1st Granite 105: Early Spring
Well, that was a surprisingly uneventful season; I had expected more of a goblin presence, possibly even a full-scale siege.
As you can see, my defences are basically complete, and after a minor effort by the labourers they shall be in place. Most notable are the abundance of fortifications through which marksdwarves may fire at enemies, the pair of catapults set up by the far bridge and the system of interconnected moats. Hopefully, this should be a failsafe defence for all dwarves who are lucky enough to be caught inside the fort in case of a siege.
The barracks can house an army of 40, but can train no more than four marksdwarves at any time, which is one area wherein it could use improvement. The noble quarters to the West of the above scene are barren, but again, basically ready for application. Also, the merchant deathtrap is ready to consume its next set of travelling victims, kehehehehee!
Here I shall reiterate the functions of our levers:
The Northernmost lever controls the floodgate for bottling up the cistern on the above level, while the lever opposite controls the hatch that prevents its water from pouring down into the trade depot.
Inside the main corridor we have another two levers; the Northernmost controls the Eastern bridge as well as the Eastern grates that bridge the various Eastern moats. Effectively, pulling this lever cuts off all access from the East. The lever to its South raises or lowers the main drawbridge, which lies just outside the main gate.
The food and drink situation is not as stable as it was earlier this year, and could probably use another boost, particularly in the area of alcohol. Also, with but a single marksdwarf in our military ranks, the fifteen thousand fortifications I've had built will be of little use to us, and so I might advise an increase in the number of crossbow specialists.
Our stockpiles are generally well-filled:
Our current mentally disturbed trinket-licking savant is in the Jeweller's workshop, where I have had a door built just in case he needs to be stored away permanently.
Unbelievably, we still appear to have plenty of coffins available.
On the level below this I found a few scattered metalsmiths' forges. I believe these ran out of metal to use a while ago, but since the human merchants finally passed away we might be able to make use of them again.
Well, I have had quite enough of being an undead bedridden cripple. I had hoped my time as a zombie would have been more adventurous and swashbuckling, but ironically it turned out to be much the same as lying in a coffin, bored out of my skull, drifting into the occasional coma... perhaps this time I will stay dead, but I wonder, who can say? Dead or alive, my mind changes like the wind.
One thing I feel more certain about is that those goblins are becoming restless. Stay on your toes, or preferably, adopt a combat-ready stance, seize your axe in either grasp and gouge hysterically away at the future as only one of dwarven blood is able!
