whereas other people who just own the gun and aren't planning to go out and kill with it aren't doing anything wrong)? And going on further into this matter, anyone who decides 4:15 is the right time to have an argument already has problems. Also, looking back over the article again, this guy just gets worse. It took a 3hour standoff with SWAT before he let himself be arrested. Most normal people pull over when a regular police officer turns on their sirens behind them. I can't imagine resist 3 hours against a team of people in full armor who look like modern day ninjas all while obviously sleep deprived. Plus he tried to run away from the scene. This isn't exactly your model citizen, so where do videogames actually enter into this? Oh, the same way that a beer missing from the fridge enters into another drunken idoit shooting someone! You can't just say "Yep, I've seen this before as a rookie. That videogame was the source of all the violence that's taken place here. Well, let's go yank it off the shelves before this happens again in other abusive households." This was the work of a sick man that was years in the making. Not videogames, not guns (I bet he would have found some household object lying around and turned it into a weapon if there wasn't a gun), and probably only partly booze (yes he was drunk, but he was drunk at 4:15!). Media, get over this or I'll start a campaign saying that all the violence we hear on the news is causing violence.

What videogame was it? That's what I want to know. If it was my copy of Nintendo World Championships: Gold Edition, the murder could possibly be justified.
That's exactly what I was wondering too.

They could at least mention he was under the influence when he did it. Did they find the game afterwards? What game was it anyway? It seems like they are going to great lengths to keep that information a secret.
