I live in Massachusetts and it was a bit of a surprise. But my three brothers up in Alaska are probably laughing at us down here on the East Coast.

But what I'm really concerned about is hurricane Irene.

Overreacting much? 5.9 is nothing guys . I know you have no earthquakes in that zone but this is so silly . People scared , telling other people where they were when it happened like it was some kind of a disaster . Only way someone could have died would have been from a panic attack or something .
We're hardly panicking or anything. It's just that we almost NEVER have earthquakes here, and because of this we really aren't "setup" for them. I know my friend's wall-mounted TV fell, and that kinda sucks. Really, we aren't treating this as anything other than what it is, something kinda weird, and also kinda interesting. I'm just curious how far it was felt, to be honest.

Here in Delaware, didn't feel much. The house shook a little bit, but I was in the basement and only heard the rattling of everything upstairs.
Woo! I am also in Delaware. I felt it, but initially thought I was just getting dizzy and light-headed, and was about to pass out.

Wasn't until I turned around in my chair and saw a single box moving that I realized the earth was moving.

Yeah... Those aren't supposed to happen over here. Just startling is all it was, but I've never had one in my life.

5.9 is like when you burned toast: it ruined your morning, but it won't matter by lunch.
There are fault lines in the area they're saying it came from, but it's nothing in comparison to other fault lines.

Now watch as scientists start freaking out about how this has more to do with the San Andreas faultline and how California is about to break off.

Guess I shouldn't complain though, I'm in Florida, which is on schedule to get smacked by a hurricane.

Got it here in southeast VA pretty good. Had no clue what was going on at first. Everything seems to be fine, though.

Some reports are saying it was felt in Toronto, Canada.

I felt it. Surreal is all I can say. Isn't the Escapist based in VA?
Maybe that's why the Escpaist has been acting up for me today with loading problems but that could just be me.

I hope everyone's alright where that earthquake though, god this year has had me freaking out alot and I generally try to take everything in stride. I can't wait for this year to end before I end up going to the nuthouse from worrying about stuff...

So that's what that was. Earthquakes in the North East are very rarely felt, so I was confused at first. All it did was rock my desk a bit.

My fart registers higher than a 5.9
This is all Bush's fault (somehow).
I live in California so I didn't feel it. Earthquakes over here aren't that rare so for us I guess it would have felt like any other earthquake. Don't really know what it is like for you guys.

So who felt that??? I was in a lab and luckily nothing fell over and turned me into a super hero but anyone know what's going on under the crust?
I was playing FIFA with a friend and the chandelier went into a spasm. I actually felt that the folks in the apartment above me were having a fight or plumbing issues.

I feel stupid now :/ if something had crashed, I woulda been totally unprepared.

Nothing here in Rhode Island. Although watch a massive tsunami just engulf the entire area five minutes after I type this.

Raeligh is close to VA as you can get. Too bad I live in Northern VA and I'd have to drive 4 hours south to meet those guys.

I just saw the news " New York evacuated , Pentagon evacuated " I get these are safety procedures but they seem silly at 5.9 from where I come from . No building worth its money falls at that magnitude . The safety alarms should really trigger from 6.5+(the richter scale is exponential I believe , so it jumps very fast from one value to another ) .

Just so you know from a guy that experienced a 8 , the WORST thing you can do during an earthquake is panic . Be as calm as possible and try to find a way out of the house if it's fast or find a safe spot if you are in a tall building . All well to you guys and hope you never need to live a big one .

I felt the quake, was on a minecraft server at the time, at first i thought it was a helicopter hover close to the house, but the house was swaying rather than vibrating so it was kinda neat, nothing even fell off the shelves.
