I would have to agree with you on the stupid instrument part. Theoretically it shouldn't be too difficult to play but some of the percussionists I have run into seemed determined to prove otherwise.

I understand the 6 string bass can reach tones a guitar can't, but it's just silly to me. Why can't people be happy with a 4 string? I mean, I can understand a 5 string in some cases, but the 6 string just seems like over kill to me.

Have you ever heard a good Bass Player play a solo? My dad is the best bass player I've ever heard and had a 6 string for a bit (he sold it once he went though money trouble) and it was the best thing I've ever seen. Go on youtube and find a 6 string bass solo.

The piano is a string instrument with keys, I mean who thought of that, it's a massive instrument, it weighs a ton, and it's expensive. How does one began to invent an instrument like that? It's just plain stupid.

Also, to the OP, the piano isn't a string instrument, it's technically a percussion instrument.

Pianos are definitely strings, despite the fact that they're hammered.

Yes, it has strings, but it's classified as a tuned percussion instrument, just like the vibraphone or glockenspiel. A minor semantic point, but relevant nonetheless. It's like saxophones being woodwind despite being made of brass; counterintuitive but classified on action rather than construction.
