Worse than Bank of America? Not a chance. But as far as video game companies, they have their own classification. This is a company that is against consumer rights and are anti-competition because they historically monopolize anything (EA is highly covetous of licenses, especially franchises) that they can so that people have to suck it up and go through them and their shitty practices.
That said, the angry masses who did vote EA as the worst company in America better fucking own up and boycott the next Medal of Battlfield or whatever the hell EA is working on next to compete with the endless trail of Call of Duties. Or at the very least buy used in spite of them.
The public response is a pretty good summation of EA's attitude of "we still sell tons of games because nobody treats the [EA] logo as a warning label more serious than the ESRB rating."
I was just reading today how cable tv companies have been losing droves of customers, and I'd bet a lot of it comes down to cheaper online alternatives (competition!). All the inter-votes in the world won't convince a company that they're assholes until it hits their bottom line. So if anyone finds EA's practices egregious and offensive, STOP BUYING EA GAMES! Seriously, they ended this Mass Effect thing so go play some of your old games and suck up not playing the occasional game or two and read a book or watch a movie instead of supporting the company that pissed in your coffee before. If you can't do that, then I guess they aren't the worst company in America, to you (whoever this applies to), I suppose.
*but try and convince the sports game fans that EA has mesmerized into buying yearly reiterations at $60 a pop, which is why anyone who really doesn't like a company like EA should do without (compensation for the die-hards) if they were this offended.
