Our ever-eager Dungeon Master is first to the lever once again:

It looks as if the merchants did drown after all, eventually. They just wanted one last underwater fight to the death with a herd of oxen first.

Sploosh!

Urgh. I quickly grow tired of goblin bullshit.

I tried sending some soldiers after it, but it fled. Beh.

...WHAT!? Green-skinned lube-quaffing quasi-natural bags of goblin innards dancing atop MY TOMB!? Where's the napalm!? Get up that fucking hill and bring me back their faces NOW!

2nd Opal: Mid-Winter

There is nothing to catch in the NorthWestern swamps, apparently.

Those tomb-dancing goblin bastards got away, but the outer defences are coming along nicely and I'm beginning to consider catapults.

As planned, the Northernmost lever in this picture now controls both the secondary drawbridge and the two floorgrates that allow access to and from the doorway entrance North of it:

So, pulling the lever now completely cuts off access to the outside world (again). I forget exactly why I bothered creating the doorway entrance, but it should allow for greater control over the battlefield during an attack; sieges will be made far more difficult for enemies having to cover two routes, taking crossbow fire from fortifications at every angle and risking enclosure between moats with every charge.

Gah! Closing off the fortress for even a mere second bamboozles my airheaded associates literally to death! Someone just decided they'd pop on down to the freak-infested river of mutant supercarp for a drink, only to be struck down by Clamplayed, the Mighty Sturgeon!

I shall personally ensure that the cause of death is carved into the fool's gravestone in dazzling quartz.

Seems that our favourite stoneworker has finally done himself in:

I assume he swallowed one too many of his own marbles. All's well that ends well, I say.

Yet another death: the esteemed cheesemaker Deduk Sazirmeb has somehow fallen into the moat.

Sometimes I have no idea what to do with people.

9th Obsidian: Late Winter

Another bloody mood, and one of the children just organised a party.

I do hope these listless drifting clouds of languour get something done by the end of the year; I think the cold is starting to get to me.

1st Granite 105: Early Spring

Well, that was a surprisingly uneventful season; I had expected more of a goblin presence, possibly even a full-scale siege.

As you can see, my defences are basically complete, and after a minor effort by the labourers they shall be in place. Most notable are the abundance of fortifications through which marksdwarves may fire at enemies, the pair of catapults set up by the far bridge and the system of interconnected moats. Hopefully, this should be a failsafe defence for all dwarves who are lucky enough to be caught inside the fort in case of a siege.

The barracks can house an army of 40, but can train no more than four marksdwarves at any time, which is one area wherein it could use improvement. The noble quarters to the West of the above scene are barren, but again, basically ready for application. Also, the merchant deathtrap is ready to consume its next set of travelling victims, kehehehehee!

Here I shall reiterate the functions of our levers:

The Northernmost lever controls the floodgate for bottling up the cistern on the above level, while the lever opposite controls the hatch that prevents its water from pouring down into the trade depot.

Inside the main corridor we have another two levers; the Northernmost controls the Eastern bridge as well as the Eastern grates that bridge the various Eastern moats. Effectively, pulling this lever cuts off all access from the East. The lever to its South raises or lowers the main drawbridge, which lies just outside the main gate.

The food and drink situation is not as stable as it was earlier this year, and could probably use another boost, particularly in the area of alcohol. Also, with but a single marksdwarf in our military ranks, the fifteen thousand fortifications I've had built will be of little use to us, and so I might advise an increase in the number of crossbow specialists.

Our stockpiles are generally well-filled:

Our current mentally disturbed trinket-licking savant is in the Jeweller's workshop, where I have had a door built just in case he needs to be stored away permanently.

Unbelievably, we still appear to have plenty of coffins available.

On the level below this I found a few scattered metalsmiths' forges. I believe these ran out of metal to use a while ago, but since the human merchants finally passed away we might be able to make use of them again.

Well, I have had quite enough of being an undead bedridden cripple. I had hoped my time as a zombie would have been more adventurous and swashbuckling, but ironically it turned out to be much the same as lying in a coffin, bored out of my skull, drifting into the occasional coma... perhaps this time I will stay dead, but I wonder, who can say? Dead or alive, my mind changes like the wind.

One thing I feel more certain about is that those goblins are becoming restless. Stay on your toes, or preferably, adopt a combat-ready stance, seize your axe in either grasp and gouge hysterically away at the future as only one of dwarven blood is able!

I swear, its only a little flood. Not Biblical flooding.

Doesn't look like I can post images. I thought I'd put the screenshots in a word file and send them to someone along with the write-up.

Why can't you post images? Is there a technical limitation or do you not know how? I'm pretty sure this site lets any registered person post pictures using regular URLs, you just need to use the right BBcode.

Edit: I have an idea: try quoting my friendly black face from above.

Here's my save file, following the rule of the great and wise Artful Dodger, who ruled over the The Bloody Great Waste of Time during Spring 105 to Winter 106. Though the times were troubling, with many goblin attacks, titan incursions, and massive flooding; his people remember his time fondly.

((I'll have the write-up and screenshots on 4/3/2009 or 4/4/2009, but I thought I'd post the save file now so folks can get started)).

P.S. My apologies Omnidun, but you were slain by goblin arrows. Your body was successfully retrieved and placed in your tomb, where your followers made offerings of clothing.

P.P.S. Never send a cripple to pull a critical switch...
